I've always wondered what mundane objects I own are actually "rare" in some niche or technical way. I own "rare" physical music, but that's only out of obscurity or intentionality, not because of any technical reason. Things like an odd stepping of a CPU or a transitional PCB revision... things that the engineer would say, "We didn't end up making that many that way."

The MotU toys came before the cartoon as well, the cartoon was made to cover a pitch they'd made to one of the toy store chains when they were launching the line, I want to say it was Toys 'R' Us.

For anyone who may he interested pretty much all of the pre-transformere Diaclone toys have been rolled inti the lore as bespoke characters. Black Tracks for example is a Decepticon named Loud Pedal

Loud Pedal even got a toy in the collector-focused high end Masterpiece line, which is pretty impressive for such a niche character. The Masterpiece line has (or had, since apparently it's ending soon) a trend of making diaclone redecos.

I won't trust my memory from 35+ years ago more than the amazing Captain KRB, but that blue and red car with the number 38 will always be Smokescreen to me. My very first Transformer toy when I was a kid, so it remained the leader of my TF crew for all of my youth. Still watching to see how this will end up in Finland...

I got to say I was never huge into transformers as a kid perhaps in part because I was never drawn to machinery in general like some boys are. However after watching PointlessHub's series about the transformers movies and now watching this about the toys I've really come to appreciate and enjoy the sheer variety and creativity that has gone into this franchise over the years. Is it strange that I find this franchise more compelling as an adult than I did as a child XD?

I played with my brothers’ first gen Transformers toys as a kid-always thought they were neat-but never collected them myself. I’ve always been a MLP collector, haha. But I looooved hearing this account of strange collectibles! I can’t identify Transformers to save my life, but I CAN identify with the feeling of “wait wAIT WHAT IS THAT” at seeing a photo of a rare toy or seeing one at an antique market or toy fair. Great stuff!

As a massive Transformers fan when I was a kid in the 80s, this is a really awesome story! :D I would likely still have a collection of Transformers toys... if my dad hadn't stupidly taken the wrong bag to the rubbish tip when we moved house.

Awesome. Diaclones in the US couldn't have been that rare. As a little kid i had two of those little square watch transformers (one black and one gold), and I also had a toy set that consisted of a bunch if different vehicles. The vehicles didn't transform, but they did combine together to form a robot, similar in concept to the second version of Voltron (as we knew them in the US). Each vehicle also came with a tiny human figure that could sit in the pilot/driver seat if the vehicles. These figure had magnets on their feet which I thought was cool. There was one in one of the clips you showed early in your video . 5:06 I grew up in several small towns in Western/ Central New York state. The only places I ever got toys were from K. B. Toystore or the toy departments of J.C. Penny or Sears . It doesn't seem likely to me that any of those vendors would strike merchandising deals that were not nationwide deals, even if they were short lived. Even at seven years old, i figured out that these little figures could fit into the pilot or driver seat of many of the G1 transformers toys . For example the original Rawhide/Ratchet model looked nothing like the cartoon/comic characters. The toy's head was the windshield of the van. The diaclone version then had a chair for the little figure to sit in, but the transformer version had a *sticker* that ypu stuck to the chair back, and it gave it a horrid little face, instead. I know this because i wore the face sticker off by putting a little figure in the face-seat too often. I don't think I could have figured out what a licensing deal was, or the subtleties of marketing to people in different cultures, but I do remember comparing the diaclone packaging to that of transformers, and wondering why the former seemed so eerie and sparse. I may have thought they were bootlegs, even if I had only a shakey idea of what that meant. One difference I did understand is that the diaclones were somewhat cheaper. Very ironic today.

there's more than just the french, the age of regional tvs was wild. there's still fragments of a translated JAKQ in italian, even if toei never licensed it to italy, altho that was more likely than not lost media even before the end of that time

​@@serPomiz A few years ago Toei put a lot of their more obscure stuff on youtube. While it only had English subtitles first two episodes, I remember the comment section were mostly people from Brazil and the Philippines nostalgic about those shows.
