Is there a downside to putting color chips on the clappers? It seems so useful I can't see why all slates don't do it. Cost?

They have to be reliable & calibrated charts. I'm hopeful we will see something like this in the future. Only time will tell!

The one thing I dislike about dry erase slates is the marker residue. This is why I use white premade numbers on white gaffers tape. It’s fast, higher contrast, and we aren’t searching for the dried out Expo marker.

I thought this was a really cool idea. It's just missing timecode in. Like if they had a 3.5mm jack and you could attach a Deity TC-1 on the back.

That would be cool but I think when that gets added you move away from the 7 year battery life and the simplicity of the slate. I believe it used to sell for almost double the price but at around $125 US I could see it being used on smaller productions that don't have/need a smart slate.

If it has NFC functionality then yes. I’d search to see if it does. Most likely but check first.

never quite understood why so much real estate was wasted on "director" and "DOP" for every take, it is not like that will change between every take. I recently worked with a producer/editor that requested that a colour chart be added to the slating process. He later showed me how he used that information in post. Just that simple addition saved some time in colour correction. What is your take on that?

I agree! I may or may not have had discusions like this with companies in the past. Only time will tell!
