The American media would never show this side of Iraq, let alone the fact that black people live there in harmony. All we see is a war-torn country. Thank you, BDT, for opening our eyes.

I am a U.S. military retiree (African American) who was deployed to Zakho, Iraq in 1991. I had the opportunity to meet both Kurds and other populations located in the Northern part of the country. Though I don't totally understand the way the women are treated in their society/culture, I found most of those living in the area to be friendly towards myself and other blacks. I did cross paths with a few blacks folks living in the area, but had little to no interaction with them.

As an Arab, I want to clear some things. For us, there's LITERALLY no racism (in the sense that you hate someone just because he is black/white), and in my opinion some of the main reasons are: 1- Islam clearly condemns racism multiple times. 2- The original Arabs themselves weren't all white, and they ranged from very dark brown all the way to white, which made them see it as a normal part of life (even though there was racism before islam, it made it easier for islam to abolish it.)

I am a 60yo East African. It never occurred to me that there are black Iraqi! I realise that this is a result of the monopoly of the biased conversations of western media which I spent many years following. Looking at Global issues now I am realising how insiduous their bias is and how it shapes our individual world view. For example the history of Egypt is carved out and separated from the rest of Africa yet the Egyptians interacted and traded with their neighbours. Nobody really talks about the pyramids in Sudan and that civilisation. I am grateful for social media that has enabled us to visit Iraq and learn about our brothers and sisters there. Thank you for sharing this story.

I was surprised to meet Black Chinese working at an Amusement Park in ShenZhen (special economic zone) of China. Called Windows of the World. Dark like me with woolley hair!! They did speak English, Mandarin & their own tribal language. They approached me because I had braids & they did not know how to braid or twist their own hair. 2 males & 1 female about 25-28 yrs old. I had a water bottle and Queen Helene coco butter lotion in my travel bag. Sat each one down individually and braided two and twisted the female's hair. Gorgeous, healthy full heads of hair about shoulder length. I taught the lady how to braid on the spot in 15 mins. A wonderful experience for them, but an eye opening humble experience for ME!! Just friendly, informative and brotherly love all around!! This was amazing!!

For education, man, we know what you are going through in a country that describes itself as a country of freedom. We know that you are being killed by the white police there and you are being treated with racism. We in Iraq do not treat black people here with racism. They are part of us and we are part of them. We are one. We do not care about the color of the skin, but the color of the heart. There lies true beauty.❤❤

I have a question. What does pan-africanism look like in this context? These black Iraqis are descendants of the Zanj who have been there for at least 1500 years. That’s a very long time and they have assimilated culturally, linguistically, ethnically, religiously and genetically to the region. Do you expect them to wake up one day and have a black African identity? Do you think they should leave Iraq and go to Africa? I’m genuinely curious, what does pan- africanism look like in the context of these people?
@JessJayEel
@JessJayEel 2 ай бұрын
@Jareers-ef8hp They represent the children of Africa. They don't have to do nothing but exist as Iraqis. The reason why it is important to know your history is to make sure it doesn't repeat itself. These Black Iraqis know why they exist and should always advocate to never sit by and watch their "arab brothers" to use black people as slaves again. So us being all over the world is to ensure African slavery never happens again ✊🏿
