Sometimes things do not go according to plans. This was one of those times.....trying to make a beautiful scenic base for this Tiger Monk miniature, I instead made a hot mess. Thankfully the actual mini turned out really nice!

To help with your shakes.. get a stress ball or a equal sized ball of poly clay like sculpy. Squeeze the ball 20 times 3 times a day for a week if it is too much lower the reps to 10 if not enough add 5. After that week up it by 5 to 10 3 times a day for a week and so on goal should be 100 times 3 times a day. Th8s will strengthen your hands and wrist muscles and will begin to mitigate to just about stopping your hand shakes completely.

The urethane resin reacted to the water in the wash that was added to tint it. You have to use very specific things to tint urethan as it reacts like crazy to any moisture.

Oldmanfunky, I'm about to hit my 54th orbit around the sun. My eyes started going about 10 years ago. One day I could read my pager fine just by looking at it... the next day. I brought it up, moved it away, and eventually just tilted my head down and looked at it over my glasses from about 8 inches. And I'm just starting to paint minis again for the first time in about 30 years or more.

This both breaks my heart and makes me feel a lot better about some of the ways I've ruined my work as well. For me it's going from one medium to another and forgetting the properties: green stuff cures over time, so you can handle it, clays don't and you end up smashing hours of work because you done goofed.

Vendor - "Can you review one of our minis?" BMC - "Nah, there aren't any Japanese Plague Marines" Vendor - "We got a tiger monk..." BMC- "Hold my airbrush. Wait, I need that. Hold my poutine." Edit- This is in reference to BMC liking weird miniatures and getting excited over making new things and *not* some "ooh, the channel has sold out" nonsense. I strongly believe everything Jeremy does is 100% from the heart (look at his face when something fails or succeeds) including this project. His stance on poutine is still unknown to me, but I've never known a Canadian not to love it.

Disappear with practice? Uh, no. There are many medical reasons for hand shakes that don't "just disappear with practice". Essential tremors are a neurological disorder. My mother in law has Parkinsons Disease and has terrible hand shakes as a result. Should she "just practice" not shaking? Shake my head man.....shake my head.....
@samtobiasjohn

agreed. my grandmother suffers with hand shaking, not through anything diagnosed, but i feel like I've picked up some semblance of that tremor and it becomes especially prominent in my hobbies like painting minis and, more worryingly, my work as an illustrator. if I could "Practice it away" I would. unfortunately it doesn't work that way.

This is a familiar story to any miniature painter. You mess it up. You redo it. You mess it up again. You redo it. You repeat the process until you're happy with it (or until you lose the will to live). And sometimes you screw it up so completely that you just chalk it up to a learning experience. It's worth remembering though that anyone who tells you they get it right first time every time is full of it.

Failure is how we learn and grow. I think that's knowledge the world has kind of forgotten these days. You are able to adapt and succeed later learning from mistakes and losses. It's truly only failure if you quit and give up all together. You won't quit your builds, so it's a success in the fact you found a process that works differently than you expected. And can adapt to your future projects. Thanks for showing and reminding people mistakes happen and it's how we deal with them that makes us better.

To get in tighter with your airbrush and aid in accuracy, take the crown off it tip to expose the tip of the needle. Just be careful to not hit the point and bend it. This also allows you to clean the buildup that sometimes happens causing the spray pattern to go from round to something less predictable.

I had the exact same thing happen to me when I mixed a two-part epoxy with a few drops of wash while making swamp bases for my plague marines. Something about it caused that same bubble and swell. Killed an entire unit of marines quicker than a hail of plasma fire and left all but 2 unsalvageable. Never did figure out why it happened with one kind of epoxy and not another, either.

Oh man, so disheartening, but a great recovery with the second base. I also deal with the same essential tremor you talk about and understand the frustration. Thank you for providing your technique and how you deal with it.

I saw you add the wash, and my heart sank. So sorry you had to learn that resin and water don't really get along, by ruining your hard work. The miniature turned out fantastic tho!

I think that foam would look great coming out of a giant beasts or dragons mouth! next installment in "Uses for mysterious bubbly resin" tutorial. Great job forging ahead and completing a nice display. Rest easy knowing it was a pretty amazing scenic base that you accomplished! Love the channel keep up the great work.!

Do you have any idea how special it is as a viewer to see you make mistakes and learn from them? It truly helps us connect and realize that you are a mortal like us, and that we all need to be easy on ourselves. I actually really like the mistake and how you turned it into a great video. Much love man, I'm sure it was going to be epic!

As a tip when painting red - Start with a deeper/darker basecoat. Start with something much darker than you might normally consider acceptable - I normally swear by a 50/50 mix of Khorne Red and Abaddon Black. Follow up through several layers until your final highlight layer is bright scarlet. Voila, you don't need to use any white, "pink" or yellows in your highlight stages. Reserve orange for your finest edge highlights, but do so sparingly.

Thank you for sharing the result of mixing the poly with a wash - I just got my resin in the mail and likely would have made the same mistake! Another awesome video. Cheers

Yep, I've made that mistake too... fortunately for me, I was making castings into silicone molds so the mess at least didn't damage anything. Water in the reaction makes it outgas carbon dioxide and you create (more or less) foam rubber.

If you have problems with the normal washes (staining look) try out oil washes. Its soo easy to get a really nice look and you mostly dont need to repaint the paint below.

I get horrible shakes too and have tried everything. I’ve got one thing that works but it requires weeks of exercising my hand muscles before spending a few hours on painting. But your method of holding it close to your body like that I am totally going to try. Thanks!!!

This is what happens to me every time I try to leave my comfort zone. I've ruined so many projects because I didn't know what I was doing properly, so these days I spend more time testing and agonizing over every decision that I barely get anything done.

It's a shame things didn't go as you wished, it was a beautiful base. That said, the foaming reaction might do well as a snow effect(or maybe sea foam). Also, I have only recently started painting minis, but I've also discovered that extreme slouch position to help steady my hands. Even with your setback, you made a very nice base. Keep up the good work!

Resin and moisture do not mix. Glad you have the insight to use it in a new way in a different project. Stay humble and learn from your mistakes. I really enjoy your attitude and the no shaky huggy pose.

Tip for highlighting: Use warm tones for warm colours (skintones/bonewhites/etc.), and cool tones for cool colours (bluegrey/turquoise/cool greys). Using pure white makes your basetones more pastel. If you want to keep saturation at max, use yellow instead.

Jeremy if you want to lighten red use flesh colour it won't give you that pink . For eyes try Archer fine transfers in the US , they do a decal sheets with different scale eyes. And yep any moisture in polyurethane resins will create what you did. You need p/u colours specifically. Good job painting the fur , the figure looks excellent and so did the base.

Jeremy- Keep doing what you do man! I love that you show us your mistakes, talk about them, learn from them, adapt and move on. Without learning from our mistakes, we cannot get better. Sometimes I feel bad for you though, that you have to end up with something you weren't totally happy with. I guess that's the downside to being a KZbin Streamer, you have to produce content on a timeline. I hope you get a chance to "redeem" your base, and do it over. That was a hell of a base. I keep looking to your channel each and every time I need a tip on how to do something terrain wise to see if you've done it, and I can learn little bits from you as far as mini painting too, in the small clips you show if and when you have to paint a mini for something. Again, just keep rockin man, I look forward to your videos every week. Cheers!
I discovered a technique that made me love mini painting!
