It's unique, not the best but it's him, no one else did it that way at the time he was kind of a revolutionary in comparation with their contemporary guitarists, as hendrix or Santana developed grate styles, Michael Romeo just beats them for far, but he can't be at the same level of the simple but percisley style of geezer, he just makes it simple but rare, it's like he's chilling while making love to the guitar, we can't compere him ti bb king or zappa or any other guitarist because there's no common ground, his style was si unique that is his own self through the chords, he take it to the grave, wherever he is, there's goooood music

Geezer is so much more influential than he gets credit for. Anytime I pick up a bass a little Geezer shows through. And it's impossible to imagine Sabbath songs without those basslines and lyrics.

@Micktaylorify
@Micktaylorify Жыл бұрын
I agree, Bill Ward is an absolute LEGEND!! However, to be fair, in a founding band unless you are the lead singer or one of those absolutely irreplaceable musicians, like Iommi or Keith Richards or Geddy Lee, nobody is irreplaceable. I was at the 13 tour in Toronto, centre floor, and I can safely say that Tommy Clufetos was MORE than adequate as a replacement for Ward. Of course, I would have like to have seen Ward myself, but 3 quarters of a dollar is better than nothing. Plus there was legit rumours that Ward’s health was declining back then. Being a drummer is the most physically taxing of all musicians and you need to be on your game.

More than we’ll ever know…. What other band in the late 60’s early 70’s was using drop d tuning and doing metal chops on the guitar like they were. Yes jimmy paige with zeppelin equally inspired guitar techniques for the future but his style wasn’t like Sabbaths style.

Bill Ward is the real deal. Him and Geezer have never been matched as a rhythm section. This song defines Black Sabbath as the Grandfathers of Metal. I was 13 when I first heard this song. It was something that had never been done and the dark chords, chugging then bass/drum come in. Also every song in their concerts sound exactly like the album.

Something that I feel particularly stands out about Sabbath is that both Iommi and Butler both play relatively softly - just look at how Tony picks those thundering riffs, not with insanely heavy gauge strings or with 7+ string guitars but with a light touch. Butler is also relatively rare in that he doesn't use a pick which seems ubiquitous in modern metal music. (Apart from Bill Ward - he's always beat the drums so ferociously it's almost like he wants to kill them!)

I saw them in New York, Fillmore East, 1971. We lived in NJ. 'Sir Lord Baltimore' opened. Ozzy was way in the back with a dark purple spotlight. OMG. We did nepalese temple balls or Lebanon hash, I think I sorta forget. OMG. I think the fcking NYC subways must have slowed down, with the great Bill Graham production's insane bass amplifiers. Walking home through Washington Square Park at 3AM was an adventure. 🙁😬

To express this song by words, I think imitating the famous phrase of Stravinsky referring to Beethoven's Grosse Fuge is the best. An absolutely heavy piece of music that will be heavy forever.
