Krik of Black Owl Outdoors takes a look at the Second Front backpack by tactical company, Hazard 4. Following the success of the Switchback, the Second Front was released to fulfill a demand for a 2 strapped bag. Almost identical to the Switchback, the Second Front just added a shoulder strap and left everything else as it was on the Switchback.

did anything fall out of its compartments like the pens, or the note books from them being placed sideways. Lets say if you drop the bag on its opposite side, do these things fall out?

So, took the pack on a camping trip over the weekend. I think overall, it functioned pretty well. I realize that this pack was not primarily designed for hiking so I can't really knock it for not being as comfortable as other packs that I own. I am still not sold on the shoulder straps. I wound up carrying it much lower on my back than I like to, but it was the only way to alleviate the strain on my shoulders and neck. I was able to fit a substantial amount of gear into it though, without it being overly stuffed. (ENO hammock, change of clothes, GSI Soloist, Sawyer water bottle etc.) The fit and finish on this pack is excellent...but I agree with you, there are a few things I would certainly change.

How do you pack your clothing/undergarments? Most videos are usually with "pouches or small packs" on the inside of the bag. Also, where would you place papers, maps or small books for purpose of travel?

Which is better. . . Hazard 4 Second Front, 5.11 Rush 24 or 5.11 All Hazards Prime? Looking for quality built materials throughout the bag. Going to be used as a camping, hiking, outdoors bag. I don't mind paying the price when I'm getting the top quality product. Any other bags that you suggest over these ones? Anyones opinion welcome

Thanks for the insight. I guess you're right about the amount of gear needed for an overnighter, especially since the MOLLE system on this can expand its carrying capacity significantly. Could you also comment on the comfort level of this bag for hiking medium distances (10-15mi) as compared to traditional hiking bags like lowe alpine, osprey etc.

Krik, I love your videos. I could watch your product reviews and how-to's all day everyday. One thing though- Lighting. I'm sure its always a beautiful sunny day when filming but we more often than not catch mainly shadows during your vids. You guys need more light. People might miss everything you have to offer because they can hardly see your face sometimes. This video is obviously the darkest so that's why I'm saying something. Love your work guys! Please keep making awesome videos!!

For my body frame, this back was comfortable to wear for miles at a time. Because of its 1000D Cordura construction, it doesn't have quite the same "flexible" comfort feel of an osprey or other backpacking/hiking bags. Some technical bags need a break-in period as well. To sum it up, I think this bag would perform very well for longer hiking outings (comfort wise). If you do purchase this bag, be sure to check the return policy in case it's not what you expected. -Krik

Good design, Definitely on my list of possible packs. Just wish they would design one that had a rigid hydration compartment for the water bladder. I have a problem with them getting compressed and leaking... causing me to either fore go the internal hydration option or packing in a way that is too limited. But I do like that design.

I'm confused... Company name - "Black Owl Outdoors" Penguin on the logo Sign off tag line, "Later Turtles" The really dark footage is strange as well. Other than that, I would like to say, "Thank you." That was a well done, and highly informative, review. I'll likely be purchasing one of these packs now.

Hey Stony, sorry for the late reply. I didn't realise you intended on filming in such contrast. You're right, everything that needs to be seen is clearly seen, it's just that I found it a little distracting. It looks like a nice little pocket clearing in the woods with cover/shade. I'm just not used to seeing a video in such darkness that's all. Like I said - great videos guys!

Great review. I had a couple questions though. 1. Is this pack big enough/capable of being used as a hiking/overnight camping pack? 2. I was gonna buy a backpack for day hikes and the occasional overnighter. I was planning on getting a regular old 35L internal frame hiking bag but I just love the look, durability and organization of tactical packs like this. Would you say that this bag could fill that role or would it be a serious compromise?

if you're debating between the rush 72 and the hazard 4 packs, i would definitely go with the rush 72 for one reason, and one reason alone. the bag is bigger thus it will be much more versatile for you. you can always compress the rush 72 down do a smaller sized bag, but you can only put so much into smaller bags, which the both of the hazard 4's would fall into when compared to the rush 72. hope this helps! - stony

They are both high quality. The Hazard 4 is larger and has a much nicer suspension system (hip belt, shoulder straps, load lifting straps, etc.) One of my only complaints of the H4 is the orientation of the admin pocket. I want it upright. But either way, both packs will serve you well. -Krik

If I had to choose between this bag and the J-Tech for traveling purposes, I would chose the Hazard 4. The Second Front has a more defined shape to it. Which may make it more convenient for traveling if it needs to be stowed in tight places. And I really like the clam shell design for packing. Does this help? -Krik

Thanks for the review. i am considering this pack against the rush 72 as i carry a lot of equipment/ use it to carry shopping but also want to be able to use it as carry on luggage but 20 LTR is tiny for just under 200 gold coins

The Rush 72 is a much larger pack. The 72 may be a little too big for a carry on, depending how much you put in it. The Second Front on the other hand, would work great for a carry on. But is much smaller in terms of volume. -Krik

When I get these sorts of questions, I always respond in the same way. ANY pack is capable of carried out for a night. Right? Because honestly, you don't need ANYTHING to sleep out one night and survive, in most scenarios. So, it comes down to what your comfort level is. What would you take with you for an overnighter? That would help my gauge if that amount of gear would fit in this pack. -Krik

BlackOwlOutdoors Krik - I personally don't think the review was ruined...but the shadows definitely weren't optimal. The review (as are all of the others y'all do) was superb - and I really thank ya for it! Several parts of the review, for me anywho, were just hard to watch due to the extremes in shadows and light. And there were several parts near the end of the review when it was almost hard to make the pack out at all while you had it on. Just a few thoughts - but maybe next time if you're going to be doing a review outdoors just before dusk...it might be good to either wait until a bright part of the day, or bring a few lights. Again, just my opinions :) But thanks again!
