It seems to have some nice organic appeal, perhaps in a gate or rail application. Nice idea, thank you. I think hitting the thorn edges with a file before twisting might make them pop.

Experimentation is important, especially for those folks who are just starting to work steel. No matter what the piece looks like in the end, the result is always a lesson learned. You just cannot go wrong with practice, curiosity, & experimentation.

If you ever try making a rose that would be a perfect stem with thorns. Maybe a bit thinner, but awesome idea! My brother and I love the tongs you made him too btw!!

ZMan3k I was going to say the same thing. This is something to try.

I'm very glad to know you (and your brother) like the tongs. The idea for turning this into a rose stem is spot on. But as you say, it needs to be made from thinner, round stock. Thanks. Glen

Would make for some awesome security bars on top of fences. People wouldn't be able to grab onto the bars and climb over.
@gstongs7 жыл бұрын
That's absolutely true. Anyone who grabbed onto the top of that twist (before I hammered the points flat) would regret it. Would definitely work for security but I guess if anyone got hurt (even a thief) a lawsuit would follow accusing the security bar owner of using cruel, medieval techniques to keep people out! Thanks for watching. Glen

@gstongs6 жыл бұрын
Timothy, Yes, I will eventually try using thinner stock and see how it turns out since you and some others have mentioned how this would make a good rose stem. Thanks.

Someone else had the same thought....a rose stem. Maybe out of a thinner stock.
@gstongs7 жыл бұрын
For sure, this could make a decent rose stem. But you're right, it would need to be out of thinner, round stock. I may just give that a try. Thanks.
@he-mansuncle76617 жыл бұрын
Very impressive Glen! That'd definitely be perfect for round stock and making the thorns of a rose stem! The square stock is really interesting and does look like scales! You could make a really interesting "holiday reef" with a long piece that you twist and then make into a circle. The reef might be cool if you added a small round stock and twisted it around the large circle. If you have any magnets you could make an one handed bottle opener that doesn't have the cap flying off. Just need to get the angle on the curve and the caps come off perfectly! With your awesome twists on a bent and rounded opener it'd be amazing! There's other KZbin videos on one handed bottle openers but nothing that you could make with the twists and the finish of your products! The brass brush would be great on the scales!! Great video as always Glen!!!!
@gstongs7 жыл бұрын
Phillip, Your idea for employing this technique to make rose stems is right on. With thin, round stock, the effect should be pleasing. I like your idea for a bottle opener with a magnet to catch the caps. Ironically, my next video will be (yet another) bottle opener using this differently twisted piece here. I'll need to experiment a bit with the magnet idea and see what I can come up with. Thanks.
@he-mansuncle76617 жыл бұрын
Glen GS Tongs Awesome! For the magnet, could you use one of your small punches? Since it won't take a large magnet to catch the caps. Or possibly drill half way but, I think the punch would be able to make the needed size for the magnet. Even if you needed to upset the end where the opener would be, I think with the curve you would be able to not see the protrusion from the punch. It'd be interesting to see round stock twisted this way. You could possibly make the Rose from one single piece. Would take a larger piece of round stock and adding length. But maybe if you started with a larger square or round stock added the length and upset the rose portion or the metal. Do the same as you did in this great video and then make the opposite cuts below your metal for the rose, you could then make that the green leaves below the actual rose. I have no idea if it would work or not lol... that's why your channel is so awesome! Your skills are amazing and truly know what the metal will do and how far you can go with it! Can't wait for the next video!
@he-mansuncle76617 жыл бұрын
Glen GS Tongs I also think the scales or thorns would look really cool with the copper or brass brush you use! Would really add depth to the corners!
