"I was born an idiot. I'm still learning." That makes me respect this man so much. Too many KZbinrs are experimenting with techniques, diets, builds, gardening, etc. But they make 'tutorials' and tell YOU that this is THE answer. They don't know. They read about it or saw a video, same as you; but they don't tell you that. So we follow their advice, thinking that we're hearing from someone with more experience, fail, then think that WE did something wrong. The fact is, when people aren't open about their experiments and lack of experience, when they act like they know, they're setting hundreds - or even thousands - of other ignorant people up for failure.

The fact you share about recycling plastic is so sad. I wish it wasn't true. My friends and I have watched a place take all the collected recyclable plastic and throw it in with the general trash. I've also heard sometimes the plastic gets shipped and burned (but I haven't witnessed that). So like you said, make the most out of plastic as you can, before you "recycle" it, but don't be a hoarder and save every single little piece or you will run out of space to live in your home (because it will be filled with plastic).

KZbin "experts" are a scourge to knowledge and learning. Real people with real experiences are always good to run across as they are rarer than Hen's teeth! PS, I have an important question concerning using Black Soldier fly frass in my garden. My organic gardening mentor warned me away from using it with concerns about pathogens being transmitted to the user.(me)😉 I've searched high and low on any kind of information concern dangers associated with using BSF grass and came up empty handed. Do you know why my friend / mentor gave me this warning? I've got 20 lbs of grass in the shed I'd like to incorporate into the garden. Thanks in advance for any information!

What an AWESOME character Dewey Is!!! Dewey has an awesome START of a great "farm" set-up... A couple "modification" suggestions (things I will probably do) 1) light goes thru the white plastic barrel... Paint or cover the exterior to make it dark inside... 2) the "base" of your stand looks perfect to house the flying stage flies- enclose with window screen to contain the mature "egg layers" 3) make good access from the screen enclosed base to the cardboard egg holders / food area so the flying egg layer can get in and lay the eggs- but not get away... 4) Maybe relocate the cardboard "egg cards" lower to the food areas so it is easy for the flyers to land on them... 5) keep the cycle going... when harvesting the "crawl-outs", put a couple handfuls into the enclosed base to repopulate the flying egg layers... LOVE IT!

"Mother Nature's one mean...". lol. You guys are funny. Cool update. I've heard great things about soldier flies. Seen some about commercial use of them overseas, particularly in Africa. They use them to eat up scraps but most especially to feed to livestock like pigs. Thereby not needing more monoculture farms for high-demand crops like soy beans. I hope to find these critters in my compost next year! Thanks for sharing!

I would think you could paint it black, and then paint it white again, that way it still looks white, but has a black layer of paint to block out light. Also, I've heard the flies seek out light, so it how they lure them into a netting box to monitor growth and to breed in for large scale operations. (sorry i don't remember which video i saw that in)

I don't know about all that 30-40 degree range but there are loads of them here on north Ga. Our winters usually bottom out at about 15 degrees but not long, sometimes 0 F like it was this year. Not too common. But the flies go dormant in cold weather. I plucked one off my shirt a couple of days ago that flew in my open kitchen window, so they're active already with nights still hitting the 30's. And I don't raise them yet myself. So I'm still pretty dumb about it myself and getting ready to snatch a few and start a bin. I actually had some of them get into a worm bin I had a couple of years ago and didn't see them until they come crawling out and freaked me out, like what the heck are these freaking aliens!! lol

Dewey! Love your spirit! But here's an idea for you. You already have an enclosure, but how about putting a cheap screen inside of the enclosure, on top of the chicken wire? Would keep the soldier flies contained close to your bin and keep house flies out (at least better because than chicken wire alone). Otherwise, I think you're gonna be ok with your bin. I found that it works for me. Just an idea! I do the soldier fly thing for fish food for aquaponics. I live in the city and don't have enough space for chickens. I do take the "compost" and put it in my worm bin (for my tower gardens, in season), but you have to let it dry out a bit. They usually like it a bit wetter than worms prefer.

Only caveat I see, is, if you have to bring them inside in the winter or risk them 'dying', then how can we maximize efficiencies here? Maybe, for native species rehabilitation, raise the three dung beetle species, with bsf as your 'understory' of 'farmed' sub species (along with mealworms, red wigglers, crickets, etc.), where, the word, "farmed", means, permaculture-managed breeding program. I'm building the infrastructure now, in one of the Foothills of Southern California (maybe not with crickets, just yet). Thanks for the inspiration to press forward.

Here is my advice for raising Black Soldier Flies and for doing everything else in life. First, watch some videos and do some reading. Second, obtain the stuff needed to do it. Third, observe what you now have. Fourth, re-watch the videos and re-read what you've read. Lastly, along the way, you will reach different processes and it is helpful to re-watch and re-read guides as you get to each new process. . Don't rely on your memory to remember everything perfectly. By reviewing everything right before or while you experience a new task, you will understand the information better. . That's just what I have found is helpful when I start a new hobby that I know nothing about, which has several processes/stages/complexities.
