Interesting. Now the place that i used to ride by on my bike as a kid is now in KZbin. I always loved seeing those planes and sometimes I got lost in thought while I was just looking at those beautiful planes.

The looks, the sound, the history, the mystique, the way it was built, the SPEED!!!! The plane oooozes awesomeness. We will never see anything like this again. There will definitely be faster planes down the road but none with the allure of the SR-71!

Wow! Great footage of Palmdale launches. I spent 4 years at Edwards in the AF 1999-02 AGE mechanic. Glad I got to see the last SR-71 flight.

I’m proud to know my wife’s Grandfather was an architect on the XB-70 and the OV-10. And I am fortunate to work in Test&Evaluation up the road from Edwards at China Lake. It’s a beautiful relationship between Navy and Air Force in the area utilizing R2508 together doing what we do.

Thanks for the great video. Mr Flanagan is a wonderful person who is joined as a volunteer at the Blackbird Air Park. They'll be happy to share all kinds of wonderful knowledge (like how the CIA tricked the Russians into selling Titanium for the SR-71!

Indeed it is. We hope they can digitize the likely VHS tape to preserve as best quality as possible. This footage and all like it will never be recorded again, it would be a shame to lose it.

My cousin whom has passed, was the second highest Non Com at Biel AFB allowed me access to the flight line. I was really surprised to learn the footprint , pressure of the two tires on the ground of the runway, for the modern U2 is the same as the footprint for each of the twin tire footprints of the C5 Galaxy. The C5 Galaxy has several twin wheel landing struts of course, but I found that little fact quite interesting.

Edwards Flight Test Center Museum is located at Edwards AFB area so you can't go there without invitation/clearance which is very hard to get. :(

An outstanding presentation, Thank YOU for sharing. I do have a question hopefully someone can answer (not that it really matters however), Mr. Flanagan mentions the bird "leaked" fuel,, I wonder why? These engineers could design and build this amazing aircraft yet could not quite get a handle on a design for seals that would work? Wonder just how much JP7 leaked during each flight? Wouldn't they have placed a great importance on containing ALL the fuel to be used for propulsion than leaking away?
@shannonchurchill45565 жыл бұрын
Because of the amount of expansion due to the high heat generated by air friction at Mach 3, virtually everything was designed from scratch, including the fluids and sealants. The aircraft has several expansion joints in the airframe and fuel system. When it was on the ground and cool, these joints leaked. But the fuel has such a high flash point that it didn’t pose any serious fire hazards on the ground. Once up to full speed and operating temps, everything expands and swells tight. It does not leak fuel at Mach 3, only on the ground or when it has slowed to sub-Mach for aerial refueling. They took off with a low fuel load to save on tire wear, then immediately hooked up with a tanker to top off before going sonic. It did not leak a significant amount of fuel on the ground, probably only a few quarts.

24:20 the fuel deflagrates, not detonates. detonation is a supersonic deflagration, not suitable for jp-7
