its not fake if it doesn't claim the brand. You should feel proud, that is cool, that is a couple racks on your wrist, nothing to be ashamed of, absolute flex, absolutely sick, watch brands constantly homage one another, so it's not even taboo, otherwise the big watch companies have to take a bite of that crow too.

This brings me back to the origin story of Richard Mille. At its conception the idea was to build the watch in high volume around the 10-15k price point. When making the prototypes they stumbled upon the ultra high net worth market and found immediate attraction to the prototype pieces. At this point they pivoted the company to operate in this space with the according pricing. Ever since then I’ve looked at RM differently, as the core design of the product has been engineered to be able to fit those initial constraints but the price has become a marketing tool in itself. Since then of course the brand has evolved, but the thought of an affordable RM product has never left my mind and I’ve always felt that there is a missed chance for us customers to be able to enjoy their fabulous design at a more attainable price pikt . As an automotive engineer I instantly fell in love with the design of RM, but I’d have to trade in my whole collection in order for me to afford even the cheapest baby Nadal, not to speak of the servicing costs. By chance i found myself in Geneva when i saw your insta post, so i went out and checked out the Blackou watch in person. Overall I’m very aligned with the comment in your video. I have a couple of details you were looking for: The Tourbillon is made in China as is the carbon forged case. They also have a non Tourbillon version that is based on a ETA movement and in my opinion is an even better value proposition. one of the first things that struck me in a negative way was the thickness of the piece, also the 3D printing of the side of the case lacks finesse in my opinion. As a conclusion I would say that by setting their prices so high Richard Mille clearly left an umbrella under which other companies can operate, Frank Muller has the Vanguard playing in this space now we have another addition with Black-Out. With a few tweaks and a bit more originality in the design they could have a hit, and remind all of us that the intrinsic value of a RM is far disconnected from it’s price point, which is also true for most popular ‘high end’ watch brands such as Rolex. But that’s a story for another time :)

Thanks. Wow you ran out to the store in this time! Cool! What is your source for the idea that early RM was to be high volume 10-15k? That is not my understanding and I have some different data, but I'm curious as to where you got that from

Nick; Very astute synopsis of the watch! My hat is off to you. You have given us information about Richard. Mille that is likely unknown to most. That the $1.2,000,000 watches were designed to be a production watch with a retail price a thousand times less than his retail on a couple of hundred watches is today!

Great video and I still can wrap my head around the cost of RM’s in general. I get that something is worth what someone will pay for it, but RM’s seem overpriced from any reasonable perspective. Would I love to own one? Hell yes! It’s like Chinese made knives, they used to be (and still are in some cases) junk. Not so much anymore. For the million it would take for the real one, you could own a couple of FPJ’s which to me have so much more soul. Thanks for the great content! That watch is a cool “beater” with a tourbillon!

Hi Steve! Thanks for the video. As always with your content, really educational. Considering the ETA 2824 version of the watch being the workhorse of the watch industry and an easy to service movement I perceive it as a good value proposition. (I don’t have knowledge on the long term reliability of the Chinese movement, so that’s why I take the ETA one as a baseline ). With the explosion of prices across so many brands that are narrowing access to the hobby for so many enthusiasts. In my opinion this watch might fall in the same no frills “fun” alternative that gives access to some level of experience for an iconic model of the watch hobby, maybe a similar situation of a Gevril Tribeca with a Paul Newman Daytona. As you mention in the video the company is not using any RM branding or gross misrepresentation that might be harmful to the public. Best, Rodrigo.

Very interesting to see the price point of RM watches being increasingly challenged. It feels like the bubble is about to burst. I too purchased an RM lookalike just to get a feel for the brand, but unlike all the other watches in my collection it does not feel authentic, therefore it does not get worn as much as it should, because it is a perfectly good watch.

Here's an interesting thought experiment. Suppose that the watch was improved to reflect the issues identified in the video. In other words: basic bevelling on the edges of all bridges (albeit executed relatively cheaply with a hand operated tool); a bit more skeletonization and depth; better screws; PVC on the tourbillon and basic bevelling on the cage. Suppose it costs $5k with those improvements. Question: if the corresponding RM would cost $5m, why should we prefer the RM? Just because it is more expensive - for the sake of that alone?

The correct answer is for the original thought and inspiration. But the whole exercise highlights how easy it is to create very good mechanical watches with little actual value using modern technology
@aaronw4537

First of all, hand finishing IS one of the biggest factors of cost in high horology. But let's assume you could achieve what you are saying for 5.000$. Then you still have a terrible movement that can run +/-25 sec/day, is not shock resistant at all and can probably be thrown away after a few years. With an RM you get G-Shock levels of shock resistance and comparably eternal reliability. Some of their movements can be regulated to +/-15 sec/MONTH which is absolutely insane. Putting the movement aside, I also think that the case finishing is quite bad for a 3000$ watch here. Look at all the spots where different parts meet, check out the sharp edges and don't get me started on the crown... There are 150$ watches with better finished cases. Is RM overpriced? Probably yes. Is the Blackout Concept overpriced? Definitely.

this almost feels like a very interesting social experiment. if most of the attributes of an RM watch are hit for $2,000 then where exactly does the other $998,000 go? i often ask myself this sort of question when viewing other product lines across multiple brands under the same umbrella. tudor watches retail for almost a quarter of what a rolex goes for (not counting resale value). the quality is identical and they use different movements. yet one is more highly regarded monetarily and culturally than the other. just how much of a watch's price is taken up by materials, labor, corporate greed, or brand perception? these are questions we need to ask ourselves more often and answer honestly if we think we have any influence on the hobby at large.

Awesome review Steve and a very interesting array of points. To non-watch people, I think this would be almost indistinguishable from an RM, putting them next to each other. Maybe, maybe, one would notice some overall details, finishing etc, but it is not a "day and night", Volkswagen - Rolls Royce, coach - business class, North - South Korea noticeable difference. Thing is, why buy RM (or any high-end brand, for all that matter)? I think/agree that, heart of hearts, most (not all) of the motivation to purchase and wear such a brand is to show that you are actually able to spend 1m+ or anything in such magnitude on an object. So why buy "Blackout Concept" or Steinhart or Ginault or anything like that? Well, I believe somewhere on the spectrum of: 1) you (either purposely or subconsciously) want other people to think that you're wearing the real thing. or 2) you have a very big middle finger to the insanely succesfull (and almost manipulative) branding and marketing departments of the Rolexes and RMs of this world. Because heart of hearts, in all honesty, if a brand can make something for 2500 bucks which is truly pretty close to the brand does it for 1 million (!), 2500 for the win right? Giving people with a smaller budget the ability to also enjoy these designs: awesome! Think of it this way: If people could buy a Ferrariish like car with seriously pretty decent specs, a pretty good sports engine, looks and feel for 800(!) bucks (if 1m RM = 2400 dollars for blackout concept, then 330K ferrari = 800 dollar car) people would be like: F*ck yeah I'm spending that mere 800 dollars and I really, really don't give a flying sht if people judge me, look at the fun I'm having! "yEaH bUt iTs nOt a ReAl FerRarI", 'yeah, well, good luck spending that extra 329.200 dollars if that is so super important to you!' Hell, I'd buy that 800 dollar car for one weekend for all I care! Why not the same with this stuff? For me, my love for watch collecting actually started with a Steinhart, and even though I now have the ability (and worn off spine and lack of self control) to have bought the likes of Tudor and Rolex (and looking for the next thing every day, dammit) I still wear that Steinhart a lot and I still like it a ton. Why? I don't have to baby it, it was my gateway to this amazing hobby and whenever anyone asks 'iS tHaT a RoLeX?' I end up having the coolest/nicest conversation regarding the exact points you mention in your video. It really is way more similar than all us watch snobs would argue. Yeah yeah, heritage, history bla bla: its a steel(!) watch with a swiss movement. Yes of course the R is better, but is it really, really thát much better? I'd be a liar if I'd deny that deep down I bought it back in the day because it looks like a sub, but the point is: I don't pretend it to be and never did. Funniest thing is that I love giving my non-watch-nerd friends both my Steinhart and f.e. my 2002 Explorer2 and ask them: how much do you think these are worth? No one got it right, ever. Puts things into perspective. So if you want your friends to think you have a RM and you buy this: stop! Buy amazing stuff for 2500 bucks which is way cooler and the real thing! Yet: if your dream watch in the entire world is a 1m RM which you can never, ever, afford, but you can buy this: please buy it! you can enjoy the same design for a fraction of the price! who says you can't? Go and enjoy the living sht out of it! I think that the best watch in the world is the one you cherish and have for yourself, and the worst watch is the one you buy to basically show other people you have had the financial means to buy something. That philosophy goes for any budget, if you ask me. Unless you have a Dufour, then you're just a straight up legend. ;) Anyways. Whoever read the whole braindump: thanks for reading this. Love!

I think your price analogy to a $25k sofa and a $2k homage is appropriate, I think it’s quite obvious by the existence of a watch like this for $2k, that the $1MM RM is not delivering value, RMs are very cool, but price should be a factor, there are many watches that are priced high but deliver value, or at least a better ratio of cost to value. This is the reason I buy Lange watches, I really feel like I’m getting what I pay for. My neighbor just got an RM11 in CF, it’s a very cool watch, but is it that much better than an Omega Speedmaster in Ceramic? Not really, but for the rarity and design I would pay a premium, maybe double that Speedmaster, but not the $250k that he spent.

My thoughts: I think it is fine to have RM inspired design as long as they aren't putting fake logos. However here is my issues: 1. the Silicone seems to be a cheaper type that attracts lint. I think there is high grade rubber (vanilla scented) than can go on this price point watch as well as silicone that doesnt have this kind of issue 2. This movement is reused on many chinese brands, which is fine, but takes away from the uniqueness I dont want to post links, but in Aliexpress, there are at least 5-7 brands easy reusing the same movement 3. A good deciding factor for me as well is the Lume, good to mention that in the future. 4. Another take away from the movement is the blue screws and gold color balance. I would assume they buy the movements in bulk, but i can say casing material and band the company may do on their own or outsource their unique design, as a result these types of companies rare due tweaks to the movement. If the balance and screw were changed, it would increase the appeal of the watch so it doesnt appear to be shared. Overall, love this episode and really like RM inspired designs. Ok with homage, but as you said, something is missing when you wear a piece like this.

An example of an homage with a slight twist is what zerootime did with their case on the T4 which has a see through sides. At least they bring something to the table, but when you look at this movement (slightly different than the one in yours) is still a recycled movement shared with many other watches

I don't know what to think of it. This watch is not a replica, I guess I’d let it pass as an “homage” to Richard Mille. The thing to me with Richard Mille, and lots of the watches you present on your channel, is that it’s essentially art. If I were in the market for a Richard Mille I wouldn’t consider intrinsic costs of the materials, or comparable pieces (like is it is chronograph or tourbilllon etc.). When I buy a Richard Mille I’m essentially buying a modern piece of art with a very specific design language and I’m also buying it with the knowledge that enough people will appreciate it as much as I do so it also represents an investment. A watch like this is a bit like an art student painting a picture inspired by Van Gogh. Sure they will be able to make it look very much in his style, we all recognise Van Gogh’s style by his dramatic brush strokes, but nobody would appreciate the student’s piece as a Van Gogh; it would be inspired by Van Gogh like this watch is inspired by Richard Mille. Now we could of course have a reasonable discussion about if Richard Mille really is the Van Gogh of watches. I’d argue he is a bit over appreciated at this point, but that isn’t the topic of this video. The point is that comparing materials like the quality of the strap, or the quality of the carbon isn’t really important. The point is it isn’t a Richard Mille and that’s why it will get you that 998k discount. I’m sure it’s a fine watch that keeps good time and if someone that can’t afford a Richard Mille likes the design language I’d prefer them to wear this over a fake RM; so in that sense they serve some market. Not my thing, but to each their own. Loved the discussion by the way; really cool to see you try something else sometimes.

Something about the case shape on this one looks far less attractive to me. I think I've managed to pinpoint that I don't like that the sides of the case jut out rather than cut in. The original design where the sides are inset a bit from the bezel just looks way better. When they bulge out like this the whole watch looks bloated and too bulbous. Takes away from the sporty edge the watch is supposed to have. This is the same issue I have with the franck muller gravity. Otherwise, it's something I might have been interested in. Really like RMs myself, but they are far out of my price range.

How likely is it that the same Chinese factory producing this, is also producing RM branded replicas, and selling them for 1/2 the price of these Blackouts? That's exactly what's happening with most of these "homage" brands...

An example: you take a steel Rolex "submariner"...How many brands make models very, very similar to a Rolex "submariner"...Dozens of brands take the Rolex as a "template" and modulate it in their own way...Are they copies? Many watches look the same at first sight and it is only after having had them in your hands that you notice that there are different qualities of materials, finishes.... Blackout Concept wanted to "prove" that you can get very close to Richard Milles by spending 250 X less... Does this make Blackout a criminal? Even if Richard Mille took Blackout to court and won, this should call into question some high-end watch manufacturers because I don't think that 500.000 € for a tourbillon is justified, even with all the goodwill in the world...But as the saying goes "when you love you don't count"... Richard Mille sells everything he produces and that's great! I don't think he has to worry about the "competition" because they are two totally different customers. On my part...I gave myself a yellow tourbillon Blackout Concept and the effect on the arm is just brilliant. I am enjoying myself and this is the most important thing. Best regards to all and live happily ever after!

You very eloquently expressed the mental turmoil over these watches. "I like it. Well, I don't. But I do. But it's lame. I'm not lame! But it's cool. Well, not that cool. But kinda. Enough? naahhhhh. well maybe yes?". The problem is RM has monopolized this mechanical design and shape, and anyone doing anything similar is immediately a knockoff. I do love said design though, but I don't see how I could wear it unless it had a giant red sticker that said "not a richard mille I just like the mechanical design but can't blow 1Mil!". Maybe that's an angle I'd be on board with. Some seiko modders like to poke fun at the brands and models they're "hommaging" (the Brolex dials come to mind), I feel like this could work for Blackout Concepts. Because again, RM's design is fantastic, and can obviously be solid inspiration. Add in a bit of clever self deprecation and you're immediately in cool territory. I dunno call it the Richard 99, as in for the 99%. I suck at puns. You get the idea.

It greatly shows that RMs arent such a piece of art watches with crazy movements anymore at least the price on them is not justified. Maybe with better complication and material someome RMs are worth around 50-100k judging other watch brands but nowadays you pay 10x more than the watch is worth anyway and the manufacturing cost of those wstches are probably 20-30x less then retail value. Dont bs me that it took ages to develop movement thats why we pay more

Had they altered the aesthetics to present an original design, not representative of a RM, I believe this company could enter a new field of high end watches for collectors with limited income. My thoughts as a former owner of 4-RMs over the years and a wearer of Tsar Bomba, another leading “homage” offering: it’s like a neck tattoo, as long as you’re already sleeved it’s acceptable. However, if you don’t have any ink and jump straight into a neck tattoo, you’re a poser trying to look tough. The Tsar Bomba TB8212CF series are available in carbon fiber & ceramic in colors, they’re 5ATM water resistant, housing a 24-jewel automatic movement and lumped- just like Richard Mille. They basically look good enough to get you mugged. Having sold off my RM’s and only having Patek & Rolex steel sports in my current collection, I figure f@ck it and I own three ☝🏻😂

Why wouldn't you recommend it? Seems to me when you get right down to it, a watch is going to be a rip-off of another watch no matter what anyone thinks. They're limited by what they are. There have been RM-like watches for decades now. So I guess you could say it's a knock-off as well.

Maybe it's because I am not a fan of RM in the first place but I think this watch looks horrible. The case finishing is not impressive for the 3000$ price tag. Longevity and shock resistance of a tourbillon in that price range is probably also quite underwhelming. +/-25 sec/day? Really? Sure, RM is overpriced but at least you get quality. If you really want the RM look, forget the tourbillon and check out the ZEROO T4 THE ARCHER FULL SKELETON TOURBILLON. It's probably also trash but at least the case is decently finished.

Open this watch beside a Rm watch Then make a real review again with the right information. You compare a block of plastic and a piece of art complication with about 400 single piece assembled by hand. Don’t get me wrong. The watch you show us look really great, but you can’t compare with Richard Mille at all. You have to compare apple with apple. You should do a review with this watch and Tsar Bomba. (700$ watch) look as good at the one you have. Way better comparaison 👍

the wealth gap between those who can afford richard mille watches and the rest of the world, is what is truly immoral. if we were to distribute that wealth evenly, everyone would be able to afford good quality and original watches, as well as proper housing, food and healthcare. unfortunately, brands like the one you mention here in this video (and in furniture, companies like ikea) are just capitalizing on people's lack of knowledge and their desperation to own what they can never afford, by offering an inferior product disguised as a 'good deal'.

The ticktocking channel features a homage watch. Frankly, I think that is not a good move though it represents an unconventional twist to the channel, many will appreciate. Steve, you mentioned your mixed emotions about this video right upfront. And it's not that homage products are no fun. Indeed they can be a lot of fun. It's more the plain lack of providing emotional engagement by a copy, which tells it all. Not defending these sick price levels of RM, which is used to justify this video. But eventually these sick prices are the result of a brilliant marketing strategy blended with very crasy market conditions. Commercial success of a brand is mostly earned, and justified by the market. Steve Hallock as a brand took how many years to build? Your brand represents everything but liaising with knock offs. This video is fun, but should remain a one time experiment for the sake of protecting your brand.

My only guiding principal is that I pursue whatever I am interested in. I personally found this interesting, so I bought it, and I have learned a lot. I don't believe in self-censorship or not following an interest because it's against collectors-code or whatever nonsense. I have no stake in any brand; I'm not beholden to anyone. If ultimately someone can make something for $2k that is as good as what someone else is charging $2m for (not saying that's the case here, IT ISN'T, and I love RM), it's on them to defend themselves.
