I'm fascinated by Eleanor's outfits. She dresses SO differently now than she did in season one or two, even compared to season three! it's a fascinating reflection of her status and power. compared to last season, where she was forced to dress more womanly, her clothes are made of much nicer stuff now, you can see lace at the hemlines, and she has more posh jewelry. it's such a change from where she started.

The best thing abt this show is how formidable our protagonist's enemies are. Even when they're taken out early, they still instilled some dread or fear for some time; no "muaha let's walk all over these silly goons", in season 4 the threat is very much existential and we know they're strong as hell. Makes us very anxious during battle plans lol

I'm a bit astounded that this being the prequel to Treasure Island, a classic bit of literature that I thought everyone had at least heard of, there is still some worrying about the fate of certain characters. In some cases, though I won't say who, there is no need whatsoever to fear for their deaths.

After watching your reactions I usually have to jump over and stream a few episodes ahead because the need for the Black Sails fix are too strong to ignore.

To be honest, when i first watched the series i hated Eleanor. But with every rewatch and every reaction to this series that i watch, the more and more I've grown sympathetic and not only understanding of, but in agreement with many of her actions/choices. I think because we know for a fact that Vane wasn't the one who allowed his crew to rape and beat Max in season 1 which she didn't believe and what no one in her position would have either, which started the major ongoing conflict and back and forth between her and Vane, the narrative of the show seems to want to make the viewer to dislike her. At the end of the day we as the viewer, it's hard to remember that just because we are shown shit, doesn't mean that the characters in said series are aware of these things, we arre privy to information that characters may not be. So her hanging of Vane is much more understandable when you keep this in mind. Since we all love Vane so much, it's easy to overlook the amount of times he's betrayed or fucked with her in return. I mean, the biggest incident which sent the two characters down the paths they ended up on by the end, where Eleanor stole the governor's daughter thus leading to him killing her father, the only reason she had to do that was because he wasn't being reasonable and basically forced her to do something. Something i might add, if she hadn't done, Vane and literally every single one of his pirates in the fort would have been massacred by Flynt in order to take said fort and retrieve the girl by force. I also like Woods more and more with every rewatch as well. In a lot of ways he's a fuckin badass and is both Silver's and Flynt's match is so many ways. And his actions are completely understandable based on his perspective and the knowledge he was working with through his time in this series.

Well said on Eleanor. It's totally understandable the raw emotions her actions induce during a first watch of this show. But yes analysing her objectively, she is just a very flawed and damaged person (understandable given her upbringing) who's actions can be seen as unintentionally self destructive. People give her crap for taking Abigaile but don't realise she rescued a girl being held captive and in doing so, stayed loyal to her partner in Flint as they were working towards the same goal from the start. Personally I think Woods is a great villain, played brilliantly by Luke Roberts but deep down is a pretty shitty person - I won't elaborate cause of spoilers.

@@fl8780 Another thing i love about Woods is how perfectly he mirrors Flint's character. So much so that even Woods mentioned it on their parley at the beach in season 3. A guy who believes in his goals and is willing to become a monster in order to achieve said goals.

As much as Billy has propped up Silver, his legend is mostly fiction. Even if he was named Pirate King....Teach would never follow him because he only respects the strong. Aside from Vane who was more a protégé, Flint is the only one he has spoken to with respect as a pirates pirate. It'll certainly be interesting to see how things play out though, you are in for a ride. Also...I'm with Anne, Vane will be missed but f$ck Vane right now, it's time to focus on the future.

In this season I find that episodes 3, 4, & 6 as rough episodes to watch for one reason or another. And that episode 5 the nightmare for one character is created by the person they “loved” which creates situation in episode 6. And completes the wish I had wished for to happen but in the same stroke of genius writing make me tell myself: “I wanted/wished for this, but not this way and not in/for this reason”. Side note also: since this a prelude for treasure island as far as I can remember (and limited knowledge of the book) by my count there are 3 characters in this show that have dialogue that have an active role in the book. The people who were playing the characters kinda knew they as a character were untouchable when it came to being killed off, but everything else is on the table. And the writers and producers made sure that when they wrote/produced them in the show that were building them to the point that when you read/see them in the book that you have a better understanding of who they are and the reasons why they are the way they are. At least that’s what I got from listening to Jonathan E. Steinberg (co-writer of the show) on a podcast. And the first time I saw this season i told myself I finally got to see the monster that did not get to see last season.
