At work we use Hyperdeck Studio12G to monitor test articles in a large facility. We continuously record, only playback to review if something were to go wrong with the test article. The SSDs are nice because readily available. We record in in Prores Proxy so each SSD holds up to 35 hours of 720p60. We don't need the super high res. I guess broadcast people need density like one hour 1 TB clips. I had issues of several units where the front panel buttons fail to respond. BMD repaired the units but recommend we don't stack multiple Studio12G units together (overheat issues?). Anyway I re-arranged our racks with space between units. We had issues on one project that wanted us to save clips (few minutes each) that we used DaVinci Resolve to make mp4 clips. We noticed a few times the SSD became unreadable also not able to playback. I did some searching around, it appears if doing high frequent record/stop/playback a typical SSD card will fail. This is where it is necessary to get data center quality SSD cards that cost five times more than a regular SSD card. However, I haven't been able to replicate the problem in my lab. Management reluctant to spend $10K+ on SSD cards which I can't say will avoid this problem (which we haven't experienced lately). It seems BMD is the only manufacturer that has a recorder in this form factor and uses SSD cards, it is perfect for our setup (and far cry from what we used before that was continously recording on VHS). We have several Studio12G, I will see if we can purchase more from stores that still carry this unit so our stock is same units for commonality. We don't need 4K.

Hey Doug, your videos are the best. I was wondering if you were familiar with the Hyperdecks and their effect on the Tally and CCU. I have two BMPCC 4Ks passing through two Hyperdeck Studio HD Plus' then into my ATEM Mini Extreme ISO. Once the cameras are connected to the hyperdecks and then hyperdecks to ANY channel on my ATEM, my control and tally signal from channel 1 both get sent to whatever channel my Hyperdecks are on. Very frustrating on set, and seems like there should be a simple way to tell the Hyperdecks which channel they should correspond to. The issue happens whether plugged into the SDI of the Hyperdeck with converters, or directly into HDMI. BMD Support has left me hanging.

Hi Doug, Love your detailed walkthrough! Just ordered a Hyperdeck HD Mini (the new smallest model) and tried to figure out what SD card media to purchase for it.. I’ve seen the very short list of “supported” card brands/models on BMD’s website, but i assume it’s possible to use other brands like Lexar, Sandisk etc., as long as they are UHS-II and fast read/write speeds. What cards do you use for recording on your HyperDecks? (ps. I can’t even source those BMD mentioned sd card brands here in Denmark 😅)

I'm in the planning stages of a video specifically about which cards to use. But, short answer, consult my SD card database at djp.li/cardperf and select any card with write speeds over about 50 MB/sec (for HD).

Hi Doug, I noticed you didn't mention anything about the ability to playback mp4 files from a computer or other source that is NOT formatted to hyperdeck strict settings. Grant had mentioned during this series launch that the 4K Pro model had the ability to accommodate this and that the feature would be added to some of the other models at some time. Any word about this on your end? Thanks.

Hi Doug - I was wondering if you could help me. I've reached out on the forum and to BM but can't get the exact answers I need. I’m looking into the Hyperdeck HD Plus and I’m trying to figure out the behaviours of the unit before buying. When you press the play button once (I’ve figure that you can press for loop clip and loop all clips), what does the unit do when it reaches the end of the clip? Does it hold the last frame, go black, or go onto the next clip? From what I'm understanding, I think that when it gets to the end of the clip, it moves onto the next clip automatically? For some further info, I am looking to do a key/fill animation across a number of clips. I want the behaviour to be play first animation and then hold on the last frame of the first clip. Then I want to be able to play the next clip which will show the next bit of the animation when triggered - and so on. This also brings me to the next question - if you can do this, can the Hyderdeck do it such that it doesn’t drop a frame (eg I don’t want the animation to flash as the unit transitions between clips) Some further thoughts - I could potentially trigger this from an Atem Mini ISO Extreme (I understand that does hold last frame) - or use companion (or a mixture of both) - but don’t see any configurable items for holding frame in the companion plugin. I’m aware that you can do a command line play and hold - but I don’t want to be driving this from the command line - but do realise that I can change the behaviour of the unit by calling - play option: stop mode: {lastframe/nextframe/black} - what I dont know, is if this is only when using remote control, or whether it impacts the buttons on the front also (I'm guessing it doesnt). And even if i put the stop mode as lastframe, I think that I can trigger everything OK as I need - but I still don't know if it will be seamless as I switch between clips. The BM docs really are pretty poor on this front - and as somebody that has the devices, I wonder if you could provide any input to these behaviours? There's certainly nothing on KZbin that I've found that calls all this sort of stuff out?! Really appreciate any help that you could offer up on this front. Thanks.
@RussHollinshead2 жыл бұрын
Should also mention - looking at the older Hyperdeck Studio Mini (so I can get the key/fill functionality) - I think I'm out of luck on the last frame functionality is not quoted in the manual (the play option: stop mode: {lastframe/nextframe/black} bit) - although I'm not aware if there are any firmware updates that have put this functionality in...?
@djp_video2 жыл бұрын
On all of the HyperDeck Studio models, if you only rely on front panel control you only have three options -- play all clips, repeat one clip, or repeat all clips. There is no mode to play a single clip and stop/hold. If you control from ATEM Software Control, there is a mode to play a single clip. In this mode it does hold on the last frame. I believe it uses the playlist(timeline) feature of the HyperDeck through its API.
@RussHollinshead2 жыл бұрын
@@djp_video Brilliant, thanks for getting back to me Doug - and I dont suppose you could tell me if you are using the Atem, if you have played a clip and its currently holding, if you trigger another clip, does it do so without any frames inbetween? This is the biggie that I can't seem to get an answer on? So for example, if you have the exact same frame at the end of the first clip as at the start of the second clip, do you see a gap between the two clips or are they seamless? Sorry to ask, I just dont know where else I can get this answer!

It's seamless in that it doesn't add video frames from any other sources (no black frames, for example), but there is a slight delay when changing clips that way.

We have 2 HyperDeck Pro 4Ks and I can't figure out how to get them to run in 60fps. They each have a 4K 60fps PTZ camera going into them, out to a 4K Constellation that is set to 60gps. I did find a 2160p60 option in the menu, but the display still shows 30fps. Official listings online say it caps at 30fps, which feels ridiculous at that price these days. I'm surprised you didn't mention the Studio 4K, which lists 60fps support quite clearly. Maybe I'm just missing something.
@djp_video3 ай бұрын
I did cover it in this video. The 4K Pro can record 4K at up to 60fps. The HD Pro, on the other hand, is limited to 30 fps in 4K. You don't need to do anything on the HyperDeck to enable 4K60 recording; HyperDecks will just record whatever signal format is being sent to them. If your HyperDeck is showing 4K29.97, that's the signal that it is receiving and you'll need to look at the settings for your cameras.

Hey Dough, great explanation! I would love if you could address a few extra points in a follow-up video on how to build a recording rack for ISOs: 1) How to master/slave separate units with Timecode, Genlock & RS422. 2) How to trigger the ISO recording through the ATEM Software Control. (Is all the cabeling still required if the AUX-Outs are used?) 3) How to offload the files with FTP to a NAS System.
@djp_video2 жыл бұрын
If I'm being honest, I probably won't be doing a video about those things. But I can give you a little info. 1. If you haven't already, watch my video on timecode and genlock as a starting point. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4bRaaCDhpV9fck RS422 is used to control the decks (sending commands to play, stop, record, fast forward, rewind, etc.) Essentially to sync multiple decks you have to connect all three connections from one unit to the next. 2. As far as I know the record trigger isn't sent on the Aux outputs. So you'd want to connect multiple units using RS422 and then start recording on the master unit, which would then trigger the rest. In most cases, timecode data would come as part of the SDI signal from the Aux output of the switcher, except for a handful of ATEM models that don't output timecode. 3. Pick an FTP transfer program of your choice. I use Filezilla most of the time.

Hello Doug, Is there possible to make a macro (with the atem software control) to make a slowmotion replay of a defined duration (the last 10 seconds, for example) with a Hyperdeck shuttle HD? some things work, but I run into several problems: selecting the last clip recorded, setting playback to slow speed and finally rewinding the last 10 seconds of the last clip. thank you
@djp_video9 ай бұрын
It might be possible, though it's going to be tricky, and may not yield the results you're hoping for. Macros are pretty limited in their capabilities, and the recording feature is even more limited. You may want to consider editing the code that makes up the macros manually to get you closer to the behavior you want. There are a lot of videos on KZbin on how to edit a macro, but the basic idea is that you save your configuration in ATEM Software Control, and then open the .xml file in a text editor like Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code. The macros will be in a section called and can be edited to tweak to the desired behavior. Playback speed is one of the parameters that can be set on the HyperDeck playback command. The tricky part will likely be finding a command (or combination thereof) that will select the end of the last clip, and then back up exactly 10 seconds. Once you've finished making changes to the macro, open the .xml file in ATEM Software Control again to load them into the switcher. What you ultimately need for this to work consistently is software which has some intelligence and can query the deck for the number of clips, length of each clip, and then issue the proper commands to jump to the exact right point for playback and issue the proper playback command. It wouldn't be hard to write, as the protocol for controlling the HyperDeck is pretty simple and is well documented. The only tricky part about coding something like that is developing the state machine to make sure communication with the HyperDeck is reliable. There is at least one piece of software out there that attempts to allow you to use HyperDecks for slow motion replay. I forget the name, but it has been attempted. It might turn up with a little searching. Ultimately you might consider going with a purpose-built solution. vMix has a replay feature available (and that's what I use) and it's available fairly inexpensively for about $50/month or $1200 for a perpetual license. You can easily cover the cost of that with what you're charging your client for replay. You just need a half-way decent PC with a dedicated GPU and capture card to make it work. datavideo also makes a replay device which is fairly affordable as well (though it is very limited in its playback length). There's also Vizrt 3Play, but I haven't heard many good things about that one. The two big issues with the HyperDeck in this application is that it can't play and record at the same time so anything that happens while you're playing back is going to be lost (which might not be a deal breaker depending on what you're shooting), and it's fairly slow to switch between recording and playback modes, so it will likely never give you instant playback. In addition to being able to record and play simultaneously, one more nice thing about a dedicated replay solution is that you can usually use them to create isolated recordings as well, as they do record for the entire duration of an event without interruption. And most of them can synchronize playback of multiple recordings, giving you the option of switching angles from multiple cameras or watching the same event from multiple angles back-to-back. Replay systems also usually make it easy to adjust the start and end points of each replay clip so you don't end up with a lot of dead air waiting for the right part of the clip to start, especially when playing back at slow speeds... a 10 second clip playing back at 33% is 30 seconds, which when you're waiting to play back a highlight feels like an eternity. The better replay systems also give you a way to assemble a highlight reel as you go... as you find interesting things happening, you add them to a playback queue during an event. They also make it easy to mark clips so you can tell at a glance what they are, which is pretty important when you've got dozesns or hundreds to manage. Whenever I've been hired to run replay, there's just an expectation that they'll be handed a highlight reel at the end of the event, if not have highlight reels ready to go for sponsor breaks and the end of the broadcast, so having a purpose-built solution is a requirement. This would be next to impossible to do with a HyperDeck. I understand the appeal of using a HyperDeck for replay. They're pretty inexpensive for what they do. At one point I was considering going that direction. But they don't come without a lot of limitations for that application, and there are other alternatives out there that are better suited and don't cost much more.

@@djp_video Good evening Doug, thank you for your prompt reply. Doug, if I create some ProRes 422 videos (pre show, intermission, etc) and also some 4444 videos (a clock overlay to be used as a fight timer), will a typical Hyperdeck be able to see them all? You've mentioned (and I've found myself) that the HDs are indeed quite picky about having different formats present. I finally upgraded to a larger switcher where I can afford to burn another input on proper key/fill videos and realized this may be an issue as I started rendering my fight clocks and sponsor tickers in 4444. TIA
@djp_video Жыл бұрын
If they're all of the same video format (resolution and frame rate) you can mix ProRes 4:4:4:4 and 4:2:2 on the same card. But I've found it more convenient to render everything with the Alpha channel, so even the video files without a proper alpha channel are shown properly when utilizing the Fill/Key functionality of the switcher. When the HyperDeck plays a 4:2:2 file, the B output is a mirror of the A output -- they both provide the same video. But whenever an alpha channel is present in a 4:4:4:4 file, the B output switches to Key. So if you have a mix of both formats on the same card, the B output will switch between video and key depending on which file you're playing.
@ChiefNonsense Жыл бұрын
@@djp_video Man that's a great fix. Good thought process to avoid unintended slip-ups. If I'm already burning storage space on ProRes file sizes, it makes no difference to just make them all 4444. I've hardly touched it since this video. The lack of a screen for configuration is really inconvenient. Also, I almost always use switchers with SDI connections, and it's also very inconvenient to find and setup SDI HDMI converters to connect this. For someone using HDMI switcher, and the luxury of previewing the output at full resolution before it goes live, this unit can be fine. Or if you need a teleprompter, it can do okay. But there are better solutions for most everything that it can do.

I'd recommend you go with the HD Plus if video playback is your priority. It has the separate A/B outputs for fill/key, at up to 1080p60. The HyperDecks don't really make for a good Replay solution, since they can't record and play at the same time.

@@djp_video hmmm, how would you suggest the replay? I figured that the hyperdeck would still record, and if we'd want to show a replay, we could play it back using the ⏪ button? Would you suggest multiple hyperdecks?
@djp_video3 ай бұрын
I wouldn't suggest HyperDecks for replay at all. You can't just rewind on them. You have to stop the recording, which will put you at the beginning of the last clip recorded. You'd then have to fast forward to the part of the video you want to play. There isn't a quick way to do that. And then you have to stop it, press Record twice to restart recording. Someone could create some software to make some of that more convenient, but even with an ideal software solution it's still going to be rather awkward. I use vMix for replay. Not only is it more flexible, but by the time you get all of the gear you'd need for multiple cameras, it might be as cheap or even cheaper than using HyperDecks. The other option which has become available in the recent past is using DaVinci Resolve.

@djp_video7 ай бұрын
All of the Studio models have RS422 remote control inputs, and all but the Mini have RS422 outputs. That gives you a way to synchronize transport controls. From here, I'll go over one way to use that, but it certainly isn't the only one. For any approach you might take, you'll want a common sync reference to make sure the decks stay in sync with one another. If you have a separate genlock source you can use it, but otherwise you can take the Reference Out of your first deck and connect it to the Reference Input of deck 2, and then repeat from the 2nd to the 3rd. In the menu for decks 2, 3, etc. set the Reference Source to Auto or External. Deck 1 can be set to Internal if you'd like but it isn't required. Back to RS422... get yourself some straight-through DB9 male-to-male cables, like amzn.to/4bmDwBU. Connect the Remote Out of deck 1 to the Remote In of deck 2, then Remote Out of deck 2 to deck 3, etc. This synchronizes the transport controls so that when you press play or record or stop on the first deck that all of the others follow suit. That will get you close. There are no guarantees that the decks will stay frame accurate though. There's nothing in these connections telling the slave decks to follow/go to a specific timecode position so if one decides to glitch and pause briefly at any point it will drift from the others. Using a piece of software to start playback via Ethernet commands might also be an option, but you'd want to use software specifically designed for that purpose. Both ATEM macros and BitFocus Companion, for example, offer control over HyperDecks, but those commands would be issued back-to-back rather than simultaneously so there's no guarantee that the last deck being controlled starts at the same time as the first deck. And even with software control you'd still need the Reference sources to be the same.

@@djp_video Thanks Doug for such a quick response. It’s greatly appreciated, I am currently using a Stream Deck to run three of them, and haven’t had an issue with the Hyperdecks staying in sync, but a few frames wouldn’t really be noticeable for my purposes. I also tried MixEffect on an iPad which worked well with shortcuts, but I don’t like having to look down at the touch screen while switching at the same time. Is there a hardware controller that you can recommend? One that doesn’t have to run through a computer and software would be preferable, such as X-Keys and Central Control, which I’ve also used. In one of your previous videos you mentioned that you can’t use your X-Keys with a latest version of switcher or software, but I can’t remember which you referred to. I saw a video with Central Control at the latest show where they were talking about a module that can be programmed and then stays with the control surface, so you don’t have to run it through a computer anymore. Do you know much about that? That’s a whole video in itself 😉

When I change the file format (through tcp command from Terminal), the hyperdeck studio HD plus changes the video format as well. If the disk is empty it takes the input video format (selected INPUT) and when there are clips of the new file format on the active disk it takes the video format of the first video it finds, based on sorted on video format. (Not on the order of the disk list, not in order of create timestamp). At least this is what I think what is being done. Can you confirm??
@djp_video Жыл бұрын
If you do change the active format through the terminal interface it will list the video files it finds in that particular format. The reason I explain things the way that I do in this video is that most people (I'd guess 99%) never touch the terminal interface and have no desire to do so... so effectively whatever file format the HyperDeck finds first in the directory listing is the format it uses when powered on or when media is connected/inserted. I do not know what sorting is done before it opens a file to determine its format, if any -- I've never taken the time to test and research that.

Have Blackmagic design added the capability yet to be able to switch recording media? Instead of physically removing an SSD or XD card? Also their 12G model can't play back files other than those recorded on the Hyperdeck. Agree with earlier posts that BMD documentation is pretty poor with regard to their features and functions.

On the HyperDeck Studio 4k Pro, is there a setting to trigger timecode output when the REC button is pushed? I'm hoping to trigger a Zoom F8 with start/stop.
@djp_video Жыл бұрын
Timecode is always output as long as it exists. There are a couple sources for timecode within the device -- the SDI input, or an internal source. So as long as one of those is active and valid the HyperDeck will output timecode.

One recorder per camera. Or record locally on the camera.

Is it still possible to run the stinger with alpha channel that you laid out in your video with the new hyper deck studio HD? Or does the lack of two SDI outputs cause an issue?
@djp_video2 жыл бұрын
You have to have two separate outputs. The lowest-end model in Blackmagic's lineup that can do this today is the HyperDeck Studio HD Plus.

I mis-spoke. I was thinking of their Analog-to-SDI Mini Converters, which will do composite, component, or S-Video.

@@djp_video If I used that converter with the Hyperdeck, would it separate colors appropriately or is it adding unnecessary equipment?

Are you needing an S-Video output? If so the SDI-to-Analog converter would do that for you. And that's about as simple of a setup as you can get.

Hi Doug, is possible use HyperDeck Studio Mini as video player trigerred by Time code or MIDI? I need someting to play multiple videos in sync with ligtning and sound on live concerts. Whole show runs on Time code and MIDI but i use DAW Reaper to playback videos for now. Since I dosnt trust my PC, I need some more profesional solution.
@djp_video2 жыл бұрын
Of course the HyperDeck by itself doesn't have a MIDI connection, but with software you could put something together. Central Control (centralcontrol.io) supports MIDI messages and can talk to ATEM switchers, and ATEM switchers can start and stop playback of HyperDecks, so you could do something with that. Additionally, JustMacros (justmacros.tv) supports MIDI and HyperDecks so you could write some code to control the HyperDeck there as well. Those are only two ideas. I'm sure the community could come up with any number of other ways to accomplish the same thing.

Very nice content. Do you have any experience with the BM Hyperdeck shuttle HD? I want to invest in hardware with the sole pupose of playing back video's in my livestream via my Atem extreme. Is the shuttle any good?
@djp_video Жыл бұрын
The Shuttle HD will work well for that if you control it through ATEM Software Control or another similar piece of software. The lack of screen makes it more challenging to select which clips to play than other HyperDecks, but with an additional controller which can show you which clip is selected it can work well.

How do you connect a 4pin yc video cable to the hyperdeck studio pro
@djp_video7 ай бұрын
The 4-pin YC is also known as S-Video, which is standard definition analog video. I believe you're asking about the HyperDeck Studio Pro 2. It doesn't have a YC compatible input directly. So you'll need to go through a device to convert it to SDI first. The Analog-to-SDI Mini Converter from Blackmagic Design, amzn.to/3K0qL3Z, will do that for you. But you'll also need a cable, amzn.to/3yobur1, to separate the Y and C signals for the converter as well. You'll connect the Y output of the cable to the "B-Y or S-VIDEO Y" input of the converter, and the C output to the "R-Y or S-VIDEO C" input of the converter. You can then take the SDI output of the converter and connect it to the SDI In on the HyperDeck. The switches of the converter need to be set with switches 1, 6,7, and 8 OFF and switch 4 ON to tell it that you're sending it YC video.

Hi Doug, when I press rec on hyperdeck, timecode is set to a random # and it difficult the editing process with notes. how do I reset timecode to zero for recording?
@djp_video Жыл бұрын
That would be the timecode from the connected source. For example, if you're recording the output of an ATEM switcher, that's the internal timecode for the switcher. If you have a more recent model of HyperDeck you can change the timecode source in the menus so it uses an internal counter rather than the timecode from the video source.

Hi I am new to all of this and cannot seem to get an answer as to "can any of these record an IP stream from PTZcam". Everything on youtube is high level stuff but no answer to what seems to be a simple "does it or doesn't it and if so how?" and if it doesn't "what does?" lol - thanks for your videos, I hope you can help
@djp_video10 ай бұрын
These would not do that. They expect an SDI video source, or on the Plus/Pro models, from HDMI. Do you happen to know what format your PTZcam is generating? That will dictate what devices are able to talk to it.

@@djp_video Thank you for responding, the formats listed are 1080p, 1080i, HDMI, NDI. I'm currently capturing my ptzs through Vmix using the multicam recorder but would like a bit of safety/redundancy. I have camcorders that record my full feed and act as backups but these ptzs are just out there on an island and "if" the laptop glitches the footage could be glitched as well. Again thanks for responding I hope you can help👍🏾

Tell me how to implement instant replay functions with atem extreme iso ? Can you tell me any options?
@djp_video2 жыл бұрын
You'll need equipment made for that purpose. I believe the best budget-friendly option is vMix software with a Blackmagic Decklink 8K Pro card and a computer powerful enough to run it. There are hardware-only options but they're going to be much more expensive.

The shuttle looks like it would work best for instant replays
@djp_video Жыл бұрын
It's missing one key capability that is a must with instant replay -- the ability to play and record at the same time... so while you're searching for a clip, or playing it back, it continues to record in the background. None of the HyperDecks can do that. The other thing this lacks is an easy ability to change playback speed. Instant replay is very often played back at slow speed ("Slo-mo"), and while the Shuttle can play back slowly, navigating the interface to do it is slow and tedious.

Hello Dough, i am relatively new in all this and i would like to know how can i record audio during an event in the hyperdeck studio HD Pro recorder? I want to buy it but there are no xlr inputs, and is it possible to record h265 to an external drive. Could you help? Thanks. Leo
@djp_video11 ай бұрын
In most cases we're injecting the audio into a video switcher upstream of the HyperDeck, so it's already embedded in the SDI input feed. But in case you need to replace it with something else, you can use the Blackmagic Audio to SDI converter which will embed up to 4 analog channels or 8 AES/EBU channels into the SDI feed. If you're recording in 4K on one of the Plus or Pro models you can record in h.265. h.265 isn't supported for HD.
