Hi, I enjoy your videos, but I do have to disagree on one point. As a former soldier, I’d deploy for training for 4-6 weeks at a time into the woods… we never had time or equipment to clean out the army plastic canteens, but they never were getting funky. Sure, if time and supply allowed, we would rinse them out with fresh water, but cleaning? That only happened after return to the rear, so after 4-6 weeks of daily use. Never did I have a funky canteen in that use scenario.

FYI: On canteens or you thermos for cleaning. Carry a few Polident tablets with you. use some luke warm water to fill it then drop a couple tablets in it and let sit overnight and rinse in the morning. It will clean even coffee stains and leaves a little bit of a minty flavor that actually helps the taste of the water in it.

Just a tip, when drinking from a canteen or any water container, Do nt put your lips or mouth onit. hold the nozzle a bit above your mouth and pour the water in your mouth, This wikll eliminate Backwash from your lips and mouth. Keeps water cleaner. Love your videos , Never stop.

I find i like the old GI style plastic or metal and the flat handle cup. The flat handle cup has a slot in it so you can insert a bayonet tip in it and have an extended length handle ...also it will string onto the GI mess kit along with the GI utensils so you can dunk the hold kit and caboodle into a garbage can full of hot soapy water swish it around , move down to the next can full of clean water to rinse and you clean your whole set up with a couple of dunkings....very efficient when you got a line of busy GI's waiting to clean their dinner mess.

Good point- Canteens can get funky. So, often I'll wash out juice bottles (etc) and use those as canteens. They're clear so I can see any sediment or nastiness inside. Many have wide mouths. They're free. And when they get funky, I throw them in the trash. Many bottled water containers are thin (near paper thin) so those are not good to re-purpose as canteens. Fruit juice bottles are usually very rugged. Gaiter aid bottles are also tough, and many others.

I recommend acquiring an extra molle canteen cover. Use two shoulder straps from a 2 qt canteen (or equivalent; I used LAPG straps) and attach to cover making a neck strap and chest strap. This makes a great snivel gear bag when you are hauling a pack. Not recommended for hunting because it rides where binos would normally rest. I carry trail mix, Copenhagen, small headlamp, and compass in mine.

Good information in that video. I use a Nalgene canteen and a stainless steel canteen cup with a cover similar to yours. In the outside pockets I carry a pot stand for the Trangia stove and a lighter. I am happywith this setup. The transparent canteen is also easier to keep clean as I can see the dirt. At home I use stainless steel balls for cleaning. That works very well and does not damage the canteen.

Blackie, it's always a pleasure to watch your videos. I appreachiate your work. You've got so many really handy tips. In my case I use a Pathfinder stainless steel canteen with the cup minus the stove. As I've written on a live stream of yours, I combine it with the german Esbit folding cooker by the Bundeswehr. I mostly don't use it with Esbit dry burning bricks but I've found a screwable flat can, which I filled with soot-free burning paste. I guess in the states you can get it by walmart in the kitchen/cooking departure. For table stoves like Raclette or tea stoves. The can is from amazon and fits into the Esbit folding cooker perfecly, instead of the Esbit bricks. The paste in the can is cheap. On top less in volume and saver than an alcohol stove because of its consistency (in my opinion). And instead of the original burning bricks, by its can lid extinguishable and relightable. I made some additional clip-on wind shields for both sides of the folding cooker from an aluminium metal plate that I bought at a hardware store. That's everything I need for making a tea, coffee or a simple soup. The Esbit cooker fits into a side pocket of my canteen bag. If I take an alcohol stove with me, I put the Esbit folding cooker sideways on the ground and set the alcohol stove in it and the cup on top. Heard of that trick before? But I think you've got a bit more solid solution by the bottomless aluminium stove which acts as a ring around the canteen and its cup, that you click below the cup by pressing it a little. Does it fit around the pathinder cup as well instead of the original US cup? This solution of yours has less weight than the Pathinder stove, because aluminium instead of stainless steel is lighter as we all know. So I prefere your way, over Mr Canterburys stove in this combination, but haven't tried it out so far. My equipment focuses on reducing weight, durability, less volume... and the reason of the pathfinder canteen over a nalgene is the more simple cleaning at home by a brush into its wide mouth opening, and that the bottle can be made bacteria-free by cooking during a trip, directly in the wilderness, without water purification tablets. Sorry for this extreme long comment. All my best wishes and respect from Germany to you, and thumbs up. River Bank Viking ...hope I didn't make too many mistakes on the english language ;)

I've tried those coffees from MEC but it was a US brand (expensive), I ruined the first one but got the second one to work. So they are fragile. Cool to see a local supplier. VIA Columbia is still my go to, but I want to try other ways. First time buyers should reuse as much as possible. A Gatorade/Pepsi 1L/Smartwater bottle is basically free compared to a $15-$20 canteen, as a bonus carry 1 or 2 extra caps with you as those are free as well. You could use a spoon from the kitchen, but better still buy one from Dollarama so you don't cry if you lose it or re-use a sturdy plastic one from Dairy Queen or other place (some are stronger than others and use with care). Military surplus is always fun, but limited for many people if they don't want to mail order it.

I have one of those old World War II canteen cups and cover with the artificial for liner. I couldn’t find the original stainless steel canteen only the reproductions and the aluminum ones. I hate the little chain because I think it kind of gets in the way but some people like it because you can use the cap and the chain to pick it up out of the fire. You just have to make sure it doesn’t get close enough to the power to melt the cap. I also have one of the old plastic green canteen’s and the digicam cover with the pockets. It is very useful. I put the water, purification tablets and some other things in those little pockets. I have a back up system of a couple of Sawyer mini Water filters because they are very compact and light and easy to carry. I think, finding the right balance of good old, reliable, military surplus and modern more advanced technological equipment is a good balance. Everybody has their preference. It really comes down to the circumstances that you’re using your kit for. Do you need lighter or do you need harder wearing? Do you need a balance of both? I try to get a balance, because that way I can use it wherever and whenever.. A lot of people push all these new knives and bush crap, knives, etc. etc. but I still have my aircrew survival knife and I have a couple of folding knives. I have bought and a multi tool and another one I was issued in the service and also the pocket knife. My dad gave me many years ago. I think in threes. always have a primary and secondary and a back up. Good video Blackie. Where in the world are you at? That’s an awful lot of aircraft, traffic helicopters and planes. You must be near an airstrip.

Soaking an army canteen cover to cool the canteen was a cool (pardon the pun) concept IF you did not plan on carrying the canteen on your belt. In practice, the wet cover would dampen any clothing it touched, and damp clothing could cause chafing. I tried it on a 20 mile hike (1964) and ended up with sufficiently severe chafing to require sick call. Roughly 25-30% of out basic training company required a liberal dose of very messy salve.

I guess the chafing was also the result of having the canteen bouncing on my hip for an extended period of time. I didn't have any problems when the weather was cold and the canteen was carried tightly against my waist over a field jacket.

I have maybe 4 little rollup bottles with clips for smaller water runs 500ml each, drop half a puritab in one and it's ready when needed but I'm not tempted to lug litres around unneccessarily, two 2l bladders for a more settled set up at destination. Edit* 2x stanley sets for the cooking duties, only one cup in each.

I’ve been carrying the 24oz Grayl for a couple months now. But the first hike I used it on I underestimated its holding capacity do to its size and almost got myself in trouble on a 11 mile two day hike. I knew I had lake access at 5.5 mile, then 3 mile from their, then another 2.5 from there. Luckily it started raining that first night and was able to gather water off my tarp other wise I would have been screwed. The moral here is the Grayl is the best filter Ive ever used. I love that when you filter lake water it tastes like store bought bottled water and no fishy taste. But make sure you always bring a Nalgene or some kind of water storage container and not rely on just the Grayl. I know this whole scenario was dumb on my part but maybe someone can learn from my stupidity.

Be honest Blackie, I was always surprised you didn't get the British issue bottle to go with your Crusader cup or was it a case of overwhelming shipping charges

I had that plastic canteen for the whole 10 years I was in. you never wanted to have to drink with the chemical mask straw.... they were NASTY, I wish that Kleen Kanteen had existed when I was in, having 40 oz of water, in something I could set in a fire would have been a game changer. some times when we would spend several weeks out in places with no resupply, we would have to try to clean out plastic canteens in the field, and it really sucked. all that being said, the ARMY sets are really well designed for what they were, and what they knew back then.

nice and thank for the tip on the cover for the pathfinder kit but I one complaint about the canteen the lid leaks any figure how stop it!

For most containers that might leak (small containers for air travel, various glass jars, or for storing powders etc.) close the top tight over a large piece of plastic wrap. It makes almost any container air tight and leak proof plus it's cheap, and reusable.

Great view. What about the Keith Titanium Canteen Mess. Ok expensive, but as a life time investment?

have not tried one but the weight savings might make it a good choice

Great video. The only military canteen I have used is the soft 2 qrt. It's a really nice rig, but if water gets really warm, you get a rubber taste which is really awful. I've soaked it in vinegar, which makes it usable again, but any idea if one could permanently eliminate this problem? Thanks!

some of those just seem to be that way i have one of those my first one was like yours the rubber / plastic taste just would not go away..i bought another one and no problem so ya might wanna drop it on a garage sale and get and buy another one

I prefer the butterfly handle than the clipped handle cup. Many time the clip of the cup unclipped itseIlf and spilled all my food into the fire. I changed all my canteen cups to butterfly handle canteen cups.. I'm still pissed. LOL

Lived off grid Northeast Washington state for a year and a half. Snow melt from the garage roof 20 acres of wet wet wildland.. sometimes after like an hour and a half my coffee was water starting to boil and the whole thing spilled on the fire sometimes it would take me over 2 hours to make a hot cup of coffee
@baronedipiemonte39903 жыл бұрын
And if done carefully, you can cross two sticks in the "wings" in an " X " to lift the cup out of the fire.
