Thanks for your kind comment. I try my best with these videos but it isn't very easy for me to film myself when working so I appreciate the support. The smooth finish on most of my workpieces is directly related to how my gas forge is running (neutral) and the fact that I am notorious for working at lower temp. than most (probably not a good thing).

It crossed my mind but I don't think it's necessary. And I don't want to weld in my current work space since I'm already pushing things by blacksmithing in the city on the top floor of my building. Thanks.

When you clamp make sure the leg is closer to the centre of the vice and it won’t kick out and get away from you

You make a good point. But given the proportions of my vise, if I want to clamp closer to the middle the workpiece has to be angled too steeply and not enough of the handle end will protrude. I'm still working on improving that step... Thanks.

I like this method. Takes less expensive (shorter) tool steel than hand held. No fumbling for tongs either. Then why haven't I???

I think both handled and hand held tools of this type have their advantages and disadvantages. It really depends on the work being done. I do like this method too, for now... Thanks.

I dont weld in my work space - I'm already pushing it with my top floor blacksmithing. And I really don't feel these need welding. Having that seam helps reduce vibration that would transfer to my hand a little. At least that's my theory... Thanks.

I just simply spray with WD-40 at the end. I do that for most of my tools. Good to keep tools oiled in this humid climate. Thanks.

Have you ever tried to put the open leg towards the center of the vise? I think it probably gonna clamp it harder preventing it to open. Your vise doesn't seem to have that much of... "play" ("backlash", maybe?), though. However, really smooth job. Neat and tidy. I really like it!!! Keep up the good work ;). (sorry if I made some mistake, English is not my first language)

Glen, quality work, as always. Not accounting for which of your handle types is superior, which one is the fastest to make and which one uses the least amount of round bar? Do you have the hole drilled by the same people who machine the punches for you? Thanks again! Jerry

The round bar for the handles is the same length in all styles. I would say my method previous to this (wrapping around the punches) is fastest and this method is slowest. Yes, the machinist also drills the holes for me - just very convenient... Thanks.

The small, block style anvils I use are my own designs which I had made here in Taiwan. I was having a hard time finding a good anvil here that suited my work style and so took advantage of the resources available and got these made. Thanks for watching and subscribing.

It comes in an annealed state. Soft enough to drill a hole.

How does “air” hardening compare to “quenching in oil?

Certain types of steel harden when you let them cool down in air (air hardening, like the H13 steel being used in the video) and other types want to be quenched in oil, and others in water. It all depends on what the steel contains. Make sure to learn the details of the specific steel that you are using.

Glen not too get to personal why is it u sit in your videos?me I am I. A wheel chair mostly from a back injury years ago... and I still love too blacksmith although if you smell bbq it’s probably my foot on fire !😳 but I have a full shop just everything’s a bit lower to ground and on table top so I can get my wheel chair under so I can get in close to work and see my old ass eyes are getting the best of me I just wondered if you too suffered from something to put u on your butt!

The reason I sit is mainly because when I moved to Taiwan and found my work space limited, I thought sitting would be logical. Rather than me moving from work station to work station (no room for that), I put my tools around me (as much as possible). I liken it to how a drummer places his instruments. But sitting has also helped my body in some ways; helped with some chronic problems I was having. However, sitting while forging is inherently more dangerous than standing and proper precaution must be taken. And sitting in one position can lead to other physical problems so you need to vary things up when possible. Thanks for watching.
