I grew up swimming..in Canada.. joined the Power Swim teams and competitive swimming teams throughout my entire childhood. . One thing we used to do.. was dress in ordinary clothes and submerge... one week we wore winter wear.. and we went out into the bay.. Georgian Bay of the Great Lakes.. bitter cold water.. and we were tossed in. Then we were to tread water... and we were timed to see how long we could make it. And as young strong swimmers... who were completely invested and skilled and confident in water... we couldn't go over 2 minutes. None of us. The heavy wet soggy clothing will drag you down, the cold will numb your brain.. and you will enter the void. You literally cannot fkn THINK. Strong swimmers understand that you can't swim your way through extreme elements.. our human physiology doesn't support it.

When my husband was in boarding school, his "swim test" consisted of being chucked into a cold river, fully clothed, and having to swim out. He very nearly drowned - more than once. The biting cold and heavy clothes, plus his inability to float (he's short and muscular, so low surface area but high density) resulted in his panicking, tiring himself out, and going under. He was fished out, unconscious. Apparently, one of his friends who was a good swimmer also nearly drowned. I was a certified swim teacher and lifeguard, and I cannot imagine having to tread water in the Great Lakes in the cold - that's bonkers!

A necessary video. We were last there in December, only weeks after the November death. Ten seconds after a guide told his group not to approach the waves, what did they do? Ran straight to the waves and cave. There was even Safe Travel warning that day about the waves and to not enter the cave. It breaks my heart, people truly do not understand how dangerous it is.

So where's the issue? There are giant signs, the tour guides tell them - there really isn't much more for authorities to do. People can do with their own lives whatever they like and when they're not a silly tour they are not going to behave any different.

@@ramdas363 I get your point, but you could say the issue is that the Coastguard then have to spend time and money (and potentially risk their own lives) rescuing people or retrieving dead bodies.

I got dragged into the pacific ocean, on a very similar kind of beach, when I was a kid. In January in full winter clothes. I got knocked over, pulled back, and suddenly found myself sucked over the edge of a steep bank of loose stones and gravel. The water was freezing. I was trapped on the bottom and swimming was impossible. Nobody saw it happen. I knew if I didn't claw my way back out against the receding waves on my hands and knees, I would die in less than a minute. I was 11 years old.

Lifelong surfer and swimmer here. People have ZERO idea about how much full clothing in water renders them physically useless. You become one giant sea parachute. Toss in the gasping reflex from cold water, and instantaneous panic, and you're smoked.

The risk of drowning were obviously scary, but even just getting knocked down and having to be soaking wet and standing in the cold wind was more than enough to keep me at an extra far distance away. I seen so many people get knocked over when I was there, and we were on yellow. I can't imagine what the waves are like on red. It's a very beautiful, but scary beach, and people need to be cautious.

People think they can beat the ocean, but you can't. I lived near the ocean, where I lived it was always warm and mild mannered, but even then I didn't dare test my luck. I would never be this callous in such a cold area with such strong unpredictable currents.

It's not enough. You also need to understand and fear, just how quickly a wave can reach you even while you are staring at it thinking "this one isn't that dangerous". And how fucked you can be in no time, if the water even makes it up to your knees.

Im Australian. We have the same issue with tourists. They worry about the animals here, but drowning and the heat are the number one and number two causes of tourist deaths here. King waves will take you faster than you can sneeze. I would be perfectly safe on Iceland's beaches - as an Australian i dont go anywhere near water at beaches unless its white sand and at least 30 degrees celsius! Here, that's how you tell people are northern European tourists - if its 20 celsius and theyre not a surfer but theyre on the beach - theyre northern European.

I was there in October 2018 - the temperature was only just above freezing, clear blue sunny sky but very windy. No way was I going anywhere near the water, I didn't want to spend the rest of the day wearing wet clothes, and didn't have anything to change into, anyway, the cold of the water is big turn off, certainly failed my "big toe" test. Very beautiful place to visit, I drove myself from Reykjavik, also visited waterfalls and he excellent Lava Centre. Great place to visit, enjoy, don't take chances, be sensible, be safe.

Believe this! A beach in a stormy, northerly ocean on a coast with no continental shelf has VERY different wave patterns than a more southerly beach with one. This same sort of thing regularly kills tourists in the Pacific Northwest USA despite posted warnings. I have seen people go for an unplanned wintertime swim in Oregon. I had time to shout “rogue wave!” as I was running inland. By the time they had processed what I said, they were swimming.

Been there ….we were told stay away…..so an idiot goes right up to the waves to take photo, waves took his feet out from under him he survived but his camera did not….he got no sympathy from anyone…..It really is deadly

We can make beaches safe not at all places but some places where people visit regularly. At present fix the difference pole at different places, Attach rope to pole , wear bungee jump suit, while taking bath. Pull the person if we find he or she is drowning , due to high current wave, wear life jackets, rope must be strong and longer. Beaches can employ people for this service. People can get job , win win case for both sides. Another problem is when people take bath some creatures bite them, I have forgotten the name of creature. It's have throny body, it sticks to the body, My suggestions is to wear loose cotton clothing from toes to neck , the creature will remain stick on clothing, not on body. Take a pot in hand for taking head bath, check the water before pouring on head. Not 100 percent safe , but must experiment. This types of cotton suits also can be rented to beaches visitor. Cotton clothing allows water to touch body. Not very thick, it must be thin, which is used for filtering. Jay Bharat.

How do you know where it is safe to walk? Is it marked on the signs? I.e. can you walk along the beach away from the water line and be fine?

Yes they have made it quite clear where the safe line is. There are also detailed instructions in many different languages as you approach the beach.

There are other dangerous beaches like this in the world, for sure. But this one is very popular and accidents frequent. What makes places like this rare is that it's not always dangerous to be swept out to sea. Normally you can just swim back. But the water there gets very deep very fast and the currents are very strong. Making it near impossible to swim back if you do get swept out.

@@TimeWarpIcelandplus it’s bloody freezing cold too and people would have shoes and heavy coats and jackets which would get waterlogged and drag them down. I’ve swum in the Irish Sea in the summer and that was 😊cold enough!

@@fmcm7715 Oh yea, I swim in the ocean on a regular basis. You need to be very used to it and tough as nails to last more than 30 minutes. Even professionals would eventually get hypothermia.

Not unique. It is a function of how there are usually storms in the vicinity and how Iceland has no continental shelf. This causes wave patterns to be significantly more erratic than average for a beach. Similar conditions exist here on the coast of northwestern North America, and every year tourists get swept away by rogue waves despite warning signs here, too. I actually do sometimes go up to the water, but only if I keep a continuous eye on it, have an escape route in mind, and am prepared to run. And I have had to run. You have to act as if the sea can strike at any time, because it can. You can’t treat such beaches as any old normal beach. Normally I just stay out of the wave zone.
