Blackmagic Proxy Generator DaVinci Resolve 18 Tutorial

Hey Justin, maybe you can help me: My Sony camera already creates proxies automatically. The original is e.g. C1234.mp4. Proxy is: C1234S03.mp4. Is there a script, a button, a function, a solution to tell Davinci to connect all files automatically? Otherwise I have to click through sooo many clips one by one.

In the folder the videos are located you can make a folder called Proxy and put the proxies in the folder. the proxy and the camera originals should have the same name.

@@JayAreTV thank you so much! And there's another, more simple way. Just select all the clips, right click, relink..., choose folder, davinci does the work. This was tooooo simple 🤷😂

Dumb question but I'm assuming when you export it uses the camera originals? In other words, does it export from the highest quality file available.

Yes, it will always use camera originals. If you somehow end up missing one or multiple camera originals there's an option on the deliver page to use proxies where the originals are missing.

Strange codec options. H264/5 normally is not for editing. It's to cpu intensive. When I use proxyfiles those are bigger but much less cpu intensive to work with. Seems this is another use case. Are the other codecs still available for proxy? DNxHD/R. Also where to set the resolution of the proxies? Important setting!

There's always going to be a given take. The majority of compress codecs will take more processing power for high-quality versions and sending DNxHD or DNxHR files isn't realistic due to the file size so compressed lower-quality proxies with a small file size is going to work for a lot of situations in my opinion.

I love how you explained this. The process is so simple that it's almost difficult because everything is working in the background. You mentioned that it's not a good idea to color off of proxies, but CAN you color the proxies? Maybe with the highest quality of the 3 choices? This would be huge with the new remote workflow. I would think that you wouldn't get the same flexibility and you'd of course lose the RAW benefits but I'd think you could at least balance the shots and tweak colors a bit (??)

You can color proxies but you will not have access to the full dynamic range and color gamut that your camera originals will offer. If you do color proxies and the flip over to camera originals, Resolve will apply the nodes that you created on the color page to the camera original files so that work is not lost or in need of being repeated.

Hi! Great video! Maybe a stupid question, but how about if you want to keep the proxies on a different hard drive than the originals? Is it possible to use the Generator in that situation?

I guess you can generate them, change the folder path and then relink them. But a custom folder path that resolve automatically picks up on would be ideal

Question please...If I already created proxies outside of Davinci. How can I incorporate the proxies in the new project and toggel back and forth like we do when we create them inside Davinci? did that make any sense? or is that even possible? Thank you

Can you add your own preset for Proxies like via media encoder? I need to keep the original Resolution of the RAW files, so that not everything is down to 422 proxy@1080p? is that possible? otherwise pretty neat!

Have you ever used handbrake proxies? I dont undertstand how its running so smoothly... its still an Mp4 4k close to half the size... smoother than ive ever seeen... even with several effects and color grading..

Hi, I have a problem when I use proxy media generator black. If the video I want to turn into a proxy video has mono audio, when I use the proxy it is muted. If I turn a stereo video into a proxy video, the audio is mono. How can I fix it? I would like to be able to hear at least one mono audio track for all videos (stereo and mono). the wait period that it uses to poll the watch folders is 5 minutes, not every few seconds. At least on the Mac. Additionally you can just drag and drop folders into the watch folder list. If you have sub-folders under a given watch folder they will be watched as well and get their own cild proxy folders within them.

What happens if you already have your footage separated into folders and you generate proxies. Does it do them all into one folder or separate folders?

if you have already have multiple folders, the generator just creates a proxy folder in each different location. so you can manually attach them via your NLE of choice.

Playing around with it I've noticed if you make subfolders to categories clips the proxy generator will make a proxy folder under each folder/subfolder for the files in that folder. That would make it a nightmare to try sending proxy files and folder structure. I was hoping it would just have one proxy folder at the top level and then duplicate your sub folder structure under that single proxy folder. Uuugh

Forget to mention - the crew back at BDR r a bunch of brainwaves - all this newgen level proxy stuff has taken a lot of minds and great ingenuity to have it arrive in our lap - kudos to them all. No wonder DR is so waycool- it's all about the crew who make it!

Yepp, really cool except... what if your source files are a mixture of mp4, mov files? If your plan is to send the proxy files to another user then they won't be able to relink to mp4 files if you have converted to .mov files ???

I like the proxy generator for 4k 16:9 footage. But für 5.8 K full sensor size footage, the quality is bad. To small in the wide.

A good tutorial. But you should do a short update mentioning that the proxy generator only creates files in 16:9 aspect ratio. So it's no good if you're working with 4:3 aspect ratio. E.g anamorphic, Open-gate, cinema 4K, 5K, 6K video files.

@@TheGuigotz Basically, the Proxy Generator Tool will produce 16:9 aspect ratio proxy files regardless of the aspect ration of original video. I.e 4:3 aspect ratio videos will have randomly cropped/resized 16:9 proxies and you will lose the option to reframe & manually crop your original 4:3 aspect ratio to 16:9 during editing.

Great to have a dedicated software for proxies. But I'm missing a few things. It would be nice to have an option to add suffixes to file names of proxies. Etc. my friend is editing on another NLE ( Premiere) where all proxies are with suffix '_Proxy'. So this option would open up more freedom for editors from other NLE's. That would make linkink raw files to proxies in Premiere automatic too. Also, it would be great to have an option selecting a lut so that the editing process with proxies would be visually more accurate and pleasant to work with.
