Fantastic version... When I heard this live version with an orchestra on Finyl Vinyl in 1986, I was amazed... Such a clever improvisation by Ritchie, then the real track with an orchestra and some bits by Beethoven to let the orchestra shine on its own ! Hats off !! I was into Malmsteen later on in 1986, but Rainbow and Ritchie Blackmore always stayed deep in my heart. Nobody plays like Ritchie... He can be uneven but he can reach the stars too ! And he doesn't repeat himself, in his good days, his technique is astonishing, he's very subtle and his choice of notes very personal. His sound at this point in Rainbow was really beautiful... Cleaner, deeper and wider than in Deep Purple... He brought a bit of that in the reformed DP on Perfect Strangers. I'm so glad they released a DVD version on those live tracks in Japan, plus other videos. Great job on the video, it's incredibly clear and neat !

Ritchie's picking technique is astonishing for a rock guitarist, his hand "floats" above the strings without resting on the guitar. Somebody said once back in the 70s that most jazz guitarists would give a limb for Ritchie's technique!
@Marctull666 ай бұрын
I didn't know that quote. I'm quite disgusted that he doesn't get more praise, in polls, etc...He's too often forgotten or too down in the polls... I mean he's as important as Hendrix and Beck and for me, more than Page (who I deeply admire yet) and above all, more than Clapton.. .... I mean for me he's much more a legend than Clapton - who often relied on external composers, by the way, and was quite uninspired after Cream and Derek and the Dominos, which means ages ago... At least RB composed his tracks.. Even though not alone quite often but with singers, or a keyboard player... or Roger Glover. I remember he once said that Jimmy Page was awesome because he was a great composer (with Plant and Jones, this said) .. He used to be difficult, he's got a lot of contradictions but I don't think he's so pretentious... and he's become very different with age, since he met Candice Night, which was something like 30 years ago, when you think about it.
@ThinPicks6 ай бұрын
@@Marctull66 The quote was from the old British magazine Guitar, a journalist compiled his top ten of electric guitarists and Ritchie was no2 after Jimi Hendrix. 3rd was Jan Akkerman of Focus, another top tier musician, weren't we lucky in the 70s!👍

The intro is poss’ the best slice of Ritchie .. at his most creative, which exists on film. It has his sound, phrasing, dynamics, inventiveness, all working together perfectly. Other guitarists can play more notes and faster .. they didn’t COME UP WITH the notes woven into his legacy with Purple, Rainbow 🌈and Blackmore’s Night. When all’s said and done people will eventually realise how great he is and was .. and amazingly .. how underrated he is. No one plays guitar like Ritchie Blackmore.

Ok. So EVH is in full swing at this time. Likewise Yngwie and Uli Roth, along with all the other shredders influenced by Ritchie who have supposedly eclipsed him. But while many of them have indeed introduced their own thing, and through sheer dedication advanced the state of the art (as all would hope), Blackmore stands up and shows that not only is he still relevant - indeed he can still crush it, and remains at the pinnacle of rock guitar ability and and showmanship.
