I had this happen to a classmate of mine. They were doing their thing for years. But her parents found out what she was doing (her parents are very religious) and was about to put her out. The result was exactly the same. She blamed the substance (pills and alcohol) and denied knowing anything about it. Completely letting him take the fall. He's out now but still has to register as a sex offender.
