I love the dial shifter. The column shifter is always in the way. I will not buy a for or chevy for this very reason.

Dial has grown on me over time for sure but I do miss the old school column shifter I will say.

I hated the dial shifter....right up until I got one. It's not bad at all.

Sold my Cummins and bought a 2022 Laramie 2500 6.4. I love this truck and so glad to finally get away from the dpf, def mess on modern diesels. Yes, the 6.4 sucks gas, but now I don’t have to worry about water in my diesel, or my fuel jelling up, having the truck start a regen cycle, needling me to drive it hard just as the roads are covered with snow and ice and I can’t get over 35 mph lol.

Thanks for the feed back! Sadly I’ve heard of more and more people in the 3/4 ton class doing exactly what you did and switching over from diesel to gas due to everything you stated above. It’s so sad the modern emission crap on all the new diesels now days. I feel so bad for all the guys who make a living and rely on a diesel motor for there business. The drama and maintenance they have to go through must be insane.

Great video. I have a '17 2500 CC, 6.4 with 3.73 gears. I put on over 20k my first year, went down from DE to FL and averaged 21mpg with just some totes and suitcases in the bed. Majority of my driving is country side/highway and best I can usually get is 18-19mpg average in the warmer months. No MDS side effects but I can't complain about it, I like seeing the increase in MPGs and having the muffler deleted I think helps with the down sides.

Glad you liked it! These trucks really are great. 21mpg is sweet! But make sense your seeing that on flat-ish roads to FL. I did average 18 myself just the other day on a short 80mi run with MDS off. Which was sweet. These trucks can do it you just gotta find those sweet spots.

Nice review, great looking truck. I have a 21 2500 Big Horn 6.4. I’m getting about the same gas mileage, but I don’t know about the engine sounds you mentioned (I have 28,000 kms so far). The ride quality is great, and I’m impressed how quiet the cab is. I actually don’t mind the gear selector at all, and like you show it frees up the space for that great console space! Again, thanks for sharing!

Thanks glad you enjoyed it and much appreciated. I love this truck. By far one of my favorites so far. Cab is really quite that’s for sure & the ride is great! Yea the dial shifter always gets mixed reviews. Some like some don’t but I’m sure in the very near future more trucks will be moving this route anyways.

The 6.4 growls when you step on it. I love it too. I pull a 7K trailer 800ish tongue weight. I'm just like you on the tow ratings...FOR ME. MPG is definitely of interest. It is a thirsty beast. But, having had both a 3.21 rear end and a 4.10, it isn't a whole lot different overall especially on the highway and towing but it doesn't like the city driving for sure but fortunately I use it mostly for transfer station duty and towing the travel trailer. But my numbers on MPG roughly the same as yours. I live in the Montana so my most recent trip was right at 8 mpg towing and that was an improvement over the OEM tires (Firestone AT's). I got 7.7 on the AT's with only 15K on them before I changed. I never rotated them. I was a bit surprised since I got BFG KO2's. One, they are nicer and softer normal driving and run them 5PSI higher for towing at 70 rear and 65 front. For the First Time, I don't even ever have to worry about payload at 3,000 lbs. And I have a 15K max tow. I run about 70 mph when towing but in the mountains, I will cut it when it downshifts and RPM's go to 4500 as it goes uphill and try to maintain 3500 rpm. I do this generally because of the aggressiveness of cruise control and mpg. It will generally drop down to 63 to 65 on most any interstate grades. I'm good with that. I increased my standard speed from around 67 after getting Good Year Endurance trailer tires they are that much better with the stiffer sidewalls than China Bombs. They help plant the trailer and you don't see the back corners anymore...if you know what I mean. On good road I go to around 72. The Road Armor suspension helps on the dirt and hitting pot holes kinds of challenges. And no more stuff falling on the floor. It is really noticable... I still have LOTS of power left at all times. It loves driving between 2500 and 3500 rpm towing and generally is at around 2500 to 2700 rpm on most flat highway runs hitting 9 to 10 mpg sometimes with wind being the biggest factor. I have hit 13 mpg on a couple of tanks with a big tailwind and losing around 1500 feet altitude over a few hundred miles. Overall, towing, I am right at 7.9/8 mpg like on my last trip from Helena MT to Custer South Dakota and back. With the OEM At's I was at 7.6 mpg but I also was still under 10K miles. IT takes 10K miles to fully break it in I noticed. Here at 16K miles you can tell it has found itself in how it sounds and drives. It is non-aspirated but living in the mountains, I do not notice altitude being an issue in any way. The 6.4 is a beast. I hate parking it though. Upon occasion I have taken it to 80 mph like getting past some stupid driver unconsciously speeding up as you pass on cruise giving ME a dirty look. Step on it and it goes like a bat out of hell pulling my 7K trailer leaving them behind. I think people wonder about how much power it has until I step on it... Always plenty in reserve. Yes, I know what the diesel people say, I don't care. I don't spend 400 on an oil change or constantly have to worry about DEF... AND, It's nice not having that hesitation you get when towing even in a 1500 with a 5.7 Hemi. It growls and goes.. Great truck. My dislikes are that they didn't re do the cab like they did with the 1500. It is noticably smaller in a crew cab vs the 1500. My second dislike is, how high it is. I addressed that with the power running boards and installed the back drop down step to get in it, but hey it's a beast of a truck, what do you expect. It's my fourth pick up with the first three being 5.7's Hemis. And yes, I had to hemi tick issues including two fixes on the 2015. I gotta honestly say my favorite for just driving was the 2013 quad cab/short bed with the old six speed tranny and the 3.55 gears. There was something a bit more animalistic in how it did what it did gettin up to speed like on a pass on a two lane whereas the 8 speed is more civilized in how it goes about it.

Enjoyed your vid. I’m in the process of deciding which 3/4 gas truck to buy. I’m biased as I currently have a Ram Rebel. Having test driven a Laramie 3/4 gas, the only thing I don’t like is the MSRP. I really like what they did with the mirrors for 2023!
@MadGreekOff-Road
@MadGreekOff-Road Жыл бұрын
Thanks much appreciated! Honestly the two 3/4 ton trucks I would be between is the Ram 2500 obviously lol or the Ford F-250 with the 7.3. I still think Ram makes the nicest looking trucks but can’t deny that workhorse of a 7.3 motor. MSRP is insane all around by Ram certainly takes the cake from what I’ve seen. Yes the new mirrors for 23’ are a win in my opinion! They finally fixed that issue. Only took them like 20 years hahah

Good "regular person" observations. I had a 13 quad cab 1500 with 3.92 and a 5.7 hemi and the old transmission, a 2021 1500 5.7 with the 3.21 gears and now a 2022 2500 Hemi with the 3.73 gearing. I love it. I pull a 6700/7000 lb travel trailer one slide and it is perfect vs the 1500 3.21 5.7. You didn't mention payload which for mine is 3000 lbs. I'm thinking yours is in the 2800/2900 range. I love that whereas the 1500 had a 1300 lb payload. For the first time in my life I don't have to worry about payload... AND, you pretty much lose 1000 of those payload lbs with a Diesel. I find around 6K and maybe 500 lbs to be the sweet spot for a trailer with a 1500 and 5.7. 3.92 is best, but a 3.21 is actually OK for gearing. The NEW transmission compensates for the lack of gearing but I assume with associated wear. The 2500 is "perfect" for up to a 1,000 lb tongue weight (Mine is about 800 lb's) maybe 1300 fifth wheel set up and 9K max tow/up to 10K TT towing.. but works adequately above that if set up right. Like you, for my needs, it is perfect. It is not my daily driver as I have a Renegade for that and I put 8500 miles on it in 11 months with 60% of that towing. So, I'm NOT wearing it out... You also don't have the under seat storage in the back if you have an Alpine or HK sound system. The passenger side will end up having a speaker under it. We keep our back flat as we have dogs. It works great for that with a 2 inch memory foam, blankets etc. I actually am pretty satisfied with the mileage. Towing is roughly equivalent to the 1500 mpg at between 8.5 to 9.5 depending upon the road and I do hit that 16 to 17 mpg on the highway not towing. I'd say 12 mpg city/highway/50 50 for me locally... I'm NOT a leadfoot but occasionally do like to feel that Hemi work and hear that rumble.

Thanks glad you liked it and appreciate your added content. I did cover payload and towing capacity for this truck right in the beginning just after going over everything it was equipped with but my payload for this truck is 3,200. Anyways it’s a great truck and glad you enjoy yours as well! 👍🏼

If you are hearing a slight chirping/ squeak coming from the exhaust I believe there is a valve inside the muffler. I had a 2108 2500 with a 6.4 and the dealer changed muffler out under warranty for me and the noise went away.
@MadGreekOff-Road
@MadGreekOff-Road Жыл бұрын
It’s not coming from the muffler. I changed out the muffler and am running a MBRP catback exhaust system. Without being able to exactly pinpoint it the sound is coming from either the Y pipe or one of the cats up front closer to the motor. Like I said goes away after a minute or 2 once exhaust warms up but I have legit heard this noise on every newer 6.4 including my buddys new Jeep 392.

Great review. I wish though I got in the 12’s MPG lol. On my 2020 6.4 2500 LB I’ve averaged 10.4 over the last 6 months. It’s a great truck although after owning many Fords one thing that drives me nuts of all things is the Key Fob on my Ram. For whatever reason I have to smash the buttons to get my truck to respond??
@MadGreekOff-Road

Thanks much appreciated. Don’t get me wrong even my mpg fluctuates. I really gotta baby it and find those sweet spots on the gas pedal to really see those nice numbers lol. Yes your right on the key fob. You really do have to press the buttons hard to get them to respond which is annoying at times.

Do you get a squeaking sound coming from the motor when you have a cold start? A lot of them hemi 6.4’s tend to do that.

Yes I do and typically the noise is more vocal on colder days during a cold start but after a little bit as things warm up it goes away completely.

I own the 2500 with the 6.4. If you’re really getting 6 mpg in city, you have something significantly wrong with your truck. Thats absurd and I never came close to that ..

On average once the motor broke in. I’m seeing about an average of 14-15mpg between city and highway mix. Best I have ever gotten it on pure highway driving was 20mpg and the worst I have got on pure city was 6mpg but that was due to it doing a lot of sitting while running due to abnormal traffic and such but on average it does a lot better than 6mpg for city driving.

you must have a heavy foot... I have a 2016 2500 Tradesman 4x4 with 4.10 gears & I routinely get 11-13 mpg around town & 17-19 on the highway. I doubt those aftermarket wheels help your mileage either.
@MadGreekOff-Road
@MadGreekOff-Road 10 ай бұрын
As the engine broke in more I’m now seeing just over 11 mpg towing and 18-19 mpg highway if I keep it right around 65.

That’s not true on the MDS as I have been in tow haul mode and the MDS came on when I was towing my car trailer without my rock crawler on it. If I have my rock crawler on the trailer it will never come on. Also the tailpipe is cleaner when you run with the MDS off vs MDS on. My PW only gets 10 to 10.5 mpg with 4.10’s with MDS off. My ford 6.2l only got 11.5mpg and my ram 6.2l only gets 10.5 mpg so the 6.4 Milage is normal to me. Most think it’s low but it likes drinking in stop and go and if you play in higher RPMs.
@MadGreekOff-Road
@MadGreekOff-Road 9 ай бұрын
That’s interesting. What year is your PW? For me as long as I’m in tow haul mode the MDS won’t kick on at all. Doesn’t matter if I have an empty trailer or I’m fully loaded. That’s really strange yours kicks on during light loads as I wouldn’t want mine kicking in at all during towing no matter what the load is.
@Long-nd8bq
@Long-nd8bq 6 ай бұрын
You can also put it in manual gear mode and just select 8th gear and that should disable MDS. On my old Ram (6 speed) I would either hit Tow/Haul or put it in 6th gear instead of D and it would stay off.
@MadGreekOff-Road
@MadGreekOff-Road 6 ай бұрын
That’s typically what I’ll do for daily driving is just manually select 8th gear and that keeps the MDS from kicking in. Tow Haul mode works as well but I typically save that for when I’m hauling something 👍🏼
