FFG is rifle powder. FFFG is pistol powder. FFFFG is priming powder (primarily used for flintlock primer.) The best black powder available today is Swiss. In the old days there were many to choose from. Some made their own out of preference or necessity. 44-40 was one of the earliest bottleneck cartridges and had the advantage over straight wall cases in that the neck would expand after the powder exploded thereby effectively sealing the chamber rearward and preventing most blow by of dirty gases into the rest of the firearm. This was more important for lever action rifles to keep them functioning. Great video. Keep up the good work.

I use a fired case as a Dipper , I pour in a volume of powder . allowing for the bullet to seat at proper depth. I then cut the remaining brass off where I marked the powder line . this way I have a dipper of the right amount of powder for every case

Stainless revolvers work pretty well with Black. They don't rust easily, and they clean up really easily. I have a stainless Ruger old army. After shooting it I just remove the grips and cylinder. And wipe the loading arm, cylinder pin, and the ram. Then simply put the cylinder and revolver into the dishwasher. It comes out sparkling and clean.

Thanks for the video elvis, Bp likes to be compressed about a 1/16. Best to fill the case to the base of the bullet then put a 1/16 hard wad over the powder then seat the bullet. You should feel a little crunch when you seat the bullet. Some folks use a separate compression die but you dont really need it in revolver cartridges. You might be surprised at how well and consistantly it shoots. John davis

Great video and very good advice. I was told a good reason to lightly compact a black powder cartridge is to keep it from settling on its own and creating its own air gap and potential problems Clean up is a chore that goes with the territory ! Great fun !

No problem arises if there is an air space in the cartridge. I don't believe it's possible to pack enough powder in a 38 case to overpressure the firearm.

Hey, Elvis! Hello again. Glad to see you exploring possibilities. 😁 You have a basic understanding of black powder. 1F, 1.5F, 2F, 3F, & 4F. 4F is the finest granules, and reserved for either priming of a flintlock, or the smallest cases. 1F is generally considered cannon granulation. (small cannons). 2F is generally considered a good choice for shotgunning, and large bore rifles, and 3F is the nominal granulation for pistol cartridges. (some overlap allowed) Drop tubes (30 to 60 inches) were used to load cases - better compaction of the powder without compression. You can get up to 5grains more powder into a case using drop tubes. Plus, the old balloon head cases would hold about 5 grains more than modern web head cases. (for a total of 10 grains more powder than most modern Reloaders normally load into BP cases) The English with their 303 (first runs) not only used drop tubes, but ALSO compressed the black powder and managed to get 80 grains of black powder into the 303 case. Try that now, and see how far you can get........if you manage 60 grains, I'll call you "good"........ DEFINITELY avoid ANY air space between powder and bullet. Air space can allow explosive detonation - enough to bulge the barrel of even a modern rifle. Fill that space somehow (kapok, cotton, corn meal, additional powder, whatever). Even though it was black powder, most pistol cartridges attained a speed of 700 - 900 fps - with the old 32's near the 700 mark and the old 45's near the 900 mark. Rifles could get up to 2000 fps, but typically had to be "tweeked" to achieve that. (specific lube or paper patching or etc) Lubrication was the BIGGEST key to successfully using black powder - and still is. Good lubrication not only gives you the best performance shot to shot, but also allows for sustained shooting. If you can't shoot six cylinders in a revolver WITHOUT any drag or binding or issues, then your lubricant simply isn't good enough. In case you haven't already figured it out, I cut my teeth on black powder, and I still have a love affair with it. Don't get me wrong - I love modern powders also, but what is it that they say??? "you never forget your first love"???

During the great switch over from Black powder to smokeless around the turn of the century, revolvers, it seems were given short shrift. The brand spanking new 9mm Parabelum was always loaded with smokeless. It HAD to be. Can you imagine keeping an automatic action running using that filthy old black powder? So well into the 20th Century we had 32....38.....44....45 Revolvers running on the same fuel that powered the gunfight at the OK corral and the Alamo fight.

Viewers should be aware that black powder charges are measured by volume and not by weight as you are doing here with your scale. I think you're doing it for convenience sake, and your weight measurement ends up giving you about the right volume of black powder so your bullet when seated will slightly compress the charge. Just a fine point. Thanks for your vid.

Black powder *SUBSTITUTES* are measured by the volume of a given amount (by weight, that’s why it says grains, a measure of weight) of real gunpowder.
@PS-rr2jt
@PS-rr2jt 3 жыл бұрын
@@ironmatic1 Exactly. The perpetuation of the misconception that BP “is measured by volume” is a persistent one. Nearly all metallic cartridges (BP or smokeless) are filled volumetrically, but the charge is based on weight, the “grain”. All one has to do is look up pictures of original boxes of BP cartridges. It says right on most of the boxes how many grains of BP they are charged with. As has been pointed out, the important thing to ensure is that there’s no air gap between the powder and bullet when using black powder. Compressed loads ensured that no powder settling can create air gaps. When BP substitutes came around, that’s when things got confusing. Pyrodex is only equivalent to black powder by volume, not weight, as you said. So you put the BP substitute confusion and mix that with the lack of understanding of how propellant charges are determined/vs how the cases are actually filled and we get this common misconception that BP is only to be measured by volume.

For your information since Gunpowder is made from stable chemicals, a long as it is kept dry, it will last indefinitely and not deteriorate at all. And "Gunpowder" is what DuPont called it and they had been making it since 1802 and should know what to call it. Gunpowder and Blasting powder same stuff different granulation.

@PS-rr2jt
@PS-rr2jt 3 жыл бұрын
This is a common misconception. Original metallic cartridges loaded with black powder were absolutely based on the grain weight of the charge. Look at pictures of the old boxes they came in. I saw a box of old BP 38 special and it said right on the box “21 grains” of powder. 44-40, 45-70, 56-50...it says the grain weight of the powder right in the name. Grains are a measurement of weight, not volume. Muzzleloader are typically charged volumetrically with a horn or flask and powder measure, but that volume is based on a grain weight equivalent. It would be awkward to try to weigh a charge in the field, which is why the equivalent volume was calculated. Part of the confusion started when Pyrodex substitute came along. Pyrodex is not black powder and it has different burn characteristics, so it’s not equivalent to black powder by weight, but was made to be equivalent by volume. Therefore, you measure Pyrodex with the same volumetric measure as your normal BP charge. Anyway, the important thing to remember here is, regardless of the charge you load, make sure there aren’t any air gaps between the powder and bullet. This is the reason people use fillers like cream of wheat, to take up that air gap.

elvis you should also lube size those PC'd boolits with bore butter it will greatly reduce the corozion from sticking as will coating the metal parts with straight-up DAWN dish soap. i mean if coating the outside of campfire cooking pots with dawn will make all that cooking soot slick right off. i grew up shooting traditional muzzle loaders and to clean those you take the stock off put the breech of the barrel in a bucket of hot water with a drizzle of dawn dish soap patch the ram rod and piston that up and down the bore untill the water out of the nipple isnt black and the coton patch is white. then when the barrel is dried slick a patch with dawn and run that one lap through the bore so there is a light film in the bore before the next shoot. i know it's been said many many times black is measured by volume not weight, i tested this with a brass volume measure set at 70gr then poured that into my C&H beam scale and dang if it didnt scale at 71.3gr i did this 25 seperate times at 70gr 60gr 30gr and 20gr, each volume was within 3gr weight of the volume increment. Hey EA. Im not sure if realise or not but black powder is always mmeasured by volume NOT weight. I know you are just filling the case in this instance but that is an important diff. between black and smokeless. Also you should only use 2ff or 3fff, never 4ffff. It is used ONLY for priming flintlocks. Pressure spikes can occur. 25+ years shooting black powder. Just some FYI my freind.

Black is fun stuff! I find my Ruger SB 44MAG doesn't tolerate much of it though, and even less when using Pyrodex, not making it through an entire cylinder before locking up from the fouling. "Looser" fitted guns will work longer using it, before needing a dunking in water at least to keep it going. One case where Ruger quality actually works against you! Years ago, me and a friend tried BP in his 9MM Hi-Power, and it functioned a flawlessly as it could, cycling just fine through three mags worth, which was all we had loaded. Again, a "looser" fitted gun. I was hoping for some velocity readings if possible, not having them was the only disappointment I found in this video. Thanks for the efforts.

Due to the increased powder charges too, in an effort to save powder, couldnt you just seat the bullet really deep? 38 S&W Special, 158gr LRN wax blend lube, 21½gr FFFg BP, Balloon head case. would get about 800fps in 6" guns. This was the "standard" M&P load afaik. @@spareiChan A “grain” is a measure of mass (weight for our purposes), not volume. Original BP metallic cartridges were absolutely charged by weight. If you look at boxes of these old cartridges, they say right on them the grain charge of BP. Heck, it’s in the name of a lot old cartridges - 45-70, 44-40, etc. The 70 and 40 is the grain weight of the BP charge. The important aspect of volume is that there should be no air gaps between the bullet and powder (typically stacked via drop tube and somewhat compacted), but that’s managed by using an appropriate weight of powder.

Elvis, very much appreciate this video. I have a stainless GP-100 like yours but have never shot Black Powder (BP) 38 specials through it. I have loaded 45 colt with BP and shoot it almost exclusively in my Uberti 45 Colt Clone single action (much easier to disassemble and clean ). Just two thoughts, I don't think you are supposed to use FFFF in a cartridge, it is intended for black powder rifle flash pans, and I don't think you should be using a plastic funnel/scoop, to avoid static buildup and potential sparks. I think anyone who shoots BP will really enjoy it - it was clear you really enjoyed every aspect of it, from the stinky sulphur smell to the 'boom' and clouds of white smoke.

I got a friend that's got a snub nose Taurus stainless steel asked me one time if he wanted me to load up some 38 special black powder thought maybe he might like the flash and the smoke and the roar he said sure and I told him I said make sure you clean your gun thoroughly after you shoot this it could be really messy he didn't he gave me the gun to clean and I just threw it in soapy bucket of water till it freed up it was locked up tight

Black powder is far less corrossive than pyrodex or even triple 7. The chlorate in the pyrodex is nasty, after 3 days the inside of the barrel looks like mold is growing all over it. On the other hand, as long as you are liberal with the proper grease, real black powder is not a problem. Old Eynsford is so clean that I don't need to clean it as long as I shoot it regularly. Organic grease and regular use is I suspect how most old timers back in the eighteen hundreds used their cap and ball revolvers. I dought they were as neurotic about cleaning as people are today. Although with the black powder substitutes you have to be neurotic orthere will be pitting fairly quickly. Fortunately for them these horrible substitutes did not exist yet. Subs are the awful result of over controling regulations. Sort of like the gas cans that cause you to spill gas everywhere because they are required to be spill proof. When those came out I bought surplus jerry cans and am totally happy with them, they pour well and will last the rest of my life rather than breaking every two or three years. My state won't even allow you to buy jerry cans now, never mind what I think of that.

I have never bought black powder before I only make it. I don't know about FFG black powder being I've only made it. It looks like to me when you showed the consistency of it that the Potassium nitrate may not have been ground to the consistency I normally grind it so 5 or 600+ FPS with that grind is not surprising. I don't claim to know anything about the other powders you mentioned.

Only shoot in it whatever is printed on the barrel as fitting it. That means no 9MM for sure, and only whatever 38 is printed on it. 38's came in a variety of types, so make sure you get the correct one for your old gun, else it could be a disaster!

You had my cringing a bit when you started weighing the charges on a scale, not trying to be a wise guy and I know this is an older video, but you never want to throw black powder charges by weight, black powder is to be measured by volume, I know it's a tad confusing because the volume measurement is still called grains but trust me measure by volume NOT weight (if you need to get one of the measures used for actual muzzle loaders), even weighing the volume charge on a scale does not work because the density of black powder can REALLY vary from batch to batch lot to lot and brand to brand even if you stay with 2f-3f or whatever, also you would not want to use 4f as a main charge powder, it is meant for charging the pan in a flint lock and would be rather unsafe used as the main charge weight, the 2f-3f-4f thing refers to the actuall granual size of the powder itself 2f being larger grain size than 3f and so on, and it is this graniual size that determins the burn rate of the powder itself 2f being slower than 3f and so on, by the time you get down to 4f it's pretty much like the really old camera's of the old west days, it is gone in a flash so quick you can't even hardly catch it with the naked eye kind of thing, in fact it is nothing more than very slightly finer grain than 4f powder that they use in them, so if you use it as a main charge it tends to act very quick more like an explosion (not actually what you want in a gun)and less like a propelent (people think of gun powder as an explosion but in truth it's more a rapid controlled expansion of the gasses to drive the bullet with a smooth progressive pressure curve not the instantaneous pressure spike of an explosion), black powder will also have that more like an explosion and less like a controlled rapid push thing if you leave the air space in the case like you talk about in the video, thats why you would be safer to completely fill the case with powder to the top of it than leave only a bit half filling the case ( in fact I have loaded numerous and various different cartridges threw the years, about 25 years now to be exact, and one of them is the 38 special and the charge I use fills the case to about a guarter of an inch from the top of the case, and is heavily compressed when my self cast 160 grain round nose bullet is seated on it), anyhow I have done a LOT of black powder stuff over the years like competition shooting with both flint lock and percussion muzzleloader, loaded for and shot competition with various calibers of the old sharps type rifles (45/70, 45/110, 50/90, 50/120, 50/140), and as I said have loaded the 38 special, 45 colt, 44/40, 38/40, 32/20, 30-30 and several others with good old black powder for right at 25 years like I say and I've learned just a tad about it over those years,(I also did cowboy action and authentic reinactment stuff so was always into the oldies), anyhow have fun with it and be safe.

A “grain” is a measure of weight (actually mass, but here on Earth the gravitational pull is pretty consistent, so weight works). Because black powder is pretty forgiving, we’ve determined what the volumetric equivalent (roughly) to a desired “grain” charge is, but this would vary depending on the granular size of the powder you’re using. Surely a 15gr charge of 4F would take up a lot less space than a 15gr charge of 1F. It’s for this reason, among several others that people continue the misconception that BP metallic cartridges are loaded by volume. The case may be filled by a volumetric dispenser (pretty much all cartridges are, BP or smokeless), but the charge was determined by weight. Look at original boxes of BP cartridges. They give the charge of powder in grains right on the box. Grains don’t work like ounces, where one is a measure of volume or weight, grains are always a measurement of weight. Our job is to determine how to load an appropriate weight of BP AND fill the case so there’s no air gaps between the powder and bullet, sometimes using filler material if necessary.
