This is awesome. I actually discovered this myself totally by accident. I always used ProRes proxies until a couple of months ago when I transcoded a bunch of iPhone footage from 30 to 24 fps and used H.265 as the codec, and was shocked at how good the timeline performance was. I’m definitely a believer now!

Personally I edit on a 1080p timeline on Resolve directly from the original footage and it always works great for me (usually 4K all-intra 10bit 422 MXF files). I have a fairly powerful Mac as my main workstation so I don’t need to transcode to proxies and have additional files on my hard drives, but that’s just my workflow. Even though it can perfectly edit a 4K timeline I still edit in HD because there’s absolutely no point to cut footage in 4K and the machine don’t need to work as hard for countless hours while editing. Then I switch the timeline to 4K for color grading and to export. With that said, there’s definitely benefits to use proxies with some types of footage. Good job on the video, greetings

I started to do this a few months ago, too. Used ProRex proxies as I thought they would be better and then by accident discovered that H265 looks way better with way smaller file sizes. I'm on an M1 Max Macbook Pro, so no problems with H.265 either, especially not in 1080p. I was just wondering, would you say that serious color grading is possible with those H.265 proxies? It is a real pain in the *** to upload 400-800GB of original footage to our colorist when it could be done with just a few gigs of proxy.
@CreativeVideoTips4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I think of the proxy generator choices - the color on that h265 is the best of those choices. However, they are very compressed. If the colorists is doing any secondary adjustments at all it will be very tough to tell how clean those are. Noise reduction is also not going to be visible. But - if it is a fairly simple primary grade, I think it can work. You just need to make sure to do the render with the original media linked. I have an upcoming tutorial that will show how I send raw and not deal with 400-800GB,

8:53 one issue I see arising in this situation, is that the proxies that are generated in the proxy maker are only set up with in-camera audio tracks. If my remote editor needs proxies with external audio already synced, isn't this workflow going to cause issues? Or am I missing something? Our standard workflow for proxy generation is to sync audio first, create proxies (dnx, prores, etc.) retaining all audio channels for the proxies we send to the offline edit.
@CreativeVideoTips2 ай бұрын
@@samueltriplett yep that is a difference. However, you can also just send the source audio alongside the proxy video files with the resolve project file. The project file will know how they're synced and link accordingly. Nothing wrong with baking in the audio to proxy though.

I don't know about Mac, but in Windoes, in the Resolve app, it's important to make sure the (right) GPU is used for rendering and plauback. On a powerful PC with a decent GPU, generating H.265 is done at 5x to 10x speed or even faster. It should be pretty fast on a Mac Mxx CPU/GPU too.

The only reason this is a viable option is due to hardware acceleration. But being your system plays back H.265 files as well as it does, why not just do VFX with ProRes HQ files and not worry about it?
@8lec_R4 ай бұрын
1. Massive file sizes 2. Not all cameras shoot pro res 3. Compressed raw is better quality and more flexible than pro res. 4. It will still slow down after you add effects and colour. 5. Sharing camera originals online will be a massive pain
@avideomakr4 ай бұрын
@@8lec_R 1. ProRes and compressed RAW can be storage hogs, but quality always trumps file size. 2. No they don't. But if you're shooting in H.265 10-but 4:2:2, then you don't need to convert to ProRes. 3. Compressed RAW only provides flexibility when you use it. H265 removes most of that flexibility. ProRes preserves alot more. 4. No matter what, adding effects will slow your system down. ProRes is designed to ease the load - even more sore with Apple silicon hardware acceleration. 5. Sending huge files is always a pain regardless. ProRes proxy is made for editing, not pixel peeping VFX work. For that, you're much better converting to ProRes HQ or just using the compressed raw in the timeline for the specific shots you require. This way, your VFX work is utilizing all of the available data.
@8lec_R4 ай бұрын
@@avideomakr no. Quality doesn't trump size if you can't even store it. That is is the entire point of the video. And compressed raw is infinitely better than any prores codec. @@8lec_R This video is about using H265 as a proxy, but you keep saying that raw is better. I'm not arguing RAW isn't better, it most certainly is. But using H265 as a proxy to get critical work done, especially VFX work - as pointed out in this video - can and will lead to issues when you switch back to original files. You also can't say that RAW is the best while also saying you don't have enough space to store it or share it. You 👏 don't 👏 create 👏proxies 👏 only 👏 to 👏save 👏space - you use them to make editing faster, dependable, or more manageable when traveling. ProRes / DNx is an industry standard for a reason. They're visually lossless. ProRes Proxy isn't a format this creator should be using for the reasons he pointed out. It's not made for pixel peeping critical work. But ProRes and ProRes HQ blow H.265 out of the water in quality preservation, with RAW the only codec to beat it.

Or yet a better idea… Buy the new Mac M4 ultra when it’s released… I have the M1 Ultra and I can edit 8k video like butter. So why bother with proxies at all?

Your timeline is probably pretty simple. Hollywood editors always use proxies, no matter what.

1) THANK YOU!!! 2) But You said.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIaYd2iVpLCIl80si=_2Vx5g5PoUFynifs&t=772 So in a previous video you said you didn't use the Proxy Generator, because in Multicam or with Timecode on Audio Tracks or Any Sync Sound, you need to do all the syncing & linking first, THEN generate Proxies. At least that was my understanding from your previous video(s). Please tell me you have a workaround for this??? I have a documentary I've been shooting for years with Terabytes of 6K BRAW footage, all Multicam (usually 3, often 4, sometimes 2...never 1), plus Multitrack Sync Sound (usually Zoom occasionally Sound Devices), mostly locked together with Deity TC1s (though originally Jam Synced to the internal Camera Generators). I also have a Cloud Pod, Blackmagic Cloud accounts (currently linked to Google Drive, but interested in BM's cloud service), about 4 people across the country needing to connect to a Cloud Project, and a couple of M2 Mac Minis (which you mentioned could be a Proxy Generator Render Farm simply by networking with the Cloud Pod??) 3) So how do I reconcile your current and previous advice? When ingesting into DR, if the Camera Originals were copied over to the Cloud Pod attached storage, would those Sync and Link steps from your old video apply if I had the Cloud Pod generate proxies AFTER the steps in DR? Or does the Cloud Pod only "see" the Camera Originals as copied over, and disregard any information coming from Resolve? 4) I'm totally with you on the H.265. Avoided GOP like the plague, but understood the hardware processing & doubling of efficiency over H.264, so I figured it would someday make sense, because of course it would. And now it does. 5) And a last set of gotchas: Both the ATEM ISO Switchers, and the Blackmagic Cameras have "Proxy Like" workflows. However, last I really checked, they're All using different Codecs & Specs. It is now, and would further be amazing, to take 4 BM Cameras into an ATEM ISO, record All (so 4x 6K BRAW Camera Originals and 4x 1080 H.265 Proxies) and return from "On-Set" with both already complete. But ALSO for that workflow to MATCH the "Post" Proxy Generating, and either way reach the Blackmagic Cloud project identically. It shouldn't matter how you got there. Right? 6) As of the latest Camera Firmware updates, the Camera itself is generating Proxy files in a folder directly on the Camera Drives (4TB Sandisk Extreme Pros BTW)! I got PROXIES coming out of my ears! Chadwick HELP!!!

Hey, thanks for commenting. This is too much for a response on here though - do you mind pasting into the connect form on my website and I'll do my best to respond this weekend. Appreciate ya, and yes there's always exceptions to workflows.

@@grahamkay4034 well only because it is industry standart ? and if yes then why its becomes industry standart ? it is only because its like first NLE video editing program or because it has some unique features that other NLES don't have ?
