@@slimmike56 If the ratings were done and awards handed out without politics and other non hip hop nonsense I'd actually want Black Thought and Danger Mouse to pick the winner I think. Have Kool G Rap there to do a tie breaker if it needs to happen. Can't think of three people I would trust to hold the integrity of hip hop before themselves when picking the winner if it came to be that way. Hip Hop needs to be a friendly competition to thrive and prosper and I think it would be a good way to integrate the OG's with the new artists if everyone was cool with doing things like that.

Great interview! Y'all gave both artists the right questions to explore their own process and influences in making the album. I'm especially grateful for the last question to Danger Mouse about drum artists. I'll have to check out the first 2 but as a Tame Impala fan, when he said Kevin Parker, my ears lit up. Danger Mouse will continue to collaborate with great artists like Black Thought and that sort of list is a testament to his love of sound and music and rhythm.

INCREDIBLE album. The instrumental in The Darkest Part resonates so much with me, I tear up listening to it. The music literally makes me cry. Not that it sounds sad, I can’t explain it. A lot of his beats have that effect on me. Like a lot of Kanye’s did. It’s like every emotion possible happening at the same time. Beautiful emotional confusion. It’s what I always hope to find in a project. It’s super rare but damn…Danger Mouse is special. Thought is too. He’s been my favorite MC for a long time. I truly appreciate this album. It’ll stick with me forever. I wonder if artists know just how much certain people get from what they create.

I drove down to Philly from ny to see the roots play with tribe at the electric factory Probably the best concerts I’ve seen I was the first person to exit the end of the show I walked out and black thought was standing by himself as the crowd just started moving he stood still and absorbed the energy of everyone being blown away by what they just experienced It was surreal like Christopher Reeves being outside after superman the movie ends And blend in with the crowd and not as people recognize him I did not wait to see what encounters now But I tried to shake his hand unsuccessfully I was pissed I wanted to thank him He just stared thru me Oh well who am I just a fan I later saw the roots play as far north as the Adirondacks I think it was at a college show in an auditorium I felt animosity but still couldn’t refuse the art the smooth crazy flow, rahzel, the hip hop 101, the hub on bass the keys, the illest drum sessions Wholly cow it’s a hit, Phil rizzuto, anyway I was young thought I got dizzed by an idol Hey I got the story He remains to be possible best mc ever the freestyle on flex That upstate show black thought said this is the furthest north we ever been Jimmy Fallon also came up there he played at my college and we went out drinking with him at a bar and he pulled the cord on the jukebox because he didn’t like kid rock which was playing Jimmy Fallon was still under radar most the college kids did not know him Both very different experience still the roots- best song Clones

Incredible album, love the distorted production from Danger Mouse, mixed in with that dusty basement type style of production with a Vinyl type sound on the ears, also mixed in with charming and warm soul samples, Black Thought just rapping ferociously and displaying a real spiritual and deep minded style of lyricism, the way the album opens up is perfect, it has a sort of triumphant and turned all the way up Soul sample on the track "Sometimes" , just under 40 minutes of great music, one for the culture it feels like, with Black Thought dismissing a tour, just simply leaving it to speak for itself, as great art, I think "Aquamarine" is one of the best songs of 2022 for sure, "Streams Of Thought Volume 3" was cool but weaker than volume 2 & the 1st, it leaned a little too experimental with slightly out of place hooks on some tracks, I was expecting this album to be Experimental and a little out there giving Danger Mouse's knack for doing abstract and complicated but interesting productions but he just kept it skillful, pretty traditional and well suited to Black Thought with the beats, the title track is probably the most unconventional beat on the whole thing, the tracks are placed perfectly, all the guests do their thing and don't take away from any songs, they appear on, the hooks outside of Michael Kiwanuka, from Dylan Cartlidge & Kid Sister, are really nice on the ear and engaging, beautifully done, "No Gold Teeth" "Saltwater" & "Strangers" have dark and filthy production with plucky baselines, then you get emotional and beautiful beats like "Violas and Lupitas" & "Belize" to weight it all out, possibly the more Spiritual and resilient tracks as a listener on the feel they give me personally are " The Darkest Part" & "Because" , the album has a lot of skill on display and I sense a real potency with Danger Mouse & Black Thought, enough to say a sequel or deluxe version is needed, they went with the right approach just doing 12 tracks, making People want more, " Identical Deaths" is probably the only track for me personally that sort of just rolls by without grabbing me too much but its not a song I skip, it just doesn't stand out like the rest of the tracks,, I have heard enough albums this year, to say this is a fantastic piece of work from these 2, Danger Mouse sorta is like Madlib where he doesn't really enjoy interviews or to be center of attention, he just wants to do the music and stay low key, i respect it.
@AmariMarvelous
@AmariMarvelous 2 жыл бұрын
Funny you mention Madlib in your sentiment because listening to Cheat Codes gave me that similar feeling when I first heard Madvilliany with MF Doom back in 04. Two different albums but the abstract,unorthodox production suited both DOOM and Thought on their respective albums working with abstract producers which are both engaging to listen to. Madvilliany till this day is still of the most original albums I've listen to and still light years ahead. There's been some dope rap albums that released this year but so far Cheat Codes takes the cake for me. Peace 💯

Bought the album the day it dropped. As a long-time fan of the Roots and Philly native it has been a pleasure to see BT develop and grow with the same fervor or even greater as the day their first works appeared. The "Streams of Thought" trilogy was monumental and this latest effort is nothing short of that. Danger Mouse is becoming one of my favorite producers/beatmakers PERIOD. The Mouse and the Mask was EPIC (RIP DOOM), and this body of work just adds to DM's growing legend.

I’m really trying to figure out why some of the old heads not feeling this album. Young cats, I understand. But the production alone is classic art. Then you throw Thought bars on it. Some of us just don’t wanna take the time to decipher bars from Thought. But his peers damn sure respect him, cause every guest appearance was 🔥 too. One of the greatest albums I’ve ever heard period. And that includes beyond hip hop. ✊🏿 🔥🔥

It's the awkward mixing that kinda ruins the impact of this album, I guess. You just cant take the strongest voice of the genre and make it sound so distorted.

The Black Thought solo album the real heads been waiting on.. perfect I want to see a Black Thought/Nas versus.. No 3 on my top 5 and besides Krs the only old school MC who still spits ferociously 🔥🔥

I didn't love Drill Music in Zion from what I've heard but maybe I'll give it another listen. I did enjoy Kendrick's album alot and KRS One's IMAMCRU12 album was dope as well. Those 2 along with Cheat Codes are the top 3 rap albums for me this year

Speaking of cheat codes piano in the track The Darkest Part reminds me a lot of Wu-Tangs Why Why Why from the saga continues.
