One of the greatest games ever made if treyarch didn’t choke. If they didn’t scrap so much of what they had made to rush a cod game to market the campaign, multiplayer, and zombies would have been the best made still until this day

Black Ops 3 is an exceptional dystopian horror game that warns about the technologies of today getting out of control in the future and destroying our lives and world if we rely upon it too much. The sense of complete discomfort and dread as you constantly only destroy and hurt those who were acting out of self defense leading to the entire game breaking and glitching out after Lotus Towers was great and Life being a bonus 4th wall break mission was very cool and creative. The foreshadowing of the trolley problem leading to the AI Art forest ending was a favorite of mine. Which is what Train go Boom meant. Call of Duty finally made a game that expects you to use your eyes and ears for once and basically took the series to its complete logical and artistic conclusion. Some might think it's pretentious, or confusing, but they clearly didn't listen or care enough to finish it. It was a game that dealt with very real issues that we let get to now as BO3 warned, and admittedly had more faith in its players than was realistic for little Timmy.

Fantastic video! I am a die-hard fan of BO3's story, and it is heartwarming to see the discussion it deserves apart from just simple "failed to impress". Despite all of the shortcomings and unfortunate story structure, I think this is clearly a phenomenal adventure that deserves more attention. Would love a proper novelization too, if being honest.

Such an incredible retrospective. While I was waiting for this video to come out, I went and watched someone else’s campaign analysis and it was not nearly as structured and linear as yours. There were a few times in this video that you cleared up some of my confusion, I had from the other bo3 video. I must say I think you have a great knack for explaining a story in a manner that is easily digestible for the general audience. I didn’t have to rewind and listen again to comprehend your statements, you effectively cut out a lot of mumbo-jumbo, kept the analysis linear (not jumping from timeline to timeline) and didn’t over complicate the explanations, all of which you should do when analyzing a story as complicated and fragmented as BO3. That pacing you have leads to your videos being easy and comfortable to watch and listen to. The first video I saw from you was your BO1 retrospective, and I was very surprised and impressed when I saw that you have under 10k subs! Great job, I’m looking forward to watching your next video brother. You’re doing great work.

the best campaign in my opinion. Honestly, I understand that the players were confused in the last mission but it's understandable since that. Put Tellmeall in the data vault keyboard to unlock the index in the codex. At the bottom you will find taylor audios that explains the fast scrolling text. It's a resume but that it's because the intro texts also include what you are playing. After experiencing this campaign gameplay, it's hard for me to enjoy games like cold war where it's more "generic". The data vault explains a lot of things, even the name of the four characters of the campaign. C. Mason is one of them, maybe a descendent of David. A fun thing that I think people overlook is that in the safehouse after the conversations between characters, if you wait you will start listening to the world news regarding the mission you did. I just think this story had the focus in making people ask questions and to discover the answers as it was a zombies ee. Heck, no doubt why Jason Blundell was the director of this campaign. Every time you experience something odd, its not because it's bad written, it's because maybe the game fucking tells you to focus on that if you want to understand things. The first mission sets a lot of questions (what happened between Taylor and Hendricks, what happened between kane and taylor, why is Khalil a prisoner and what happened in the Cairo Uprising). All of this is explained during Lotus Towers as well as the scene of the scarf that happens at the end of the second mission. The second mission will reuse quotes from every member that we will be killing. Ramirez and Taylor will say quotes from this mission during their bossfights. The second missions also foreshadows how every member of Taylor's team will die during the campaign. Diaz tell us not to control so many robots or we will die (that happens to him in the fifth mission), Hall told us that interfacing with the dni can kill the subject (that happens to her), Maretti remembered us that even with our new features, a bullet in the head or our chest will kill us for sure (he is impaled later) and Taylor said to us that sometimes we have to sacrifice ourselves (he sacrifices himself when he removes his DNI). In Demon within and Sand Castle, Hall and Kane will say "Taylor" refering to us, but the game sells you that it's not you because of the plot. I know this because in both situations, the player responds that he will find Taylor so it can't be a coincidence. Also in the first mission, in the hospital at the end of the second mission and in the flashes of the player dying, we will see a crow on each cutscene foreshadowing all of the frozen forest plot. In Rise and Fall, our player says to Khalil that is good to see him after so much time. Khalil doesn't respond because he didn't know him 'cause the first mission was after these events. Also it's interesting that everytime the game changes location, someone will say to us the quote "you still with us?" This quote it's similar to "we have a job to do"· of Adler and keeps the player in the simulation. This quote will appear in the second mission, rise and fall, and in the frozen forest when taylor will say this to us after corvus kill krueguer in the last mission. In the safehouse during the third mission, our player drifts and ask Hendricks where are we. I consider this as a variant of this quote. Funny thing is that something similar happens with Taylor. In lotus towers, Hendricks will ask him if he still in there. This is important because in the last mission Kane will tell us that if we still in there meaning that we are playing as Taylor but controlled by the player. Here in this mission happens something similar like Reznov in bo1. The player have to kill Hendricks because he thinks Hendricks is infected when the reality of the story it's that Hendricks after seeing that a Coalescensce project killed again more of his teammates (Dylan and the others were killed to bury the secrets of project Corvus), decide to finish the job that Stone started. Taylor appears in the frozen forest because in Taylor DNI where coexisting both he and the player. Also the fake gun sound in the "harakiri" scene tell you that that shot wasn't real. After purging his DNI, Taylor comforts the player using the frozen forest quote. By the time Taylor exits the building he gains control over his body as the consciousness of the player disappear. Now the player is death both physically and mentally. A bit long but hope people understand now all the hints bo3 gave us. Also remember Taylor quotes in Lotus tower about being a puppet, that explain that they weren't in that role and saying that he is a puppet of the player. Maybe I forgot something but these things are overlooked by all the players. PD: If you order the mission protocols in cronological order you get: we are Taylor. Now, also in the intro details, the first two missions have a day and a year specified. The others don't. Just the days the manhunt of Dylan Stone lasted. However the last mission says day unknown. This is because you are not in a simulation anymore. So, the first mission is set in the real world, the second in a simulation but with the player aware of that, and then from third to tenth is a simulation with the player unaware. The last mission is partially in the real world (zurich part) and in a simulation (the frozen forest). The missions from third to tenth may see not relevant because it was a dream and whatever. The thing is those those events happened in 2064 so they are real even if we are in a simulation. Those things happened in the black ops timeline. The game was not about the third cold war, it was about bury the CIA secrets while killing our old partners and friends. That's why Hendricks was always angry. He wasn't fine with the mission so the stress made him like that. The game make us believe that he is angry because he is infected but in reality it's because of that. About the other black ops connection. In the data vault they developed more of the things Khalil told us in Rise and Fall. It was becaue of the 2025 strikes in Los Angeles that the world created the DEAD systems and try to create the DNI to prevent those types of attacks. After the cyber attack on the Chinese stock, a world crisis make the EU to disolve making some countries to make a deal with the russians. This will be called the CDP. America afraid of the control the russians could have in Europe the created the Winslow Accord. So now the world is set like the first Cold War. The world was divided between WA (OTAN) and CDP (Warsaw Pact). So, the bo3 character are a generation that had to live in a world convoluted because of bo2 events. On the other side and speaking about black ops 1 connections, in the data vault you find that Krueguer discovered Mason and Hudson mails of the bo1 terminal. He discovered about mkultra and nova 6 as well as other character like David Mason, Reznov, Petrenko and Nevski. So, he decided to contact the CIA to see if he can use the nova 6 they had locked since bo1 events. The CIA was good with this idea and this is the origins of Corvus Project. In the last mission fast scrolling text that seem glitched, you can discover that the numbers that seem random are in fact bo1 broadcasting numbers. Then if you use the first letter of the words like Delta-Romeo-Alfa etc, you will uncover the next message: Dragovich, Kravchenko, Steiner, these man must die. This is because the Corvus Project was based on the mkultra and nova 6 from bo1. To sum up, bo1 events were the base of Corvus and then bo2 events are the cause of the world bad situation. The data vault has more interesting things related to the factions and events the game just tell you but not develope so much because it was meant to be read here. Also they reference so many missions (specially bo2) as well as shadow references that you only understand if you played the last two games. Like when you read about Menendez, you read that he had CIA links (Hudson) and Commanders of Special Forces of USA (Salazar). So people that say this game was not connected so much with the other two didn't use the data vault About the comic prequels, they used it as a hint in the cutscene that tells you that 5 years have passed since the palyer and hendricks started to work together. During those 5 years, the comics events happens. The target of the fifth comic was Ivan Rudel. This is the name you saw of the dead body in that cutscene. If you are worried about the comics, in the data vault there is a page called team phi that gives you biography details about Stone and the others as well of a summary of their operations. So you can read these and skip the comics because they aren't that much relevant in the game. Diaz didn't want to fight Hendricks and the player because they were friends. You can see the sadness of his voice when you are going to fight him. So little details that were cool. By the way, the first time you hear the frozen forest dialogue is in the third mission when you enter the black station. That's what Hendricks say to Kane to turn off

That conversation between You & Rachel in Sand Castle is actually *REALITY* bleeding into *Taylor’s Memory Simulation* that we’re experiencing…while watching this video it occurred to me that this could apply to the end of Lotus Towers as well! *It’s actually Taylor after having told Rachel about his plan to purge his DNI, she’s so fearful because the purge will cause him to FORGET ABOUT HER.* I like your interpretation at the end but I believe the instant black screen after we say “Taylor” as the purge reaches 100% is actually the end of our consciousness & Taylor lives on as the sole survivor, forgetting the whole thing ever happened. Us/Him telling the soldier his name is to make sure at the very least; he’ll know his own name after the purge.

To your point about Winslow Accord and other factions not feeling fleshed out: you can read more details about various factions, robot enemies, and weapons in the directory at the CIA safehouse. That was another mistake the devs made by not including some of this information in the story. But I guess the writers were trying to balance how much exposition they wanted in the story to not bore the player; so they put most of the backstory material in the text logs for people to seek out if they wanted. I get why most people like classic "boots on the ground" Call of Duty, but I wish we could get more science fiction CoD. I really liked the world building of BO2/3, Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, and Infinite Warfare; and at least a few of these deserve sequels. Sci fi settings allow for more creative freedom than a historical setting. How many times do you really need to see WW2? Just go back and play the classic CoDs.
@calvinfishermedia

Yeah, that is definitely fair about that info being in the codex! I would personally love to see sequels to the futuristic cods as well, or brand new futuristic settings. Ooooh! Dude, thank you for including the BO3 menu music at the beginning because my god that brought me back.🙏 So yeah, regarding the story, I think you now see where I was coming from when we discussed this a while back about how it is very convoluted but also goes into a very supernatural like place that also makes it more confusing. It’s basically a typical sci-fi AI story of the AI taking over but again it tries to do a little bit too much with it. I think if they had honed in on the aspects of what makes it so scary knowing that your body is basically turning into a robot that can be taken over and you lose yourself because of that, it would’ve been better. The supernatural dream sequence stuff just brings it down.

Oh that is a fascinating interpretation. Gave me goosebumps. You mimicked my first impressions exactly. My solution was to pretend the player was a rogue AI thinking they were human until the ending, it was part of a story Idea I had combining Black Ops 3, Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare into one massive campaign. Call of Duty as a series definitely has it's faults in coherent story telling, but I like to use that to my advantage by taking the surface level they provide and inserting my own connections to form the base. The CoD Wiki interpretation is interesting, but IMO takes too many leaps in logic. I like yours! Although I will be pedantic and point out that neither Taylor nor anyone in Dylan Stone's team had a DNI when they went to the Singapore Coalescence building. Taylor gets DNI surgery after his confrontation with Stone at Lotus Towers - this surgery is the thing that Kane is urging you/Taylor not to do in the cutscene right after that mission. That doesn't mean that Corvus isn't "real," but it didn't come straight out of the original DNI experiment. I have my own theories that are way too extensive to detail here lol.

You're two augmented soldiers and you have this tiny female lying on the floor, maybe lift her body off the floor so you can place her hand on the thingy while it's still attached to the rest of her? Unless there's some detail I've always missed because I struggle to believe it can really be that stupid.

I think it’s because they need a hand print from both the inside and outside scanners simultaneously. The system expects both Goh twins to be present. I don’t think Goh is long enough to hit both scanners at the same time, so they cut her hand off to scan both. That is my interpretation though!

You’re telling me they couldn’t just break that window and put her hands on both scanners if their system would work if they cut off her hand? I thought they needed both twins? If they were going to cut her hand, then it also made no sense to not kill her too. Plot holes like that held this game back and really detracts from the story. Corvus being an emotionally draining distraction that drains people of their energy is exactly what ai is today. I think Corvus was a warning.

I always appreciate it when someone sees something great in pieces of entertainment that I didn’t like. I do think bo3 was easily the worst cod campaign when it first released but we’ve had worse since then *cough cough* vanguard and mw3 2023. I think bo3 has fun core gameplay, very interesting concepts and I like how ballsy they were to do something so bizarre. Unfortunately, as a game that’s supposed to be a sequel to world at war, bo1 and bo2 it has absolutely no connections to the previous games in its story and just isn’t a proper sequel in any way except for a very brief mention of Menendez and nova 6 briefly showing up for some reason. I was a massive fan of treyarch cod campaigns at the time and bo3 was very disappointing. Lol, fair enough! I meant more as in the setting and mood rather than the actual story and how it is told. I’d encourage you to still check it out. Thanks for watching!

I never cared about campaign. I just moved MP and zombies but especially MP and I haven’t enjoyed a COD like I enjoyed bo3

Definitely fair! I didn’t play BO3’s campaign for years after it came out and just played MP and zombies too.

I'll always stand by the fact that Hendrick's voice actor gives one of the WORST performances in the series. I mean it's just so bad, man! The writing is pretty awful too which doesn't help. Was so disappointed in Treyarch when I finished this campaign

Yeah, the performance is awful, it sounds like he's constantly trying to shout without waking up his neighbors. It sucks even more because I think the performances for both male/female Players, Taylor, Hall and Kane are really strong, maybe some of the best in the series.

black ops 3 is not even sequel to black ops 2 it sucks plus they turned black ops 3 into a hero shooter you can barely even call it a call of duty clone

Fair enough! I was pretty skeptical of BO3 for these reasons when it came out, but I warmed up to the game over time.

Yeah bo3 is a very cool game. I think you’re right about the body swap ending. I think the point of the game is a warning about today’s technology and how it can get out of hand. This is a good video. Glad to see you passed the shrek check there, but seriously, your videos could do with a trim, that kind of length is a little unhealthy and bordering on metal gear solid dialogue. Take care.

That’s fair! I would definitely rank it lower on the list, but I think it had a lot of untapped potential. Thanks for watching.

I really liked all the innovations that it brought (abilities, character customization, and especially the co-op). But, I found the story to be too convoluted. I think the lack of interesting/likable characters is what hurts it the most. Its a shame because, as you say, the pieces were there. Good job on this.
