I can see so much of Anthony in Blackie. The way he talks, how he always open and the pure emotion they both shed. He has my respect. Not because he is the father of the lead singer of my favorite band, but because he wanted his son to be happy.

The voice for sure. And the face shape and eyes. The manurisms. It's truly sad. I think Blackie really started to wake up and realize before he passed away that he messed up. And I am glad they made it right before his death. And that Anthony was forgiving and helped his dad out. Anthony truly is a good guy.

He is so right about that. A parent (normal parents) will always love their child more than the child loves them and they do fall in love with their babies. Women aren't the only ones but men too. Men love their children just as much as mother's.

Whether you agree with him or not, he was a man who did the best he could with the few tools he had. A true lover of his son, despite his ups and downs. May he find some comfort in God's arms. All our love on this journey Blackie.

Yeah sometimes parents don't want to be like their strict parents. So they want to be the fun and cool parents. Where they love their kids and are afraid to discipline them and say yes to everything. Not that they are trying to purposely be toxic or bad parents. But they are afraid to say no. I feel like this is what happened with Blackie and Anthony. He was too in love with Anthony to be the parent. And instead was too much of a friend than a dad. I'm glad they were on good terms though in the end.

I think when you see the way he talks about his own father, you can see exactly why things developed the way they did. This man clearly has a lot of emotion, and obviously loves his son. He was so terrified of his own father that he was hellbent on not being him. He's damaged too, and that manifested as being a "cool dad", which unfortunately gave Anthony too much freedom. That's how it is though, the cycle of abuse perpetuates, Blackie just passed on that "abuse" in a very different way. But still, the man loved his son, and did what he felt was right in his own fucked up way, and I can't hold it against him.

Blackie Dammett is living proof of that old adage---all parents make mistakes. Whether your mom or dad is a wild rock star or the clean-cut worker who puts in eight hours at the factory to feed you, they is bound to screw up with you at some point. While I abhor the ways Blackie exposed Anthony to danger, I don't doubt for a second that he loves his son. It's the strength of that parent-child bond that matters.

Just finished reading Blackie's autobiography, Lords of the Sunset Strip (highly recommended). I had met him briefly a couple of times at music clubs back in the early '90's (Reptile House) but never really knew his bigger story. Quite fascinating, to say the least. What I can say is that he a surprisingly deep thinker, sensitive, multi-talented (poetic!) and has a sense of macro-level ethics that go beyond the ordinary. He operated back in the era when experimentalism was the order of the day. So I don't think he can be castigated too much. He's a survivor, and a true classic All-American rebel. I now see him as one of Grand Rapid's (especially the West Side's) finest sons.

Yeah, he made bad choices, but he truly loved his son with all of his being and did all he knew to do, and that's better than a lot of parents could say. I think it's way more important for parents to love their kids than to have all the perfect, "normal" environments traditionally accepted in parenting. After all, Anthony loves his dad and know his dad loves him, which is better than a relationship where the kid runs away and resents their parents forever because they were abused or neglected.

I feel Blackie didnt want to be his father...whom he despised for being too strict. So when he became a parent he allowed his son to do all the things he wanted to do as a young boy...but cudnt. But it was TOO much freedom. I think Blackie's father was like the dad in the video for "We're not gonna take it" by Twisted Sister, LOL. My Dad was like that too...lol. But i ended up pretty ok....i had a loving mother aswell, which helps.

He was probably the luckiest father alive. With his choices 9 out of 10 kids end up dead or homeless but Kiedis miraculously survived to became a superstar.

Drugs do not make for balance of emotions. As a father I learned from my fathers errors. Although I didnt realize until I was a parent, how poor mine were

Too bad some don't understand that as parents, we balance between protecting and inspiring. Personally, I think there is no wrong here. Kids are gonna do what they will and there will be as many kids lost to one type (parenting) as another. The bond of trust is the strongest of all. I have seen RHCP many times with Hillel and all. I am 2 years younger than Anothony and love my Father dearly too. I have total respect for these Men and the choices they made. Fight like a Brave!

Sad that the man Never learned to love himself. Even to this day. I know and hear self hate and pain when I see it. All of the money that anybody could ever dream of, yet none of it makes a difference. He's a good and genuine human being, but Definitely wasn't cut out to have kids, since he's still a kid himself. I would being willing to wager that the father, himself, most likely, came up with a very dysfunctional and unhealthy childhood upbringing. I'm a cocaine addict, that had a life threatening addiction, for many years, in recovery, with 7.5 years clean from cocaine, by the Grace of God. I'm also bipolar, suffering from very bad depression, being 46 years old, as a result from having used drugs for more than half of my life. I deal with suicidal ideations on a regular basis, but I'm proud to say that I've learned to love myself, a little more each day, that I haven't smoked cocaine, or snorted cocaine, in those 7.5 years of recovery. Drugs strip people of their self esteem, self worth, and self confidence. I've had to work my ass off, each and everyday, to keep those 3 essential things that I've gotten back through recovery, the 12 Steps, and God, although I'm no holy roller that preaches to people, since I can't stand being around people like that. NOBODY, AND I DO MEAN NOBODY, IS STRONGER THAN THE DISEASE OF ALCOHOLISM AND DRUG ADDICTION. THEIR STUBBORN PRIDE TELLS THEM THAT THEY ARE, WHICH KEEPS THEM FOR ASKING FOR HELP. SADLY, MANY OF THOSE PEOPLE DIE, AND FOR THE PEOPLE THAT DON'T, THEIR STUBBORN PRIDE KEEPS THEM MISERABLE EACH DAY, WHICH IS WORSE THAN DYING FROM THEIR ADDICTION. I'M GONNA PRAY FOR THIS MAN, SINCE I KNOW ON THE INSIDE, HE'S A BEAUTIFUL SOUL, THAT MEANS WELL, WITH A HEART OF GOLD. I PRAY THAT ANTHONY CONTINUES TO WATCH OVER HIS DAD, AND TAKE CARE OF HIM. I ALSO PRAY THAT THE MAN GETS PSYCHIATRIC HELP, SO HE CAN LIVE A MORE HAPPY AND HEALTHY LIFE, SINCE EVERY GOOD AND GENUINE HUMAN BEING DESERVES THAT.
