Subscribed , currently trying to figure out copperplate. Blackletter scheduled for second half of this year. Thanks for rekindling my interest and love for blackletter, the first script I tried to figure out without much guidance. I need to put my parallel pens to use, an engineering marvel . it's fun to see how different generations of graphic designers have different skills. You suffer with blackletter and for me it is organic, it was one of the types of calligraphy that I learned in college and I suffer with modern calligraphy and lettering. but in the end we both have the developed ability to learn new things from these kinds of techniques. thanks for reminding me of my roots. I started with traditional calligraphy; italic, black letter, uncial, so I have lots of pilot pens. Unlike you Becca, I am more comfortable with this style of calligraphy than I am with modern calligraphy using brush pen. I took a class fro Tamer a little over a year ago through Capital City Scribes located in Austin. His work is amazing.

I got my first set of parallels about 4 years ago on a whim in one of my fountain pen orders and I fell instantly in love with them!! When I realized they came out with 2 new sizes I was way too excited about a couple of pens LOL Its so cool to see someone using them and making a video showing an interesting way to use them thank you! Another cool thing about them is that the ink cartridges that are made for them can be switched out to create super easy, cool color blending! I recommend anyone who's into lettering to grab at least a couple of the sizes!!

I'm so happy that you found the video helpful! I was also unreasonably excited when I randomly discovered that they'd released 2 new sizes. It totally made my day and I couldn't order them fast enough. And yes! the ink blending possibilities are also amazing and it's one of my favorite techniques - you can also blend by just touching the nibs of two pens together and by dipping in other inks. I'm totally addicted to ink blending with these!

Thank you so much Andrea! Yes, blackletter is kindof an umbrella terms for these types of broad nib styles - they're also often called "gothic" styles 😃I'm really glad you found this helpful!

How funny, I started off getting into fountain pens too. I've been obsessed for almost 4 years now and finally decided to dive into this(modern calligraphy on Becca's website). I have over 30 really nice fountain pens and my husband wants to know why all of a sudden I have a zillion brush pens and am only writing in "markers" 🤣🤣😂😂🤣 also have about 30 something bottles of fountain pen ink lol I'm a monster!

So wonderful to hear from a fellow fountain pen addict 😂! Trust me heidi, you're definitely, definitely not alone 😃 The real danger is when you start getting into the vintage fountain pens which is a bug I caught as well. I have a healthy supply (or maybe an unhealthy supply? 🤔😂) of Lamy safaris and Al (it's really not fair that they keep releasing new colors) a few nicer ones and some vintage ones (I'm a sucker for a flex nib). I also have more inks than one person probably should and loved trying out different papers. The original Tomoe River is still my favorite! I'd be super interested to hear more about your collection - fountain pens are seriously too much fun!

Ok, maybe there's something wrong with me, but for some reason, blackletter seems less intimidating than the other lettering/calligraphy. Maybe it's because I don't have to worry about applying pressure for upstrokes and downstrokes? Or maybe, as I said, there's just something wrong with me! LOL Not sure if Tamer has a KZbin channel, but I'd definitely subscribe! Thanks for sharing this, Becca. :)

I totally know what you mean Artish! Usually shaking the pen a bit (I recommend putting the cap on when you shake it btw - I learned that the hard way a few times 😂) after you install a new cartridge will help the ink flow to the nib so that you can start writing. I hope this helps 😃
