I was looking out for my Grandma and Grandad in the footage - they had a shop in Blackpool in these years. They’d take my brother and me on the sands for the day which was magical to us. Then we grew up and discovered the delights of the Mediterranean and so dear old Blackpool receded into our past like childhood sweethearts . . .

I was born in Blackpool and remember this era well. The lad at 0.53 with his handcart could have been me, just what I was doing then from Blackpool south station. Asking people on a Saturday to carry their suitcases in a handcart my dad made me. The magic amount was to make £1 that day. Taxi drivers used to try and chase us away but we just stared them down. Sometimes the trip to the digs was almost to the town center and then you were only given sixpence. Others might give a shilling for a much shorter trip which was great. A great childhood and great times and friends. I think we had the best times compared to today. Kids do not seem to get much of childhood now.

Thanks for putting this on. I'd only be a toddler when it was filmed, so it is nice to see my elder generation on their holidays. Holidays used to be set by the industries these guys worked for, and going to Blackpool in the summer was a world apart from some of the grimy industrial towns these families came from. It was crowded in these weeks because Lancashire industries all had the same summer holiday dates. So . . . (and this was nice for them) . . . they all had a community spirit, borne from working together, and holidaying together. Happy days.

I live in Australia emigrated in 1978, but did not leave Blackpool till I was in my late 20's so I have fond memories of my childhood and growing up there in my teens it was just like this film happy days. Went back in 2011 to show my daughter as she was only a baby when we left, I did like the new prom walkway but it was so sad to see the Pleasure Beach half its size, and the prom seemed like it was missing something no atmosphere, and all the B&B looking so run down the one we stayed in was, I hope it can be saved the illuminations need to get more high tec half of them were not working when we returned and the Tower was hardly lit, a lot of the old shops need demolishing down from the old central station it needs someone with a bright idea and a lot of money to bring Blackpool back to its glory days.Maybe its got better since we visited hope to come back again in the future as part of me will always be there. Good Luck....

Grow up. I like a mixed culture. The only reason why Blackpool has lost its magic for me is that, thanks to the increase of technology, a lot of things like the ghost train, that used to scare and delight me in equal measures, have been replaced by more sci-fi related rides. I miss the Chamber Of Horrors too. I'll never forget the working model of a lady trapped in the jungle having her leg bitten off by a crocodile...and then you could see her leg joining back on in the not-quite darkness.

Little did we know back then, that just across the channel those beautiful foreign types were strolling along stunning beaches, eating beautiful food, and not getting lashed with horizontal rain. Our parents and grandparents were happy to sit on a shitty beach for a week, in suit and waistcoat (maybe trousers rolled up and tie removed). No budgie-smugglers for grandads. Them, after a week of Watneys Red Barrel and Bingo, it was back to Manchester for some more rain. I love these old cine films but they just remind me how far I've come from those days. Anyone nostalgic for these days just needs to keep voting Tory and wait a few years.

Some of the clips here are clearly not Blackpool. On another note, films about Blackpool usually ignore Stanley Park. I can understand folk not caring for the tackiness of the Golden Mile however Stanley Park remains a lovely part of the town.

several of these promonade scenes look more like they are in Morecambe! You can tell by the lack of tramway on the seafront and the promonade being very curved!

Beeching proposed Blackpool Central station remain open & North to close but a deal was done between the British Railways Board & the Councils. Lancashire County Council wanted to use the land for the new Police Station & Blackpool Borough Council also wanted the land for car & coach parking. Bpl Central Stn closed on 1st November 1964, Bpl North main line platforms closed in 1974 & the current Bpl Nth Stn uses the former excursion platforms. Central had 14 platforms & North had 16 platforms, total 30. Today just 6 platforms remain at Bpl Nth & excursion trains have virtually disappeared.
