Ritchie admitted in Vermont to never having been praised as a child. I sense damage there. When Purple played the Concerto for Group and Orchestra in 1969 Ritchie didn't want to do it, but his performance was the most exciting of the lot. And when you realise the band's parents were in the Albert Hall that night, it gives you some insight as to why he pulled out the stops for a project he had no interest in. Something about that feels very sad.

Speaking of Mk II, Gillan obviously came up with most of the vocal melodies. Sure, Lord's Hammond was an integral part of the DP sound. Their inability to compromise was an integral part of both their success and their self-destruction - hardly news I agree. Jon Lord himself commented during interview that Ian Gillan being allowed to leave in '73 was a huge regret for him and possibly a huge mistake and, as Jon went on to say, if only the management had allowed the band a break in around late 1972 / early 1973 then the band may well have remained intact, Jon even speculated on greater success with a continued Mk2. Certainly Mk3 soon became unstable as Ritchie didn't appreciate what he referred to as "shoeshine music" (Ritchie's words not mine).

Listening to these interviews, Gillan rightly accepts most of the responsibility for creating a working environment that was too hard for Blackmore & the rest of the band to be productive in. They were being paid a lot of money to produce a quality product, so they made him leave. Blackmore never says anything nasty about him. Gillan on the other hand never misses an opportunity, then or now, to get nasty & personal. It's about time he grew up & realised it's not all just about him! He was a great & unique singer, but so selfish & unprofessional.
