For you Bible nerds out there, the Kushite horses are mentioned obliquely in the Bible (Deuteronomy 17:16): 'The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the Lord has told you, “You are not to go back that way again.”'

In 2011 archaeologists actually found a well-preserved horse skeleton in Tombos, northern Sudan. While almost 3.000 years old it still had a bit of fur.

Would be cool to see a DNA analysis of horse populations in Africa vs the thoroughbred breed. Would we find any traces of the 3 foundation stallions of the thoroughbred breed...?

The British veterinary authorities spent forty years importing thoroughbreds to Sudan, so the genetics from the foundation stallions must be in there somewhere. Sadly I do not believe there's been any genetics studies done on Sudanese horses yet, but I'll keep my eyes peeled.
