"One of these days, I am going to attack Ian when we are on the road. He's bigger than me, and probably a better fighter... So I am gonna do it with a few friends of mine... probably SWEDISH...And we'll beat him up, but he won't know its me!" - Ritchie Blackmore This has been one of my favorite lines of plotting for at least 7 years. And the intro to the song adds hilarious tension.

Gillan is CLASS! I saw him perform at the House of Blues. After the great show he joked around and signed autographs from the stage for EVERYONE who wanted one and it wasn't even a scheduled "autograph signing." He signed his last one after he asked "anyone else?" and no one responded. Ritchie and Tony and Geezer for that matter would NEVER do anything close to that!

This is probably one of my favorite videos ever. I quote it all the time, in the same way people quote the Buddy Rich tapes. To me, it's on that level of comedy. Ritchie admitted in Vermont to never having been praised as a child. I sense damage there. When Purple played the Concerto for Group and Orchestra in 1969 Ritchie didn't want to do it, but his performance was the most exciting of the lot. And when you realise the band's parents were in the Albert Hall that night, it gives you some insight as to why he pulled out the stops for a project he had no interest in. Something about that feels very sad.

At the end of the day, both these guys are very strong personalities. Richie went off to be a court jester on some other planet. Ian gillan is still in deep purple, so 1 nil to him really. Lots of bands that are on the go today do not fair well without the difinitive singer/front man, ask judas priest and iron maiden what happened when halford and dickinson left in the 90's, they went down the tubes. You must have the front man, like him or not ian gillan IS the deep purple front man...period

Saw them at their second to last gig with Blackmore in 1993, and it's still the best concert I've ever been to! Blackmore was really difficult at the time, as I experienced since I was staying at the same hotel as the band, but Blackmore went out on stage during that tour with one purpose: To blow the rest of the band offstage! That made sure the band played at the best of their ability, and the concert I attended..... Nothing can ever come close!!!

Dio, Powell... and... and... who else? Gillan? Coverdale? They were likely going places, and yeah, hitching onto Purple's fame didn't hurt... but they were still earning their pay. Speaking of Mk II, Gillan obviously came up with most of the vocal melodies. Sure, Lord's Hammond was an integral part of the DP sound. In terms of compositions, Blackmore and Glover were dominant composers. Lord added his own mini-compositions in his solos, but most Mk II songs were composed by Blackmore and Glover.

Listening to these interviews, Gillan rightly accepts most of the responsibility for creating a working environment that was too hard for Blackmore & the rest of the band to be productive in. They were being paid a lot of money to produce a quality product, so they made him leave. Blackmore never says anything nasty about him. Gillan on the other hand never misses an opportunity, then or now, to get nasty & personal. It's about time he grew up & realised it's not all just about him! He was a great & unique singer, but so selfish & unprofessional.

Probably because he still holds a grudge for being pushed out of the biggest selling band in the world back in 72-73 and then to have Mark 3 enjoy the rewards. Gillan turned down the movie JSSS for DP only to be squeezed out a year later. I am sure he still thinks about all those things.

I don't think the MK2 (C) lineup would have survived much longer anyway even if Ritchie hadn't have exited stage left in '93. I love all of Purple's colourful career but for me the MK2 lineup had that little bit extra, probably caused by the tension between these two giants.
