Hey Blackie! Been using the same compass (Boy Scout Pathfinder) since 1967 and have not had to change the batteries or recharge it yet! great video, thanks! The trick, sight on a faraway object, tree, big rock, etc. put your compass in your pocket, walk to the object, take out your compass sight on another faraway object along your bearing, put your compass in your pocket, walk to the object, repeat until you reach your final destination, this method negates any concern about "drift". Just a little trick I learned long ago and far away in a land that time forgot. :)

Good information! I love using a compass, ever since I learned to use one. In fact, I don’t even like to enter the woods without one. I’d be walking in circles in no time.

You got that right we used to take twenty compasses at a time and check if they even pointed north in my unit try and get enough for all the teams to have at least one good. Have fun stay safe.

Good stuff. I have a different method of testing compasses, which is worth sharing: First, I let the needle settle to the north, put it in the shed and then I flip the compass upside-down north to south (lengthwise). Now the needle should be pointing south, but the compass face is down. I then very quickly flip it back face up, but this time east to west (sideways). Done quickly enough, you should be able to see how fast the needle goes back to north. The biggest advantage of this is you can also see how much "bounce" (going left-to-right back and forth) the needle does before settling. The faster it points north and the quicker it settles, the better the compass. Surprisingly the fastest compass I've sen so far is a Brunton, which is a very underrated brand. ...I'd like to add about cellphones: if your signal is weak to nonexistent (like it often is in the wild) and you don't put it in airplane mode, your battery will drain in record time as it is reaching as loud and often as it can for a tower. I usually keep mine off in those conditions.

Excellent advice, Blackie. I use much the same method, when purchasing a quality compass. I've also gotten into the habit over the years, to carry two compasses at all times, when travelling through remote areas. In case one compass is lost or broken, I always have a back up. I never rely on GPS for navigation, either. Except when in conjunction with a compass, to verify course or map position.. Always carry a topo map of the area, too.

great advise on that, and that is why I have more than one . And in the great words of most of ya is "two is one and one is none" and knowing how to tell direction by other means can be beneficial, won't be as precise as a compass but at least you'll know the general direction you will be going .

Great topic Blackie. Technology is great, but there's always a few different things that can adversely affect the gizmos. A top quality compass and knowing how to use it is important. Also knowing how to determine cardinal directions using the analog watch is just as important.

Hello Blackie ! Whats the best and easiest way to learn how to use a compass ? I'm 60 years old and have never learned to use a compass , I have a natural sense of direction and that has always been good enough to keep me from getting lost. I'd still like to learn how to use a compass , I have an old Silva compass that I got in Cub Scouts back in the 70's. It's still in the clear plastic box that it came in with the instructions for it. I'd really appreciate your help. P S , I can't get the hang of it reading the Silva instructions.
