I fricken love gel stain. I bought a 1980 house with the old cherry colored door frames, moulding, and window sills. I decided to keep the wood trim (with updated moulding, doors, etc.) I found a good color match, and after cleaning and a little prep, I go over the door frames with gel stain using a rag. It really pops out a warmth to the wood and dries with a little sheen. Really nice. I feather brush on the sills. OMG! It looks really nice. I luv gel stain. So glad I didn't paint it all white. I appreciate wood tones so much more.

Very nice. Great way, to give old furniture a more modern look. I often see second hand furniture like that, for next to nothing on resale sites. Well made, mostly real wood...but nobody wants it, because it looks too old fashioned. Sadly, I don't have a home to furnish, or I would be all over it! But I love, that there are people, who save these pieces from the dumpster and give them a second life!

This seems like a good painting option for redoing kitchen cabinets since the gel stain makes it so durable. Do you think that would work?

(ps: for the dry time, i have always added this amazing paint additive called "Japan Drier" to my oil paints and/or oil based inks and it always cuts the dry time by at least half and that's me being generous! you can find it in any art store including Michaels usually in the same section as all the oil paints as it is an oil based paint medium meant to speed up drying times. i have never tried it on gel stain specifically but i am going to for my project that i am about to do which is why i am watching this video so i will update my comment as soon as i try it out!) Hey great video! this video was a perfect find for me as i couldn't decide what color to paint my door and there is a bunch of graffiti on it so staining (well i thought) was going to be out of the question as i was unable to completely get off the ink, even after sanding ~ 7 layers plus of paint/wood! the ink they used had seeped incredibly deep past all the paint and into the wood of my door lmao! but anyways your vid came as a godsend as i just happened to have a bunch of the grey killa/ bin laying around and an unused can of red mahogany varathane laying around so i am about to try your easy to follow method and keep you all updated on how it turns out!!

I repainted 1974 kitchen cabinets in a rental (thankfully grooved flat face) with oil paint in 1998 in a biscuit white. That finish lasted 20+ years. The last tenant (for 11 years) didn’t take the best care so I repainted them after her. Same color and oil paint. They turned out so nice. Yes cleanup required turpentine and a little extra time and odor BUT the reward of durability and being able to clean the finish, let alone getting 20 years of service is well worth it. The paint went on like a dream. It’s not going to happen with acrylic paints. I used alkyd in my own house which is another awesome cabinet finish. 😊 I just refinished a gorgeous kneehole desk in Minwax oil based gel stain in Espresso (black brown). It went on and leveled like a dream. So smooth. I just sanded the old finish.

Hey, Shannon! Question for you -- I watched your video from a year ago when you used Rust-Oleum decorative glaze instead of the gel stain. Do you have a preference? Is the gel stain better than the glaze? I'm about to start a project and eager to get it right the first time! Thanks!!

this is my favorite finish, look, and even one of my favorite colors schemes. Thanks for sharing the exact colors you used. Whst did you end up doing with the inside of the drawer? Here in Seattle, WA it's a very long dry time. Better to leave it longer when in doubt. Routinely primer is 48 hours, paint a full day (not 2-4 hours). I have a problem that may make an interesting video. I have a beam on my white ceiling .I would love to get it too look like brown wood. At least woodish. Doesn't have to be wood knots etc. Woodish would be good enough. Maybe even this whole deal would be fine. Or would it? And what colors would one go with for a brown woodish look? Yhanks for sharing.
@blacksheephouse Жыл бұрын
You could certainly do this finish or any others on my channel to create a wood look on your beam, just tape off the areas needed to protect. XO MaCenna here on youtube recently stripped her wood beam and it looked like it was a real beast of a project 😅
