Just can't get the hang of blackfish jigs. I can't figure out when to set the hook. I'm so used to my regular sinker rig. Plus I typically fish in over 65 feet of water which makes it tough to keep on the bottom.

@@JohnSkinnerFishing i see in alot of your videos that you attach your leaders with barrel swivels I was wondering what your thoughts where about tying directly to the braid? I've been using the FG-knot with much success, what do you think are the Pro's and Cons
@JohnSkinnerFishing6 жыл бұрын
It's a personal choice for me. I have more confidence going through a barrel swivel. I just don't like the idea of wrapping the thicker mono with the thin braid. I've also seen too many good anglers break those mono/braid knots.

Hello John; I've used Penn reels now for several years simply because they are locally available. Mine are the Penn Spinfisher series, mostly 3500, 4500 and V. Have you used, Penn and if so how do the Dawist Saltist reels compare. All of my fishing is done in a saltwater environment in coastal NC.
@JohnSkinnerFishing6 жыл бұрын
I'm a big fan of the Spinfishers, and they're serious reels at a very reasonable price. I have minimal experience with the saltist, but the 2500 I've been using is awesome.

Nice catch John, but you left out the key work you did to catch like that, how you located and set up on that structure! I don't care where you were, just when I kayak over a boulder or rockpile I struggle to set up on it with confidence and I'd love to see how you do it. Do you try to fish where the structure meets the floor, or further away as some sharpies advocate for the biggest fish?

I need to be right against it in this video or the fishing is slow. I use a 10-12# river or navy anchor. So I'm putting down a lot of weight to lock myself where I want to be.

I've tried them in a few spots this season. Spots where I was catching fish one after the other using green crabs. Used the peeler crab 3 inch I think in the natural peeler color. The few times I dropped them down I found fish would smack them immediately (the trademark tog thump but never the good pick up and run hit) and then they would ignore it. I always ended up switching back to real bait after a few minutes
@JohnSkinnerFishing6 жыл бұрын
I've caught tog on Gulp shrimp, but I would never go out with only Gulp for blackfish.

@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks for the input John. One more question if you don't mind; have you ever caught blackfish from the shore? I know the North Shore has a ton of rocky areas close enough to shore to cast into, but do you know if it's possible to pull fish from them?
@JohnSkinnerFishing6 жыл бұрын
My two largest blackfish, 13 and 15-plus pounds, were caught from shore. That was May 3, 1990 and and May 1, 1991 in Wading River. I used to catch them spring and fall. They were also more plentiful back then, but people still get them from the beach for sure.

I always use green crabs, never take the shell off, it becomes easier to just steal the bait off the hook or it falls off itself, on large crabs I cut legs off and cut in half as you did but with medium/small crabs I just cut legs off then cut a corner of the crab off to get the scent out
@MichaelP04186 жыл бұрын
Same here. I've gone as far as to slightly step on the shell to crack it up a bit, but that's it. Holds onto the jig/hook better in my opinion

10 pound braid would scare me tog even fluke.
@JohnSkinnerFishing6 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the spot. I wouldn't use it on a wreck.

I can totally understand now why you find that setup to be such a thrill. I took out a 7ft Tica medium power rod with 10lb braid spooled and landed some decent tog with that setup. Definitely going to change my tackle perspective a bit when fluke season comes around next year :-) Just out of curiosity.... have you attempted trying to use your Quantum baitcasting reels for something like this?
