Black Sabbath Forbidden Remix 2024 Review/Reaction + Tony Martin albums ranking WORST TO BEST!
I love the Tony Martin era of Black Sabbath! Tony Iommi finally put out the box set Anno Domini 1989-1995 featuring the albums from Tony Martin years of the band, Headless Cross, TYR, Cross Purposes, and of course and new remixed version of Forbidden.
I go through my thoughts after waiting at least 5 years for this thing to come out and rank all the Tony Martin albums including Eternal Idol that was not in the boxset.

I listened to Forbidden today after watching your video. Does sound better. But the songs and singing are still not of the usual Iommi/Martin quality. Can't wait for Born Again to get a remix/remaster. That one will sound massive

The singing is the one thing they really couldn’t fix. The original stripped down production didn’t have any big layered overdubs like Tony’s earlier Sabbath albums so there wasn’t anything to remix there sadly. I actually love the big echoey sound on Born Again but would love a remix on that too just to see what Iommi comes up with because he said he’d like to do it.

It was real exciting to hear that album roar in my car speakers. Rusty Angels was a song I always overlooked until now.

Shaking off the Chains for me improved dramatically. That riff is killer always thought it was, it just seemed buried under the murky production. Am I the only one who thinks Cozy’s sound Improved w/the remix. I think it’s a strong suit of the remix along w/ Iommi beefing up the guitar Sound not surprisingly.

Technical Ecstasy is in my top 5 Black Sabbath albums. I love the prog-elements they included within the songs.
@BlackTerror

Although I rank Technical Ecstasy low in their discography the gap between it and 13 is wide. 13 isn’t really all that bad musically, I just hate how it was just a recreation of their early albums (Rick Rubin’s idea). TE had cool moments of originality like She’s Gone which I think is Ozzy’s best vocals ever.

@@BlackTerror I don't like 13. But I can understand Rick Rubin's idea that they should sound like in the 70s, because everyone of them (Ozzy, Tony, Geezer) made modern metal albums in later years and they weren't that good, at least for me.

@@piotrlangtvedt I had high hopes for Geezer's solo band GZR but I didn't like it all all. I was thinking it would sound something like Sabbath considering he co-wrote a lot of riffs but I also hated the modern metal sound he did.

There's badass riffs all over the album. They just needed a little shine on it to make it hit harder. Check out Sick and Tired, and Shaking off the Chains on youtube and you'll be immediately impressed with the new mix.

I never thought Forbidden was a bad album or that it had bad mixing, not sure why Tony thought it needed to be remixed, he should've put all that time and energy into remixing Born Again, I love that album, but I admit some parts are noticeably off.
@BlackTerror

The remix definitely gives it more oomf! But doesn’t really reinvent the album. It makes it more powerful sounding when you jam it on the car speakers. I love the over the top sound for born again. I’d be interested by what Tony might do to it but to me it sounded like what metal should sound like, like it was recorded in a haunted house or something.

Cool to see you're still making new videos. The box set sounds interesting with the remixed songs. Do you still listen to the old CDs too? I have CDs put into my computer and then can MP3 them as needed. My car's CD player unfortunately stopped working so I go through the radio receiver with my MP3 player. I still have a CD player that I'll play once in awhile at home.

I'm still making videos. I'd say I have been lazy but I really just wanted a break. I was doing my other hobbies but I have a whole bunch of new ideas for videos to start making them again. I still buy cd's because I like to collect and want hard copies of everything but rarely listen to them in a player anymore. I just rip them to my computer and load them on my phone or a thumbdrive for my car. The box set is really cool but the remixed album is a dream come true for a hardcore music nerd. Taking a marginal album and making it a little bit better is awesome to sit and just endlessly reanalyze.

@@BlackTerror Cool, glad to hear it. Sounds like a great improvement for that album. Yes, sadly the days of CDs are mostly fading in 2024 it seems. I used to look forward to release day of a new music CD at the stores, but like DVDs and blu-rays, CDs are disappearing most places. It can be faster and easier at this point to buy an MP3 Album most times than ordering the CD music by time it arrives in the mail. But if it's the same price, many times worth waiting for the CD. Thanks.

@@BlackArroToons Sadly, it slipped my mind because I ordered the set on my lunch break in my car, but I should have went to the actual record store the next town over from me to buy it on release day instead of Amazon. Not only physical media, I got to support the stores too.

Gotta say Headless Cross is the best Tony Martin era album IMHO. Ozzy/Dio era no. 1 😊 Unfortunately they couldn't include The Eternal Idol album in the remixes.

Eternal Idol did get a really good remaster of its own a few years ago. It comes with a second disc with all the Ray Gillan demos. I totally recommend it. I flip flop a lot on Headless Cross and Eternal Idol. Then this week I’ve been jamming Cross Purposes all week. I’m so happy for this box set.

@@piotrlangtvedt I forgot to mention that in the video. I have that set, and the cd could have used a remaster including all the tracks from the video or a full remix would have been sweet. A while back I saw a budget import(?) on dvd that had an incomplete version of the show.

@@BlackTerror I am not a fan of Tony Martin era, but I would buy a live cd from 1994 immediately, because he gave the Ozzy/Dio songs a new life. Whould have been nice too if the could do a one cd compilation of the Tony Martin tracks remastered.

@@piotrlangtvedt Your in Europe so it might still be in print there in some version, The Sabbath Stones was a best of Tony Martin album from the 90's. Not remastered but but it was cool and I always have it loaded on my phone for my Tony Martin era fix and to save space (I have a crappy phone with little storage).
