Welcome back my Furniture Friends! In this video, join me as I work some magic on a $40 Habitat for Humanity ReStore find - a solid wood, Canadian built coffee table, made in 1995. I'll be stripping off the old orange finish, sanding out some scratches, and giving it a contemporary twist with a new stained finish.

I love it. It looks so much better. What a great makeover. I love the way the color turned out. I will have to find a similar color to that driftwood to use as a paint wash. I use Dixie Belle paints. I do the same when I sand. I start with 80 grit (when needed), then 120 and finish with 180. Before I do the 180 I always wipe the piece down with a wet rag to “pop” the grain. I find this really helps when applying my stain and top coat.

Amazing transformation. I think a lot of people own/were handed down at least a few pieces afflicted with the "orange wood" syndrome that are structurally sound, but look horribly dated. You see it with kitchen cabinets too and it really dates the entire kitchen. The combo paintwash and stainwash techniques were the perfect update and made the table look brand new. Well done!

I usually water pop and lightly sand the wood before staining. However, I loved your tip about two thin coats of poly before lightly scuff sanding and will soon be trying that! As usual, a good video and great work on this piece.

One thing you can do is rub water onto the Bearwood and then let it dry and that will cause the grain to rise up and then do a light sand over that you can knock that down. That way you don’t have to rely on your clearcoat covered up.
@salvagedbykscott
@salvagedbykscott 2 ай бұрын
Rubbing the paint wash onto the bare wood will still raise some grain even if it’s already been popped, so I don’t think it’s necessary to make that extra step. If it works for you, AMAZING, but this trick is what works best for me.

You're one of the only furniture restorer/flippers I've come across on youtube that I've liked. I feel like you really respect the furniture in ways others don't. I'm quite sure that it's pine wood, as this was very modern in the 80s/90s and it turns kinda orange over time. My dinner table is pine wood and from the 90s, so this gave me a good idea how to get rid of the orange color and give it a neutral tone again (although it will be so much work to do the chairs as well...). Thank you!

Lovely colour change! Its a beautiful piece. I have a long low bookcase my father had made in the 1940s, and it's definitely orange. I think it is maple. I've been trying to think of some modern colour that would work better but still be a MCM link.

When you said you were going to change the orange color, I thought you’d paint over it. But now, not Katie! Wow, I love the color. My husband and I are thinking of painting our kitchen cabinets, but I don’t want such a drastic change. Yep, they’re orange. I’m going to show this to my hubby. Question: would we have to go through that color wash?
