Wow John! Firstly, thank you for the mentions! I don't mind at all if people do projects I also do... im just glad to inspire people! Like the Lizard before. Yeahman thems chisel lines were finicky as all get out, I've tried putting the lines in before the stem, but it crushed the pipe, I found though if you do the stem, then chisel the lines past the bottom, when you neck down the bottom they have a nice bit of flow. Hannemann Ironworks did a video and actually brought up grinding the lines in the whole pipe ahead of time and seemed to get a good result. You went all out going Jack-o-lantern with it! I wasn't gonna do that till I made one out of copper lol. Also you had me thinking here... if I made a thicker pipe gate fuller, I could get more stem! All in all, you rock John! Thank you for being you!

Really a neat idea, watched Yamez's video too! I wonder if it would be better to leave the pumpkin attached to the pipe while the finish work is completed, then cut the piece off. That way maybe you could hold it in the vise. Or maybe tack a little piece of square bar to the bottom and use that to hold it in the vise. Thanks to you and Yamez!

Thanks John, looks easy they will say, bang that up in an hour or so! Yeh, right, done some pipe type forging before and, its not that simple. That damn pipe will do everything you are trying not to do every time! Yep, time, patience and holding your tongue between your teeth at exactly the right angle at the right time is the only way to succeed! Well done and thanks for the video, I will TRY, this weekend if I get time!

I wonder if you could put the lines in the pipe before necking it? Could do it over a mandrel then. Also an idea with that left over bit that eventually broke off, rather than try and turn it in to a longer stem, if you split it you might be able to make part of it into a leaf?
@phredd60704 жыл бұрын
What about a round bar the size of the hole in the bottom chucked up in a vise. Then make the vertical lines with the fuller, at least till you get them defined.

a nice little pumpkin there! i think you could have continued to use the fuller to stretch out the stem without crushing so much, might give enough to be hung from the stem. looks great as is though
@BlackBearForge4 жыл бұрын
You would need to start with that in mind. Once there is a neck, its hard to fuller on the transition area
@bertiebassett70114 жыл бұрын
@@BlackBearForge yes, that makes sense. if you widen the neck area from the start you could bring down a section maybe 2" long to then draw it out as desired.

so what about making a larger one and using some sheet metal like thinness? would be fun to rivet the parts together but try to randomize the rivets and texture the heads so it looks like the warts you find on pumpkins sometimes. love all you do bud keep up the great content! i want to get into this craft so bad. one of the few communities i have seen that is just open and kind.

Hi again John, great video as usual. Really wish I could make videos as nice as you do. Always educational and inspiring. Over the years you've covered allot of blacksmithing things. Tools, art, useful home and garden items. A question, for a one man shop, what stock world you say is to huge to handle, and at what point is the stock to small? I'll say forging fish hooks from spring steel is very challenging.
@BlackBearForge4 жыл бұрын
I don't use anything smaller than 3/16" for the most part (rarely some 1/8" welding rod for a pin). On the large size, with a power hammer, I would say 2" square. Without a power hammer I would probably never go larger than 1"
