Soldier, author, and poet Luke Ryan is a stalwart American with a unique perspective on what it means to be American. From his humble upbringing in the mountains of Pakistan to his time as a US Army Ranger, Ryan’s life has been encompassed by sacrifice, service, and storytelling.
From the beginnings of organized warfare to America’s 20-year involvement in the Global War on Terrorism, there has been a rare breed of warrior poets who have answered the call not just to fight, but to be a voice for those who may not otherwise be able to articulate their experiences. Black Rifle Coffee is proud to present the story of one of those people.

Thanks for having me on! It's an honor to share my story here, for anyone watching please do me a favor and read about Pat Hawkins, Cody Patterson, Jenny Moreno, and Joe Peters. Whatever you can find, it means a lot to me when people just read a bit about them and keep their memory alive for a bit longer. Thanks everyone, RLTW 🤘

My medic, Doc G, was asked why some survive while others die, this was after word of our first loss on April 11th, 2004...he said simply because someone has to tell their story...Mr Ryan, brother, you survived to tell their story and you are doing an amazing job with this task!

I’m currently struggling getting help from the VA for my schizophrenia and nerve damage. I used to write poetry all the time when I was a kid and you’ve inspired me to start back up. I also just recently used my GI Bill for welding and I graduate September 6th. I’m so scared brother. I’m so fucked up and spend most nights crying in pain and in fear of my future. Wow! I’m non military, but I support our military and Veterans. I’m a supporter and fan of BRCC, as well as many other Veteran owned companies. That being said, this was a gripping story to say the least. Some of these stories just get you right where it hurts and I can’t even pretend to know how this Ranger must feel, or felt. His mind is filled, seemingly, with horrific memories even going back to his childhood. So happy he found an outlet and told their story! God Bless those who wear or have worn a uniform!

If only that were still the case. These endless senseless wars that only happen because the rich and powerful want more wealth and power. We should have never been there in the first place. 911 was an inside job by our own government. Our government is the true boogeyman of the world. I have the upmost respect for the men and women that serve and fight for America. But I despise deeply the politicians and super rich men that decide when and where they want to go to fight so the war machine can be fed.

It's possible! Since I escorted Patrick's body back the next day (and wasn't wounded all that bad), I slipped through the medical cracks and checked myself into the hospital at Benning after the escort duties were done. My head was pretty cloudy and my memory of that time sucks, so it's kind of a blur. But totally possible, since I did do that. Either way - thank you for what you do and how you've helped guys as they come home. Our return wouldn't be the same without guys like you putting in the actual work to get us healthy again. Cheers!

I feel it is very convenient for many people who sent men and women to war in Afghanistan or Iraq to forget or wilfully ignore what happened there and the consequences which linger on to this day. It suits them because it was ultimately an uncomfortable failure. Hearing such testimony is certainly not helpful to those who sent them there - so the stories are not heard as often as they should be to avoid the mistakes being repeated. I think the documentaries you make about these conflicts are not only remarkably interesting and well crafted, but they are incredibly powerful, honouring the memory of these young men and women who fought there in a complex and at times confusing mission - many sadly never to return. They were cut down in their prime and the politicians should never be allowed to abandon their sacrifice simply because it raises incovenient questions about the path they took. You rightly allow their story to be documented and you rightly honour their service and sacrifice.
