I was excited to be tagged by my friend SurvivorMetalMan to participate in this video showing the use of an edible or medicinal plant(s). I chose to stick with one plant, Japanese Honeysuckle and discuss it's medicinal applications.

I'm trying to get rid of the honeysuckle on my property because its EXTREMELY invasive in my area, but I'm glad it has at least some use while I cant get rid of it all...

I love this plant a grew quite a large one from two twigs I broke off of a bush years ago. I am very happy to know that it is such a useful part of nature. Good luck with yours!

This is an invasive species throughout a good half of the country so probably better to plant beneficial native plants and plant those.

@@waynebrinkley934 in North America it's not at all a "useful part of nature" it's an invasive species introduced here from another continent. It's presence here is the furthest thing from "natural".

Japanese honeysuckle( is an invasive plant. Eat all you like. Fortunately, not hardy here in the higher elevations in the Finger Lakes. Often sucked the "honey" out of the flowers when I was younger downstate. My acupuncturist used it in a Chinese herbal mix at times when I was ill. Definitely cooling. Very informative Matt.

Thank you so much for tuning in Lewis! I appreciate you sharing that and as kids (and adults) we have always "sipped" the nectar from these delicious little flowers. It is invasive and can be very irritating to get rid of when it grows in the wrongs spot but a valuable medicinal to know as well. Take care.

I haven't found Japanese Honeysuckle growing wild nearby, but we seem to have a lot of invasive bush honeysuckle, which APPEARS similar, but the county trims it so often, I can't tell if it vines or is indeed a bush. IF it's the bush variety, can it also be used in this same fashion?

@@MsNancyH Actually Bush honeysuckle has very little nectar, I tried them decades ago. The vining Japanese honeysuckle can creep along the ground, walls, and trees. and neither of the plants fruits.seeds serve as a food source for migrations of birds and butterflies. The deer browse it when it's the only plant to eat after the deer destroy the landscape of native wildflowers and young tree seedlings.

The berries have some toxins in them that I would not eat the leaves have a little toxin too the flower is the main edible part

Lol just tried but did not eat the seed basically just put on tongue and squished then spat out so I just had juice. It's bitter but not nasty with a small hint of sweetness. Going to freeze the others I got and treat like, what you call poke berries in the States and Ink weed in New Zealand. Cheers for the video. Definitely do your research and Do not do what I did 🫡

You can dry out the flowers and make a tea later, it's pretty expensive to buy honeysuckle tea online or at the Chinese herbal store. (Search honeysuckle on Amazon).

Where I live in the northeast USA its everywhere. Try any public park or piece of publicly accessible land that's been allowed to become overgrown. Its considered invasive in many areas so I doubt most places will care if you harvest the flowers
