I think the backstory was that Bajie was a deity once, but he was still as brash and single-minded horny man as he is now. So at first he was infatuated with the Moon goddess, but that was just a brief crush. He then found true love with a handmaiden goddess. Then after he bumped into the moon goddess having a tryst with another high ranking deity, they silenced him by casting him down from deityhood. Even after rebirth as a human, he was still a horny guy, and he pursued after any beautiful maiden he saw. After a few more rebirths, the Buddhas and other deities arranged to reincarnate him as a pig yaoguai so that he could join the destined Journey to the West. At this point, the handmaiden goddess had also forfeited her goddess status to find him, but she mistakenly was reborn as a spider yaoguai instead, because pig and spider sound the same in Chinese. After they met during the Journey, they had sex and had a daughter. But the problem now was that by joining the Journey to the West, Bajie was doomed to repeat the cycle throughout eternity. So he was afraid to acknowledge his lover and their daughter because he was afraid if he did so, they would be so involved that they would become permanently bound to the cycle of Journey to the West. This is like the wheel of time, the world repeats every cycle. Small details can change, but the bigger events are inevitable. Wukong and Bajie are both inevitable souls that will always be reborn for this purpose of the Journey to the West. In every cycle, Wukong willingly dies to transit himself into the Destined One, who then merges into the rock in Chapter 6 and forgets everything, yet the Headband that represents his slavery to the cycle remains (bad ending). Wukong does this because he knows it is his only chance to free (good ending) himself of eternal slavery. Whereas Bajie doesn't have this mechanism, possibly because he is not as powerful, so the buddhas and the deities do not need to resort to wiping his memory to keep him under control. But he wants to keep his lover and daughter out, so that they can remain as small details, so that even if they die, they can be reborn as other living things instead of doomed to repeat their role in the Journey.
