Learn how to avoid streaks and brush strokes in your black painted furniture flips using these techniques. Painting furniture black with no fear! In this video I share all my tips for a flawless finish anyone can achieve with easy to access products from the hardware store.
Prep Products used:
Dollar store scrub brush and dish soap
Black sandable wood filler amzn.to/3uuQ9XZ
300-1500 grit sanding sponges- amzn.to/3RdKCik
Any 2.5 inch angled brush - here’s a solid choice- amzn.to/3Asbaq3
Rollers:
Whizz cabinets and doors FOAM roller - I buy mine at lowes (4 or 6 inch, I use either one) if you have larger piece go with 6 inch
PAINT (not sponsored)
Any oil enriched enamel will work similarly. They are often called “Alkyd” instead of “oil enriched”depending the brand,
Paint I used in video -
What I used today - Valspar furniture and cabinet oil enriched tintable enamel in color - Caviar by Sherwin Williams (you have to purchase this paint at lowes)
Other brands similar products - I would use for black projects or cabinets, tables, doors and other high traffic places
- BEHR Urethane Alkyd Satin Enamel
-Benjamin Moore Advance
-Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane
Top coat - any water based polyurethane- I used Behr matte finish one from Home Depot. - Varathane is really great of you can find any local
Handles - Amazon

This is a new type of paint some might not be familiar with. It is not really oil paint, it is “oil enriched” often called “Alkyd” and is soap and water clean up due to the unique way it is made. I’m really loving using this paint for darks and blacks and then still using my one step paint recipe paint for lighter colors bc it saves me so much money on my business (see video here for 1 step paint recipe- kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZ6okqKwi7eghpI

Do you still do the roller brush top coat only technique or is the Behr+paint mix your top coat? Also how many top coats layers do you apply?

I paint a lot of black. I use a Behr flat black and mix in a smidge of almost an eggplant color. I call it ‘antique black’. Behr is great at self leveling and smoothing itself out. You can mix a glossy or satin poly into the last coat if you don’t want a flat finish. The purple tint doesn’t show but somehow helps hide the defects. My late grandpa taught me that. I love the black on black, great piece!

Do you have to buy the higher grade Behr paint? What prep method do you do? Prime? I will try the eggplant touch next time I paint in black :)

I’ve watched a TON of furniture painting videos over the past month. This one was the most helpful to avoid streaks. I can’t believe the difference in techniques. I’ve tried another one before yours and my nightstand was LOADED with bubbles. Yours did the same process, but with a different amount of paint and roller pressure. Yours worked perfectly for me. Thank you so much!

Tack cloth: Traditional tack cloth is typically a varnish and a solvent (turpentine) kneaded into a 100% cotton lint free rag like a cheese cloth. Lots of people say you can use beeswax, or mineral spirits. Beeswax might cause adhesion issues with the next coat of paint, poly, varnish, etc. Mineral spirits tends to leave an oily residue behind. The simplest tack cloth you can make yourself on the cheap is either a microfiber cloth slightly dampened with water and rung out, or a slightly dampened with water and rung out old t-shirt before wiping the surface. The great thing about those is they can be reused indefinitely. Personally, I agree with you that $3 per tack cloth is getting expensive. However I am to lazy to take the time to source cheese cloth, and knead a mixture of varnish and turpentine, only to have to store it in glass mason jars with the lid on to prevent spontaneous combustion. In my basement wood shop, I keep all my old white under shirts, and white crew socks in a drawer. Socks are used to apply stain, wipe on poly, and other oils based finishes. T-shirts are dampened with water and used as tack cloths. Brown paper bags are used to buff out the last coat of finish after it has had a coupe days to dry/cure. The sunday newspaper is how mask off areas I don't want paint or finish to get onto (the coupons and the comics are nice too). I burn the socks and newspaper in the fire pit behind my house, because I don't want to go through all the hassle of rinsing them out with water, and hanging them up to dry to prevent spontaneous combustion. My fire pit has a fine mesh screen to keep the little fire goblins contained. I like to burn before or after a rain storm so the surrounding ground/grass/area is wet. If mother nature doesn't want to help me out, then I get my garden hose out and water my vegetable garden while I'm at it (kill two birds with one stone). My neighbor remodels houses, so I have a steady supply of paint samples from his clients to paint projects with. I also like to buy most of my paint, stain, poly, varnish, etc. in the "oops" isle because it is cheap. When I do have to actually buy finish, I tend to buy at least a gallon, because it is nearly impossible to get quarts anymore (the struggle is real, I feel your pain). Anyway, keep up the good work! I always love watching your videos. You got me hooked on Whizz foam rollers now. I painted a couple doors for my other neighbor and they turned out great. It looks like I sprayed them.

Thank you for all the information! I do the same thing with old t-shirts and socks, one heck of a hack I love is when I have spindles or legs that need a clear coat I put on a latex glove, stick your hand in a sock, then dip your fingers in the polyurethane then wrap your hand around the leg/spindle and work your way up and down applying your top top coat in seconds! no drips to worry about :) it’s excellent!!
