Sitting in the door, feet resting on the skids. Your at 1000 feet AGL and you know in 40 seconds you're gonna be down there. Not a good time to wonder if you left the stove on.

Thanks for the memories. These jumps were a lot of fun. I remember doing these in Okinawa Japan from 5K feet landing in the ocean and getting pick up by boat and taken back to shore where we strapped on another chute and did it again several times.

Thanks for posting this! I really miss this stuff. Never jumped a Blackhawk. In my day it was Hueys, Chinooks, C-123, C-130 and C-141. Nope, no C-5, no C-17 in those days. Best jumps I ever had were from Huey's though. No twists like I got tailgating from a C-130. Still miss it all! All The Way!

+96Delta once we jumped out of a "People Pod" on a CH-54. We use to go out to Holland DZ for Sat. fun jumps. They figured out you could run a C7-A all day for what it cost to run a shithook for an hour. So I got to do a few tailgates out of a Cariboo.

The only thing that sucks about blackhawk jumps is when you take off all the rotorwash goes into your face and it's hard to breathe for a few minutes, but other than that Blackhawk jumps are fun! Best openings ever. ^_^

"Back in the day" - oh, hell, here comes a war story! Was Wiesbaden Air Base, Germany, 1968-72. The Air Base had an Army jump school on the base. One end of their building was home to an Air Force Combat Control Team. I jumped with the Control Team at several "fly in's" and Armed Forces Day demonstrations. (got my ass chewed for a "low pull," once. Was at Rhei Main AB, as I recall.) I worked aircraft avionics but was a sport jumper. Got FREE jumps, with the Army, periodically, when some Army troops needed a qualification jump. Was out of helicopters, over the base. Dropped the Army at 1500 feet (or maybe 1200?) then the chopper made one long climbing pass, for altitude, then we Air Force Sport Jumpers got out The Army guys used to say: "You mean you don't get paid to jump?" We told them we were "ate up with jumping" and did it for fun. Lots of eye rolls, then. :) I used my old trusty Para Commander Mark II. (beat the crap out of the Army T-10's, or the Air Force's C-9 canopies. Never did jump a square chute. Nice video, thanks, B-6370 & N-6395T

You have the career I dreamed of having and never could have. If I could do it go back and get a few GOOD not BAD breaks in my life I'd do it. As it stands I got my P.T.S.D in Nursery school after being shut in a closet with no light for over an hour! I always wanted to erase those moments and challenges and join the Army. Now I'm thinking of working for you and it's the career choice I need to take. If there's anything I can do or good things I should send let me know I'm always glad to help.

Benjamin Blake Mitchner I am a paratrooper, in fact Im a jumping redleg (We drop howitzers out of planes). And I don't need anything except for my piece of shit T11 to open without a lot of twists and my 240B to not fuck up my PLF. If you are fit to go to the military, I mean fit, mentally and physically, then take careful considerations. I enlisted when I was 17 and Im 20 almost 21 now, an E4 and my hearing is fucked now, and likely my joints in the future. I cant speak for all MOS's in the Army but Combat Arms jobs like mine and the Infantry are very VERY demanding and it WILL drain you. You will have no time for shit especially in an airborne outfit. But consider your options carefully.
@SuperBenblake
@SuperBenblake 8 жыл бұрын
TheRebelGunslinger I feel bad for you hearing this. It's obviously draining and heavy, heavy stuff I knew both those things, but you illustrated it in a much more thoughtful informative manner and I know being a paratrooper means a lot of tension. I'm 40 twice your age and you really make me look like I've achieved hardly anything. One thing I can tell you is I'm a damn good self taught singer and writer and my song content is not for the faint of heart. You'd like it, but a lot of people especially people who don't like soldiers will not like it at all and if they hate soldiers, people like you, I hate those people. I hope you will feel better soon and I thank you, sir. Continue to take good care of yourself, continue to fight for what you believe in, and stay in touch. God Bless America from a patriotic citizen born and raised here.

Always loved jumping from a huey's back in the 70's. Slower canopy opening, so the longer fall was awesome. We used a metal cable doughnut secured to the deck. In this Blackhawk a nylon strap is used. My question is what is all the duct tape on the deck holding down, 3:16?
@abntemplar82
@abntemplar82 7 жыл бұрын
black hawks are faster so not so much time before opening shock. but i am right there with you. my first dozen or so helo jumps were all uh1's.
@4325air
@4325air 7 жыл бұрын
The duct tape is part of the pre-jump preparation of the helo. It covers any part of the aircraft that might catch on the jumpers' harnesses or static lines or in some way offer a safety risk. Tie-down rings in the floor, for example. Also any sharp or semi-sharp edges that might damage a static line are taped and sometimes padded. What precisely is taped ("100-mile-an-hour-tape") varies based on type of aircraft. Notice at 1:02 you will see the lower half of the rear edge of the door opening has been padded/taped, since the static lines will contact that area as the jumpers exit. Part of the jumpmaster safety check is to inspect the aircraft for any unsafe conditions--including protruding or sharp edges. "All the Way!" ex-82nd JM
@brndesk
@brndesk 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks 4325air. Seems like over kill, but apparently someone's line or gear got hung up and the duct tape drill was added to the SOP.
@geodes4762
@geodes4762 3 жыл бұрын
Some of the Hueys were set up different with the anchor cable. Have seen it mounted on the floor like you mentioned but have also seen it mounted on the transmission bulkhead about shoulder high. 100 mile an hour tape was always used to cover sharp or protruding edges so there would be no catches, cuts or scrapes of the jumper or static lines.

must have been cool to be in back then. I'm assuming that today this guy (jumpmaster? i dont know) would get an article 15 for not having his kevlar on.

Is that strap and bag that the jumpers leave behind hanging outside the helicopter long enough to go upwards into the main rotor blade?

Others have asked the same thing, so here goes: Remember that the helicopter is flying forward, with the slipstream going from front to rear. The deployment bags (which contain the parachute canopy) are not going to go up into the main rotor blades, and the yellow static lines are not long enough to allow the bags to foul the tail rotor. While the aircraft is still in forward flight, the jumpmaster pulls the lines and bags back into the aircraft. As the helo flares for landing and bleeds off the forward airspeed, the bags and lines are already stowed inside and no longer any safety factor.

I'll rephrase the same question and add part 2. If the helicopter was in an emergency descent, is that strap and bag that the jumpers leave behind hanging outside the helicopter long enough to go upwards into the main rotor blade?

SanFranciscoBay does it matter if the helo is already in an emergency decent? if the plane in in an emergency decent, there already in trouble.
@sanfranciscobay

It could be a temporary emergency descent.
