Blackmagic PYXIS 6K Hands on FIRST LOOK

This new budget Blackmagic cinema camera is causing quite a stir! Some People are stoked that the PYXIS 6K is a box style affordable cinema camera, others dislike that Blackmagic took away some things like internal NDs. What are your thoughts? My biggest question is if existing BP-U dummy batter to D tap adapters will work with this. Or if we have to wait for a specific 12v DC to d tap adapter made for the Pyxis. I have a bunch of v mounts that power many accessories and the price of large capacity BP-U’s is crazy

My biggest question I have with pyxis.... Can you plug a external monitor into the View finder USB-C port? Because I dont often bother with the view finder while filming.

only like 1 minute in, but why does this camera have controversy? this is what people asked for? You wanted a box camera. This is a box camera+the best monitor ever seen on a box camera. go buy a komodo/fx6/fx9 etc for 6-12k+ and then complain about black magic adding a small monitor for less than half the price realistically. go actually film things before you complain. as for sony fx3 and 30 got so much hype for such a dumb price and quality. dumb color science, dumb codecs, dumb frame rates. for twice the price of a pocket. what ive realized is that people care about cost more than quality.

We wanted basically a pocket camera but in the form of a box camera, and that's exactly what we got. People are mad because it still has 13 stops of dynamic range, but yeah, it's the same sensor as the pocket, so of course it does.

Question... It looks like resolutions lower than open gate have a cropped sensor. Is that true for all resolutions?? Curious because I'd like to know if you get the benefits of having less noise due to a larger sensor, or not. Otherwise, to me, it's kinda pointless. Sure you could use noise reduction in their software, but it's kind of a stupid decision to make the camera that way.

I'm a little confused as to why people think this camera is so incredible. Yes it's a box, but it's not a very small box. Why would you get this when you could get a BS1H, slap the video assist on it (you'll need an external monitor anyway for either camera) and still have Blackmagic raw. And that camera came out 3 years ago, and it has great autofocus and battery life. The Pyxis should have ditched the in-built screen and shipped with an external screen that can plug into one of the USB-C ports for monitoring and camera control, but still recorded Braw internally. And shrink it to BS1H size. That would have made it an amazing camera for rigging and gimbal work. As it stands now, you'd need a larger gimbal to accommodate it because it's too long and heavy. I only see this being a great camera for shoulder work, at which point get a used ursa mini 4.6K for the same price or less, and it will be far superior in many ways(unless you have to have full frame).

Really wish they would make this body with 6kpro’s s35 sensor and internal nd. The imx410 used on this is old, large latency and not clean noise at 2nd native iso, not even as good as the s35 one in my perspective

I think the biggest complaint about this camera is it kind of delivered what everyone wanted. Everyone wanted a modular box camera of the 6K PCC FF, which has an incredible sensor, amazing dynamic range and image quality, etc. AND it's a fantastic run and gun camera. What we lost with the Pyxis is that it is no longer a run and gun camera. No longer can we grab this camera and go shoot something easily because the screen and control are on the side. They almost hit it out of the park, but there are way more box camera styles out there that can still be used for run and gun and this one misses the mark on that.

There’s no SDI input for the Pyxis. It has 12G out, and it has a BNC connector for timecode/sync.

One HUGE thing people NEED to address is the recording option. BRAW only. - That means insanely huge files. I come from TV / broadcast / Doc/ smaller commercials. We have never shot files this big. I can only see this workflow being used in high end commercials and drama series. Where they already have budgets to rent better cameras anyways. Such a waste.

The amount of griping that has gone on around this camera is honestly ridiculous to me. I do wish it had the flip out screen of the Ursa, but it's clear the plan is to make the Ursa line the more fully featured line. If you've been accumulating gear then rigging this out shouldn't be an issue.

The kids are whining that there's no flippy screen. No, I'm not joking. And on the body specifically, Arri, Sony Venice and Red cameras have no flippy screen, so I don't understand the issue here. In other words, if one wants a budget run & run camera with cinema level image quality, get the Pocket. But if one wants a budget cinema camera with exquisite image quality that you can rig to the gills, get the Pyxis. Same sensor, two different product ranges. But unfortunately, there are a lot of kids that don't understand this.

@@McSnappples Thank you for explaining. I think the Pyxis is great. When you compare it to the BS1H from Panasonic, that camera has no screen at all. Is the quality of the sensor better than the BS1H?

@@asafblasbergvideographer the BS1H has roughly a stop more dynamic range, but it only shoots 10 bit internally, whereas the Pyxis shoots 12 bit internally, so that negates the extra dynamic range of the BS1H - which is still an excellent camera BTW! But that does mean if you want Raw from the BS1H, you need to buy an external recorder to do so. That starts at $500 minimum, so there is now no longer a price difference between either camera. And if you want pro audio on the BS1H, then you must also buy the Panasonic XLR adapter that fits the hot shoe on the BS1H in order to use it, whereas the Pyxis has a mini XLR jack on the front of it's the camera body. Overall, that makes the Pyxis a far more budget friendly option, especially if you add in the DaVinci Resolve Studio license that you get bundled with the camera for free whenever you buy a new BM camera. And in terms of pure colour science, both Panasonic & Blackmagic offer glorious images straight out of camera! But right now, I'd give the edge to Blackmagic, as it's colour science truly shines when used in Resolve. So if I were trying to decide between the two, as much as I love Panasonic cameras, in terms of overall workflow from shoot to post, the Pyxis is the superior option. Sorry for the essay 😉 But I hope that answers your question.

Lets go back 18 years ago, I shot a low budget TV drama series for 2 seasons with a Panasonic HVX200 . 720 lines rez. poor dynamic range and tiny sensor. Grainy as hell in low light. I paid $5500 for that camera and still had to add a $1500 optics rig just to give it a shallow dof and more filmic look. And I was THRILLED to be able to make something that looked (almost) network TV quality. Now there's this BM camera for $3000 miles ahead in tech. even a $1200 dslr can shoot better pictures than what I had. SO QUIT YOUR complaining about this camera. Even if you spent more money and got everything you wanted it wouldn't make you a better "filmmaker" ha ha.

Spend more for Less these black magic camera s are just repackage Pocket 4ks processors with different sensors added to them. they use cheap tricks like cropping into the sensor, instead of down-sampling, to get lesser formats and more frame rates. so, if you have some noises at open gate, you ll have big popcorn noises of the same image crop to 1080 for examlpe. Black magic carmera s do have a good image given adequate lighting condition. Blackmagic 6K Pro Pocket or Panasonic LUMIX S5IIx seem like a better value than the Pyxis for now.

The controversy is specifically between Indy solo shooters vs. production team shooters. The Pyxis is NOT meant to be a handycam with a little flip-out screen you take on your family vacation! Blackmagic will have an external camera control monitor soon. All REDs and all ARRIs have 7" control monitors on top. ARRI has their own camera control monitor the CCM-1 7” LCD screen. RED has their own DSMC2 and DSMC3 7.0" LCD screens. The Pyxis is a production set camera not a freak'in handycam!

13 stops OF DR is what 99% of cameras are shooting, including the Sony FX3. The images out of BM have always almost always been universally praised. The problem is your ignorance within the filmmaking space and inability to see through marketing fluff, for example Sony claiming 15+ stops of DR in their cams, or their claim to having AI in the cameras, both are demonstrably untrue.
