The reason Baldrick gets stupider over the series is that his brain suffers so much shock from punches.

It is interesting what you can say to a General and get away with when you are an OR or even a junior Officer. See Generals spend their days with people who are not as honest with them as they should be. Generals are fighting men who can get a job done, when the time is right they like a frankness. I once saw a Lt say to a Gen “Sir you need todo what I say when I say it or you will die and that will fuck up my Career!” The General laughed and said “I am yours to command, now let’s go smash some shit.”

That,s is kind off actually how they treated the working class ordinary privet soldier in ww1 with content, watch the program the monocle mutineer and the film the hill with Sean Connery in they are an eye openers, and that what black adder go,s forth is trying to portray with Boldrick getting slapped and punch and abused by General Melchett and black adder, they really treat the ordinary soldier with content, the one,s who was badly disfigured or shell shock or brain damaged from ww1 was shot away in special homes or institutions, not homes fit for heroes but heroes fit for homes

@@slappop7082 I always thought it was meant to be Haig, but Kitchener makes sense too (though he'd have been dead just before the Somme began). Regardless, Fry's portrayal is memorable but most historians nowadays would disagree with the idea that the generals were _that_ callous. They were adapting to a new kind of warfare on a scale that nobody had experienced before in history. Politicians and historians at the time judged them incredibly harshly for their mistakes with little evidence that other strategies would have fared much better.
