I just picked up one of these to try out at one of our venues! Curious if when you use load balancing and a VPN if you can do a pseudo SD-WAN configuration. e.g. connect to multiple WAN sources and have a higher total bandwidth throughput. Obviously assuming that your ISP connection at the VPN server is fast enough.

It would work, but I don't know that I'd want to deal with having extra cables and an extra converter that needs to be connected and powered, and the possible unreliability of HDMI.

Worth noting that the Teranex with the current firmware has a latency setting which can be set to „lowest latency“ instead of „highest quality“ which should put it on par with the decimator regarding latency

The Decimator gets actually pretty blurry vertically when converting from progressive to interlaced (like 1080p -> 1080i) while the Teranex does this conversion without any loss of detail.

Hello Doug, and Happy New Year! 🎊 It’s funny because “ye olde blackmagic setup 100k views video” just popped in my recommendations, while I’ve been quite away from video topics and gigs for about a year, focusing on my software day job. I thought I might as well see what you’re up to on your channel, and here I am. :) I noticed the signs of a recession coming in markets, for software projects and in general, the whole economy is shifting right now. If I may suggest ideas for “R&D” in your (possible) found time: video content authentication systems, communication resilience systems and practices, planning for signal degradation and failovers. Kinda HAM radio but for video. Natural, social, and cybersecurity events may increase the need for applications of such domains. Anyway, I wish you find success in your projects and stay healthy! 🙏

Thanks for your video Doug! I wondering if the camera could power the unit via a USC-C to C cable? Also, I guess there is only one camera at a time that can connect wirelessly? (only one transmitter). I would like to see a smaller unit but it would be tough to decide what functions to keep!
@djp_video

The controller is powered via the LANC connection. The battery or separate power supply is only needed when using the wireless transmission function. And yes, only one camera can be connected wirelessly at a time.

For anyone considering a thumb remote controller for zoom and record… Look at the cheapest Vari zoom for $123 at B&H. adorama would have it too. There’s no bells and whistles. Just a record button and a thumb rocker. I’ve had all the vari Zoom controllers and all my cameras over the years and been happy. it does all the variable speeds that the camera does which is pretty incredible. I’ve never had a camera that zoomed as slow as a Z 200. This little cheap remote controller works perfectly. I don’t think the button control that he’s talking about is very practical in the real world but I see his point. To each his own.
@djp_video
@djp_video 6 күн бұрын
The button controller is still my favorite. I've had way too many shots get messed up because the camera operator couldn't maintain a constant speed with the rocker style. If LANC supported hundreds of zoom speeds it wouldn't be an issue. But with only 7 speeds, it's much too easy to have the rocker alternate back and forth between two of them, resulting in a very jumpy zoom move.

Discovering you and your channel has been an absolute game-changer for me as I head back into the world of teaching television production using the latest digital equipment and techniques that I've had to come to grips with to replace my 40 years of analogue knowledge and experience. You are an incredible teacher and mentor with a style that makes us all feel comfortable and safe in the learning environment. The software development industry's loss is definitely the video industry's gain - although I can entirely understand about the financial hit that you're experiencing. Hopefully you can again achieve a balance between careers that enables you to continue to provide expert and easily understandable instruction on equipment and processes for those who desperately need it (Me!!). All the very best for the future, kind regards, Wayne Murray.

Great tips, thanks! Is it possible to save and recall the power zoom settings using ATEM software control, or is that something they require a control surface for? Would be handy to recall zoom level presets (and gain) via Streamdeck...
@djp_video
@djp_video 12 күн бұрын
I don't think zoom position is something that you could do presets for. The ATEM control protocol only has 'zoom in' and 'zoom out' commands -- no 'go to zoom position z' command. And, in addition, there's no way for the camera to report back the zoom position, even if the lens does happen to have a way to report that.

@@djp_video Thanks for confirming. I was going to use the zoom on a Micro G2 cam, but the lack of parfocal lenses at a reasonable price has be going back to a Sony a6500 with a PZ lens and AF. I am just going to set my focal length then use force mobile on a DJI app to control a RS-C gimbal for pan and tilt. Works really well when adjusted right. I can always switch to the game controller mode to use the paddles for zoom, then go back to force mobile for panning and tilting the cam on a fluid head tripod on my desk. Middle Things has a nice solution at a price, but at that point I might just use a good Canon PTZ cam, but I don't want to go that route until I am running everything via NDI. In my mind it's better to have the better optics and bigger sensor on the Sony.

Great ! I watch many VLAN video ; only you can state very clear and have config 3 brand switch for example. it make me more understand with VLAN. But I still have a stupid question. If set the port to "Trunk" port. is it still need inside every VLAN Tag the cascade port ( does trunk will auto add Tag before all packet ) ? many thanks.
@djp_video
@djp_video 16 күн бұрын
Setting to Trunk does not tell the switch which VLAN IDs to include for outgoing traffic. You still have to specify the rules (Untagged, Tagged, Excluded) for each VLAN on a Trunk port. The tag is retained on outgoing frames (packets) when it is set to Tagged for a given VLAN, or removed if it is set to Untagged. Normally for trunk ports all of your relevant VLANs would be set to Tagged, but there are exceptions. If you haven't seen my first video on VLANs, it explains it a little bit better than this one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWmUoayHlq-aoJo

Thanks for making this video, very informative. I have loads of old NP-F batteries from over the years that are really unreliable - and lots of chargers that are awful too. For some reason the NP-F battery market seems to be flooded with low quality garbage. I feel like I should buy a tester like yours and see if any of my batteries are salvageable, but most likely they all need throwing out. In fact, I’m already in the process of moving all of my gear to v-locks, since it’s a more reliable and professional standard. But those Smallrig batteries in particular are making me wonder if it’s worth giving NP-F another go, especially since they can charge over USB-C, taking the dodgy charger issue out of the equation. (I have some Smallrig v-locks and really like them.)
