I wish the show worked as a TI prequel, but there are way too many inconsistencies (most of which are ending spoilers, so not gonna say anything more). Still, Black Sails is one of the great TV dramas. Watching these reactions has been a blast.

Or they could watch Treasure Island with Wallace Beery as Long John Silver and Lionel Barrymore as Billy Bones. It's an old movie, 34 I think, but it's probably the closest to the book. It is a pretty good movie.

The bird Teach referred to was probably an albatross. They're big damn birds and were considered good luck among sailors. See Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner for a poetic depiction of what happens if a sailor looks at one and thinks, "dinner"

I know y'all just had a podcast episode about how Black Sails is your most underrated show, and I agree, but chiming in to say I've loved your thoughtful, emotional reactions and I started watching BECAUSE of the Black Sails videos. I just binged it earlier this year and couldn't get enough; I'll never get to experience it for the first time again, but y'all are the next best thing! I love how much you both came to love these characters and their complexities and the joy of a good story told perfectly.

I feel like Madi was bluffing and she kind of admits it with her "What choice did you leave me" comment. I wholeheartedly believe Silver would have told her where the cache was but I don't think she would have let him. Her mother only wanted 3 people to know where it was and Madi would have respected that, IMO. Although I do feel like someone among the Maroons should know, too, in the event that Flint, Jack or Silver get killed/captured while off fighting.

The end of this episode, with Silver and Max, is so good. Max is just completely done with it and hasn't realized the transformation that Silver has gone through. All the way from season 1, where this hunt for the gold really started with them two. I love their dynamic.

she's aware of Silvers transformation, that's exactly why she knows the "long John Silver" persona is bs lol because she knew him as Israel said "before he was long". Silver only changed in that he cares about his crew but he's still a very much a pretender that relies on lies and stories.

@Rosamund Powell I guess that depends on what you mean by ruthless. He's not a physical threat to anyone, Flint only just taught him how to fight and Billy is the only reason ppl think think he's terrifying. He picked up some leadership skills from Maudy as well. I think he's been effective at standing next to great people and picking up skills but the people that truly know him aren't fooled by any of that. It's too bad he had no scenes with Teach because Teach disliked men who were pirates in name only so that would have been interesting

As nice as that sounds they'd never interact with since neither Anne nor Jack knew Teach back then I think they only met Vane when they came to Nassau. Prequels are almost always bad. I'd much rather they do a treasure island story with the existing actors/actresses

Teach's story is just mesmerising. I'm completely taken away to a different place when he starts telling it. Their conversation is one of my favourites of the show. And Vane might be gone, but his name and spirit is well and truly alive in this story.

Totally agree, this whole show is like reading a book. When someone tells a story you can completely visualize exactly what they're describing. I can never gush enough about how incredible the dialogue in this show is.

The actor of Flint, Toby Stephens, said that by the end the show was doing literature (once they got past the production company 'sex and violence' mandate of season 1). Testimony to the quality of writing, especially seeing how he is a classically trained actor.

Yea, it's interesting that she didn't trust him at all at the start but like Flint she sees the big picture and is accustomed to making difficult decisions as a leader.

This episode showed me why Flint is an amazing commander, but wouldn't make a good king. He's an excellent tactician and his crew listens to him because he's incredibly effective in battle and they fear him. However, his treatment of his underlings and how they're all expendable to him is exactly why he wouldn't make a good ruler. People fear Flint, but they also hate him so he would rule more along the lines of a tyrant. People love AND fear Silver, which makes him the perfect king. Someone who looks out for his people's interests, but also has no problem using fear as a weapon when necessary.

you know what, i think billys actions here are entirely flints fault. Flint isnt perfect.. for all his gifts, he really did always treat his crew like garbage, completely expendable, no compassion for them whatsoever... it was bound to catch up to him someday. I feel like Billy is the avatar of his crew's resentment over the years, something flint never really accounted for.

I agree that Flint hasn't always treated his crew the best but Billy's choice here is his alone with no one to blame but him. For his resentment of Flint hurting the crew, he is now being the "Flint", causing terrible things to be inflicted on the slaves because of his decision.

I don't think the men even care at this point. We seem to forget these men voted Flint back in because he can get them gold not the virtuous Dufresne. These men were not saints and are more concerned about the next plunder, I doubt morals is at the top of their concerns in any given day. They are murderers and thieves

They do incredible break downs of each episode and also have the actors and writers on to discuss their characters and seasons overall. You'll want to be in this universe long after you finish the show haha.

Although Flint was right about retreating, the fact that he looks down on Billy and dismisses his ideas is the reason Billy flipped. You can totally justify his spite towards Flint. In season 1 he tried to kill him and in season 2-3 he was constantly lying for his interest while Billy followed his orders with no remorse. Now that everything is at stake and Silver is missing, Flint could be the new pirate king. And Billy just can't accept this.

Without Rogers Eleonore can’t rule anything in a legitimate way. She’s was almost put her death for her role in Nassau before Rogers came, remember? The British aren’t just going to give her Nassau because she’s Roger’s wife. They would install a new governor. If her grandfather gave her the money and she used it to take over Nassau again she would be in open rebellion against the British crown. And her family would be conspirators. The only thing that gives any kind of legitimacy to Eleonore’s presence in Nassau is her connection to Woods Rogers. So, jack and Teach are correct in saying that they need to put aside their desire for revenge and go after Rogers.

lol Woods turning over Eleanor would be of no benefit to him. Those are Teach's terms, not Flints. He would still have a rebellion to deal with and he would need Eleanor, she's the only reason he even made it this far. It's time to move past the Vane thing, Eleanor's character wasn't just defined by her relationship with Vane. Max just betrayed Silver and the pirates for the same reason Eleanor sided with Rogers.

How did Max betray Anne? There is no way Anne knew about Max's interception of Featherstone's warning to Flint about Rogers' trap. So, how did Max betray Anne? Is this about Max's decision to hand over her portion of the treasure in order to get a seat on Nassau's council? Which happened around the time when Anne and Jack had gathered their portion of treasure and decided to leave Max behind to deal with Rogers and his forces? Is this how Max had betrayed Anne? If you're talking about Max trying to come between Anne and Jack, both were fully aware of this back in Season Two . . . and both had ended up working with her. Also, it was Jack who had betrayed Anne by choosing Max over her, when Featherstone and the rest of Jack's crew were reluctant to work with two women. So, how else did Max betray Anne?

I think Billy is a tragic character. Up to this point Flint has pretty much been an 'end justifies the means' type of guy whereas Billy is all about valuing every single one of his brothers. The fact that he has stuck with Flint this entire time (which meant going against some of his core beliefs), I get it from his perspective. Don't agree, but get it.
