So glad to see you passing your family’s legacy on to the next generation as your Dad passed his on to you. That is awesome. Having said that, all hijinks aside, I really do appreciate your also passing the knowledge on to us as well. I have said it many times how much I want to give this a go, and after watching this video I can see it will be a long learning curve. But rest assured that I do recognize that as fact and am prepared to invest the time, the money, and the energy and concentration into learning this skill set. I know it will take more than I have to give at the moment, but I have already started my search for some second hand lapidary equipment, and when I finally attain what I think I will need to get started I just might reach out.

Ah, this was such a big help, thanks guys. I’ve watched lots of clips on dopping up the stone but I’m never sure on how much heat to use on opal. Sapphires were the only stones I get to stay on, the opals kept flying off. I may need a little more heat & experience. I’m learning this as a semi-retirement hobby, if my hands are up to it. I’m using a dremel though & I’m making whatever ornamental shapes I get, even the potch has some fancy patterns in white to grey/black, it’s all good practice. I also need to find a clip on making up the dopping sticks, the wax sets Fast! It’s incredible stuff. I found my metal tweezers or lab spatula was a great tool to pat the wax as it cools, rather than my fingers. I’ve enjoyed your channel & this older one’s a big help.

That was really enjoyable and informative, but do most beginners start with a set of wheels, including the polishing disc? If not, what other set up could a novice begin with, besides a dremmel? Can a table grinder be adapted with a couple of wheels and can a wet tile saw be used for slicing?
