I think you should make the handle a little longer. There's no point in a scythe if you have to bend down to use it
@robaddison41446 ай бұрын
If he put a little crank in the elbow where the blade meets the tang, he could adjust the 'lay' of the blade, like on commercial scythe, so the cutting edge is parallel to the ground while the tang - and snathe - is pointing upwards to him Terrific build though, I'm not knocking his work 👌🏼 Just a suggestion to make it a little more ergonomic, excellent work though 👏🏼 And your tattoo is cool AF 😎

Great job! Inspired by the old Norwegian scythe video? Sadly it seems very few know of the Scandinavian/UK/American scythe type which does not use a peened blade, but as you showed, a hardened, ground blade. This is the type I use to maintain several acres (old American scythe) and much prefer it to the more famous "continental" type. One thing that helped me a lot was learning to grind the blade very thin, like a straight razor, or at least

I believe your snath (handle) isn't long enough (and unless bent crazily should probably have additional handles sticking off it? Less sure about that, I think simpler longer straight handled versions existed but don't know what the trick to their use/ holding them was), as well as your scythe tang not having enough of a bend to make the blade parallel to the ground when you're standing up and holding the tool. Also, you're supposed to scythe by twisting your body (mostly hips and legs?) not really using the arms.
@garethbaus54715 жыл бұрын
I was noticing those things as well.
@loganstewart58185 жыл бұрын
EGBrandan you’re right, if only the handle were a foot longer, and the blade bent slightly more, also curved upwards so it would cut more. Nevertheless it was a great video/ learning experience 😄 we all learn for the next time 🤘🏼

The only problem I see is the handle not being long enough. And while not necessary, the 2 short extra handles really makes it easier and more ergonomic to use. The blade is fine imo. If its meant to be used just for a short time and only for some small chores then its probably not a problem though. Hyvää työtä kuitenkin, keep 'em coming.

You sharpen a scythe using a peening anvil and a coarse and then fine pocket grind stone you dont harden it as it would cause the cutting edge to fracture, when using it you should be standing up straight and just twisting at the hips with very little effort. Its a nice display piece but you wouldnt want to scythe an acre with it
@bobbertbobby39754 жыл бұрын
that was my thoughts exactly. the handle is all wrong also..wouldnt allow a very good swipe by a turning of your hips..using your core..thats why the handles are almost always bent. so all you have to do is stand and use your core to basicly twist your hips to cut.
@k.30044 жыл бұрын

Very interesting... I've not seen one made like that before. I'm sure there are reasons tho. Ususally the blades a MUCH thinner as they are ment to mow fields. Also the ones I have are a bush blade thsts about 2 feet long, and a grass blade.. It's about 4 feet long. Scythe blades are NEVER ment to be picked up off the ground. The width of the blade, and the angle it's attached to the snath (handle) determines the cut hight. Also the curvature of the blade should be determined by the hight of the person, and their reach. Most cuts are determined by hip rotation, and snath length. You always want something cutting, no dead spots. Neat project tho, and we'll made. Not something many would actually try to put to work tho.

MUCH EASIER work off some belly fat> When you hold it up, It put a strain on your back, shoulder. neck, and arms. TWIST and SHOUT > idk how to make it any more fun to do! and work off belly fat.
