Cermaic wool is kind of sketch. Consider castable refractory for your forge!
The Brand i use is called "Econocast 30" and is a hard 3000 F castable
"Mizzou Castable Refractory" is also a community goto but I have no experience with it. To my understanding they are very similar.

Can you add a link to the products you recommend or the names of the products. Some manufacturers have many products and gets confusing if you don't have the exact name or spec. another great tip keep em coming

Econocast30 and Mizzou Castable are both excellent choices. They are a hard castable and can even be used for burner tips

Good stuff and thanks for this video as it touches on safety of kaowool. Many new comers might not understand the danger of not coating this ceramic fiber. I coat mine with gun cast castable. Holds up real well.

Does castable refractory need to be thicker than Kaowool? For example, could a Kaowool forge be relined with castable rather than replacing the ceramic blanket when the time comes? Or does the castable need to be thicker to keep the heat inside the forge?

I just did that with my forge. It seems to work fine, takes maybe a little longer to reach full temperature. Given the added safety to my lungs, a bit of extra propane is a small price to pay.

@@sambakich7494 That's great to hear. Did you need to use something like ITC-100 on the castable, or did it trap the heat well enough on its own?

@@jeffbrown7741 it seems like it's trapping the heat on its own. I'll try the itc stuff, though. It might make it a little more efficient.

It will heat slower but it can be same thickness. I always pour mine 2"

Hey Trenton, this is a really applicable video for me. You mention starting with an NC Tool forge. I have an NC Tool Whisper Deluxe with rear door that was loaned/given to me. I have noticed that it does seem to have loose ceramic fiber. My question is can I put castable refractory over the fiber to seal it and lock it in? Not a big fan of breathing bad stuff.

Ehhh, not well. Now, you can INSULATE the castable with an outer layer of fiber but thats about it
