forge welding is one of those things in blacksmithing that seems supernatural to me its amazing!

That is the reason i think people should learn it as a basic skill. It really take the myth and mystery out of the process.

Good Morning John. Thanks for another good hook of the week. Great exercise in forge welding. Like I said on instagram it looks like a gun rack my father had in his truck in the 70's. If you made a second one, someone could hang a nice set of antique rifles from it.
@BlackBearForge4 жыл бұрын
They would probably need to be scaled up to fit

@@BlackBearForge opposing racks... larger hook on the top of one and on the bottom of the second hook-set. Two rifles hung opposite directions. The current hook size looks great for the barrel end. But, yeah, larger for the stock end.

John never fails to amaze me with his imagination and ingenuity. First time in my life I've seen a bouble bottom hook. The first forge wels lesson is a good lesson for all beginers and as he points out it's no big deal if it don'r weld so good as it will do the job. So many conatations to this kind of hook. Nice hook John. I dont comment much but look forward to and watch every installment. I like what you do and appreciate your taking time to instruct as much as inform. Love the hooks. I took two blacksmithing classes and on the second one we forge welded. My first attempt was successful. And that was an advanced class. I agree that this should be a basic skill. I might give this a go although I've never had any luck forge welding. I don't know if I'm hitting too hard or not hard enough or using the wrong kind of flux but I'm sure I'll get it one day.
@BlackBearForge4 жыл бұрын
There are lots of variables, but to much oxygen causing scale, not hot enough (or even to hot and burning) if hitting to hard it moves on itself instead of welding.

Simple yet useful. Question How do you determine when you chose simply punch a hole or to slit and drift a hole? 🙏blessed days sirSir Crawford out 🧙♂️
@BlackBearForge4 жыл бұрын
Mostly it has to do with the width of the material vs the diameter of the hole. If the hole will leave thin side wall I slit and drift.

I just finished Riveting a project. 3/4 inch mild square stock to 1 1/2 x 1/4 inch mild stock. Total thickness was 1 inch. Since the Rivet must have the size of 1 1/2 the the size of the rivet as "stick out" using a 1/4 inch rivet requires 3/8" stick out to have enough material to create the nice rivet head after using the top tool. I'd like to see instructions on Riveting as I had difficulty forming a decent rivet head using a Bucking Tool and Top Tool. I riveted 8 pieces. Many didn't form very good rivet heads. I had to heat and hammer them out to form an acceptable rivet head. I'm certain I'm doing something wrong and I've watched several KZbin DIY riveting videos. I'd be interested in seeing your instructions on how to create a good looking finished rivet head. Just a suggestion from an avid viewer and struggling Blacksmith. Thanks to you my forging is coming along vert well. My riveting however leaves allot to be desired. Thanks. Great hook video today. Best Wishes, Charlie
@BlackBearForge4 жыл бұрын
Riveting does take some practice. The 1 1/2 times rule is just a starting point, depending on the heading tools you might need more or less material
@charliebecker93914 жыл бұрын
@@BlackBearForge Thanks John. I was using the 1 1/2 rule on every rivet. Now I'll know better on my next project. I should have lengthened it a bit in order to form the desired dome shape with the heading tool I was using. Practice, practice, practice. Thank you for your response and abvice and best Wishes. Charlie

Do you have to watch out so you don't burn the metal when forge welding like can happen with a solid fuel forge when using a gas forge?
@BlackBearForge4 жыл бұрын
With a properly adjusted gas forge it isn't a problem. But there are some gas forges that will get ht enough to burn the material
