Ray Gillen died so young, he was such an amazing talent and one of my favorite singers. I was lucky enough to catch Badlands live at L'amour in Brooklyn... Simply AMAZING!!

When I first heard the Tony Martin version, I was amazed, because he did a great job on this album, as well as on Headless Cross, but this version is perhaps even better, not only because Ray Gillen is (was:( a great singer, but also because I think Tony Iommi's guitarsound here is more like the original Sabbath guitarsound.

I think this album was written for Ray Gillen who has a more more Hughes style, while Tony Martin has a more epic Dio-style voice that suited very well the material on Headless Cross and Tyr. Eternal Idol has a more rock'n'rollish style in my opinion. But both are great!

i really wish they would re-release this album, with Gillen's vocals on it. i enjoyed Tony's versions too, but Gillen is an all-time favorite of mine. Great vocalist!

@brandonleespitler A double CD version was released in the UK. Disc 1 contains the album with Tony Martin's vox and two bonus tracks while Disc 2 contains the album with Ray Gillen's vox. The former is re-mastered while the latter version is the mastered one not demo version which can be enjoyed here. Watch out for some interesting differences between one version and the other....and enjoy the Sabbath :)

That may be true but different leagues is not necessarily a bad thing. Nobody is in the same league as Halford but I love many different singers for different reasons. Me personally, I think Martin added way more color, texture and tone to this song. Gillen just threw his range at it.

Gillen is not way better than Martin. I prefer Martin on this song. He colors it with texture and different levels of tone with a unique delivery. Gillen just sounds thin and threw his range all over the place. Two different animals really. When people shit on Tony Martin…I direct them to the song Nightwing. Nuff said.

On all of the Eternal Idol songs, I agree. Martin is fantastic on the next two Sabbath albums, Headless Cross and Tyr. I always thought Martin didn't sound as good on EI. When I heard the Gillen versions and read about the recording of the album, I understood why.
