Let's be clear, the heavy rains and big surf did not CAUSE the bluffs to fail. They simply contributed to accelerating the process. Any geotechnical engineer will tell you that those bluffs always were going to fail. It was just a matter of time.

There are so many people, in the summer, who pitch their blankets right at the bottom of the cliffs, it's unbelievable. I've actually warned people in the past but gave up because so many just ignore the signs which tell sunbathers to stay away. Every couple of years, people get buried alive. I used to run on that beach in the 1970s. I remember some times at high tide that the surf was hitting the bottom of the bluff. In addition you could sometimes see water seeping out of the sides of the cliff in areas where there was housing (really expensive housing!) relatively close to the cliff. We knew then that the stability was questionable. It's a little sad as I remember being in that area, especially alone on Sunday mornings, as a reallly beautiful sanctuary. I very seldom saw more than two or three people once you got half a mile from the Torry Pines parking lot.

@@jobobperry Shawn didn't say that high surf was the "cause"... LOL... and I blame Gravity... the entire cost line has been falling into the ocean for several millions of years... at some point most of California will be under water... so who's surprise at this?... The oceans are not rising as fast as predicted by the panic but coastal erosion is more of a normal physics problem of plate tectonics, subduction, earthquakes, and normal wave action... you should blame people for building homes on top of those cliffs for being STUPID...

We spent a fair amount of time down there in the 80s, so that’s pretty stunning to see. But of course so many landscapes we love are the product of erosion over millennia. We can pretend they are static, but it only appears that way because our own lives are incredibly short by geologic standards.

A lot of the footage I have seen of the collapse happening appears to have happened during lower tide. At that point there was still plenty of distance from the base of that collapse out to the water's edge. In footage shown here, the tide is higher and that clear beach stretch is covered with surf. Visitors must stay aware of Tide levels and times as well as keeping an eye on the cliffs. Incoming tide can cut them off from a safe retreat if more collapse occurs.

This is southern California, where hills slide in the winter with great regularity. Those bluffs are made of rock chunks, sand and clay. It absorbs water til it can no longer bear the weight and then it slides. Happens all over down there. And when it rains, it RAINS! I remember freeway underpasses in San Diego with four or five feet of water in them. And people would try to drive thru. The old saying is true - don't build your house on sand. And try to be smarter than water.

Take a walk along a few of California's beautiful beaches anywhere between border with Oregon at the North with Oregon, and the border at the South with Mexico. On most beaches with cliffs you will see they consist of loose soil ("dirt") sand, gravel, pebbles, and boulders ---> Unconsolidated soil, not particularly resistant to gravity, or erosion by wind & runoff from precipitation... *_West Coast Beaches have been eroding and collapsing since the oceans rose at the end of the last ICE AGE._*

(with our suits on of coarse...lol ))...I was 3 months pregnant with my son, now 45, and our friends had a infant 2 year old( only nude one amongst us)...We climbed down the side ot the cliff untill we reached the bottom. From the top of the cliff, it looked like small Ants down at the bottom running around. when we got to the bottom, we realized what the small creatures were was a group of nude Vollyball players, playing volleyball nude on the beach. Well , that was quite an eye opener at the age of 23....So innocent we were them, I had all I could do to not look, but to just get on by and find a place to lay in the sun and try to ignore the rest on the beach. that was the one and only time we went with them to any beach..So crazy now to see what is happening on Blacks Beach. Working with them a lot their language skills are pretty good for their ages. Living in the southwest, I have started slipping in Spanish. In another three years I’ll sneak in French just for fun. Summer of 1975, spent 6 weeks living on blacks beach, after 3 months camping cross country from Pennsylvania. Climbed those cliffs every day, with my dog, to shop for food, shower at university, come back down cliffs, cook on open fire. Had $ in my pocket from sale of my 1965 vw bus, later rented a house in Leucadia and spent 28 years living in various mountain areas of California. Whoa is me, to have returned to PA in 2003, and, well, here now to watch this epic moving of a hillside under which I slept.

I've been flying over these cliffs for many years from the nearby glider park. The big expensive homes near the edge of the cliffs use a lot of irrigation for palm trees and lush green gardens. When flying close to the cliffs I can see where this water is seeping out between layers of rock, obviously weakening the cliffs. One house has a large swimming pool near a vertical cliff. It's likely there will be more large dramatic slides in this area.

I'm only here 8 yrs. What did all san diego beaches look like in 70s? On long Island we just pump more sand into fire Island which itself was man made i believe. Some years we lose 300 feet of beach then the rebuild it back by pumping sand in .

If you watch it happen. You can see the black mass at the base get pushed or pull the the cliffs as it comes on to the beach. Is that black material lava or ash?
@llanitedave
@llanitedave Жыл бұрын
It's sandy mud, the layers that the cliffs are resting on are inherently unstable, and the extra rain has soaked into the rock and made it softer. It looked pretty cool oozing up like that... it was caused by the added weight of all the fallen debris pressing down on the soft muddy material, squeezing it out from under the base. Same thing that happens when you step into a soft mud, it squeezes upwards around your feet.

Just how much money do you want the govt to spend collapsing all those cliffs so it becomes gentle slopes? I bet it would cost a lot more than we spend on the military budget. Once the cliffs become slopes, the ocean surf will just eat at the slopes until it is all cliffs again. I do not think you understand the magnitude of what you are asking.
