The dirty little secret is that this isn’t the _real_ Black Album. It was supposed to be songs like Thank God For Girls, Jacked Up, and I Love The USA, but with darker subject matter. But the darker lyrics went into Pacific Daydream, and work on the Black Album was pretty much abandoned when Africa became so huge. Rivers started working with Dave Sitek and became obsessed with him. Most of the lyrics were about Sitek, which is why so many songs are about drugs. He also wrote a Python script that parsed movie scripts for lines and wrote Byzantine with the singer from a random band on Twitter. When the time came to name this album, he didn’t have any ideas besides “The Dave Sitek Album,” so he settled on reusing Black. I think that’s why people hate it so much, it was _not_ what they were expecting.

@@booneh hmm that’s an interesting way to put it. If that’s the case then it kind of sounds like they were running dry of ideas within the aftermath of the white album (which could possibly explain the sudden dip in quality)

@@Garroott I think it might be too many ideas, ideas beyond the scope of the band. Rivers should have multiple side projects and be a writer/producer for pop artists, but the industry just isn’t healthy enough for it. He _has_ to make Weezer albums and do stadium tours, even when the muse takes him elsewhere. But get ready for a rebound quality-wise.

The darkness thing is part of the joke. You go in expecting it to be really dark, but it's one of their poppiest. I personally love it but if you're not into the more experimental choices then I guess c'est la vie.

Understandable reaction, people are very mixed on this, I agree it's better than Pacific Daydream at least lol. Ironically enough, the next album, Ok Human is far darker in parts than Black ever was in my opinion, I love that album, something to look forward to, I think! Black Album, is a mess, clearly went through too much versions, too many changes, what we ended up getting is a very changed, odd version of Rivers' initial idea. He'd make darker stuff than Black after Black, I think his darkest work is probably the "Autumn" EP.

Cant believe this. 😔 Besides that, Can't knock the hustle is the only song i somewhat remembered in full from the album since its release. besides that, uh, the opening to the honest song. the athletic fashion line, and the daft-punk outfit cover lol. What a just, meh album.
